A municipal shop isn’t a typical independent garage. Bays are often shared between squad cars, plow trucks, mowers, and the occasional Hummer or heavy pickup, and the lift schedule has to work around snow season, mowing season, and everything in between. We’ve had fleet managers tell us they need to move a heavier capacity lift into the bay where a lighter one currently sits, because the vehicles getting serviced have changed — bigger trucks, bigger SUVs, bigger loads on the frame. That kind of swap means two lifts moving at once, which changes the freight plan entirely.

Forklift Logistics on the Shop Floor

Once freight is off the truck, the next challenge is moving heavy components inside the building. Most fleet garages already run a forklift for tires, parts, and salt bins, which helps — but it needs to be sized correctly and available on install day, not out plowing a lot or hauling mulch. We coordinate with facility staff ahead of time to confirm forklift availability, because our crew plans the install sequence around it: columns first, then carriages, then arms and hydraulic hookup.

In shops without a forklift on-site, we bring our own equipment or arrange rental gear, but that has to be scoped in the estimate, not discovered on install day. We’ve seen jobs slow down because a facility assumed our crew would supply a forklift, and we assumed the opposite. Now we ask directly, every time, and it’s saved a lot of headaches for fleet managers trying to keep other bays operational during the swap.

Removing Old Lifts Before New Ones Go In

Fleet bays rarely get a lift installed into open floor space — there’s almost always an old lift coming out first. We regularly quote both sides of that job: removing an aging lift with a forklift and disposing of it, then installing a new higher-capacity unit in its place. Sometimes a facility wants to keep the old lift and relocate it to another bay instead of scrapping it, which means our crew is handling two lift moves in the same visit — one coming down, one going up, and possibly a third going into storage or a different stall.

This is common in fleet operations where equipment gets reassigned as the vehicle mix changes. Concrete Readiness Before the Trucks Arrive

Getting this right before delivery day keeps the whole timeline on schedule instead of stalling out with a truck full of lift components sitting in the yard.

Scheduling Around Seasonal Fleet Demands

Southwest Iowa fleet operations run on a seasonal clock — plow trucks need to be ready before the first snow, mowers before spring, and squad cars need consistent uptime year-round.
