Myth #1: The Freight Company Will Unload It For You
This is the single most expensive assumption in the business. Standard LTL freight on a two-post is curbside dock-to-dock. The driver’s job ends when the trailer doors open. On a 10,000 lb capacity unit you are looking at two columns in the 600 to 900 lb range each, plus a carriage crate, arm bundles, a power unit box, and hardware. A liftgate is rated for weight, but it is also rated for footprint, and a 12-foot column crate hanging off the back of a gate is not something most drivers will attempt even if the paperwork says liftgate service was purchased.
We have watched shops in the Iowa-Illinois corridor try to solve this with four guys and a floor jack. It works right up until it doesn’t, and then somebody has a crushed foot and a bent column. The realistic options are a forklift rated for the load, a skid steer with forks, a telehandler, or a terminal pickup where the freight yard forklifts the crate into your trailer. Measure your approach before you order. Check overhead clearance for the trailer, not just the crate. Check whether the truck can leave without backing a quarter mile down a residential street. If any of that is questionable, terminal pickup is usually cheaper and always less dramatic than a failed delivery attempt, because a reconsignment or redelivery fee gets added on top of the original freight and nothing about that is fun to explain to your accountant. Also think about where the crates land once they are off the truck. A column crate set in the middle of your only usable bay means you cannot work while you wait to install. Plan a staging spot on level ground, ideally inside and out of the weather, because the power unit and the electrical components in these shipments do not love sitting in an Iowa February.
Myth #4: Delivery Day Is the Install Day
Shops that book jobs for the afternoon of delivery day are the ones who end up calling us frustrated. Even when everything goes right, unloading, uncrating, inspecting, and staging eats hours. Then you need anchors set, columns plumbed and shimmed, the overhead or baseplate tied in, cables routed and tensioned, hydraulics filled and bled, and an electrician on site for the power drop. On a clean install with good concrete and a forklift on hand, our crews plan most of a day. On a retrofit into an old building with an unknown slab, it can stretch.
The other reason not to stack delivery and install is inspection. You want daylight between the two so that if a cable is kinked or a column has a dented rail, there is time to get a replacement part moving before your bay is torn up. We stock a lot of common two-post components and can often have a cable, a cylinder, or an arm assembly out the door quickly, but nobody wants to discover a problem with a car already on the arms. Myth #5: Concrete Is a Detail You Sort Out Later

One customer in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” and asked whether that was enough. It might be, and it might not be, and the honest answer depends on thickness, compressive strength, cure age, reinforcement, and how close the anchors sit to a control joint or a slab edge. Most two-post manufacturers specify a minimum thickness and psi in the installation manual, and those numbers exist because anchors pulling out of thin concrete is exactly how columns tip.
Core drilling a test hole is cheap and takes twenty minutes. If the slab comes up short, the fix is a reinforced pad poured to spec in the footprint of each column, which needs cure time measured in weeks, not days. That is a scheduling problem, not a dealbreaker, but only if you find out before the freight ships. We would much rather have this conversation while you are still deciding between models than after a semi is on the way. Freight quotes on lift equipment vary widely, and the cheapest number on the page usually means more handoffs. A shipment that moves through three cross-docks between the factory and your bay has three chances for a crate to get dropped, a piece to get separated, or the whole load to sit in a yard over a weekend. Direct or minimal-transfer lanes cost more and arrive in better shape. For heavy commercial equipment we generally recommend paying for the shorter path.
There is also the question of who is on the hook when something goes wrong.
