An asymmetric two-post arrangement is the setup we recommend most often to shop owners who are storing a mix of sedans, trucks, and the occasional SUV over the winter and need to get in and out of the driver’s door without wrestling around an arm. The offset column design swings the front arms shorter and the rear arms longer, which puts the vehicle’s center of gravity in a spot that makes entry and exit noticeably easier when you’re loading three or four vehicles a day into storage during a busy fall changeover.

For seasonal storage specifically, we like this configuration because it speeds up the process of getting vehicles up and out of the way. A tech can pull a car in, get it centered, and have it in the air in a couple of minutes without fighting arm placement on every different body style. We’ve quoted these for shops running anywhere from a 9,000 lb capacity up through 12,000 lb, and for most passenger vehicle and light truck storage that range covers it. The tradeoff is that asymmetric lifts are a little pickier about vehicle placement — you can’t just eyeball it — so if your crew is inexperienced, plan on a short walkthrough during install so everyone’s centering vehicles the same way every time.

Setup Two: Symmetric Two Post for Mixed Fleet and Heavy Trucks

The second configuration we see a lot of interest in, especially from shops near Sioux City that also handle fleet trucks or heavier pickups, is the symmetric two-post lift. Arms are even front to back, which keeps the vehicle’s weight balanced directly between the columns. Capacity Planning for What You’re Actually Storing

Don’t just buy for today’s fleet. If your seasonal storage mix might shift toward heavier trucks, SUVs with aftermarket bumpers, or fleet vehicles down the road, it’s worth going a capacity tier higher on your automotive two post lifts purchase now rather than replacing equipment in three years.
