That’s the part most people skip. They pick a lift online, get excited about the specs, and then panic when a freight truck shows up at a farm shop with no dock and no forklift. Step One: What’s Your Budget Range, Really

Every decision tree starts with money, and with automotive two post lifts the range is wide. A standard-height 9,000 to 10,000 lb lift for a passenger car and light truck bay sits at one price tier, while an extended-height 12,000 lb lift built for full-size trucks and SUVs with three-stage arms sits noticeably higher. We’ve quoted everything from a straightforward 10K standard-height unit for a shop doing several lifts a day to a pair of extended-height 12,000 lb lifts at 14 feet tall for a dealership group wanting matched color and telescoping footpads. Racing crews doing tire and wheel work day in and day out tend to land in that 10K-12K range because they need the arm reach and load capacity without paying for heavy-duty commercial towers they’ll never max out.

Budget also has to include the extras people forget: oil for the hydraulic unit, truck adapters if you’re running duallies or lifted trucks, and freight. We tell every caller up front — don’t set your number based on the lift price alone. Set it based on lift plus install plus any site work like running airlines or electrical. That total is what actually determines which configuration makes sense.

Step Two: Do You Have a Forklift On Site?

This is the question we ask on almost every call, and it changes everything about the quote. A crate holding one column of a two-post lift can weigh well over a thousand pounds, and there are two to four columns depending on configuration. If you’ve got a forklift on site, unloading is quick and our install crew can get straight to layout and anchoring. If you don’t, we need to plan around it — either arranging a liftgate truck, coordinating with a local rigging service, or scheduling our crew to bring the right equipment.

We’ve had customers assume a farm shop with wide-open bay doors means easy unloading, but a wide door doesn’t help if there’s nothing to get a 1,000+ lb crate off a flatbed. On the flip side, shops that use several lifts a day and already run a forklift daily can usually skip a step in our process entirely. Tell us honestly whether you have a forklift before we quote freight — it saves a rescheduled truck and a wasted trip for everyone involved.

Step Three: Ceiling Height and Bay Width

Once budget and freight logistics are sorted, we move to the physical bay. Ceiling height determines whether you need standard or extended-height columns — we’ve measured everything from 11-foot ceilings in a converted three-car garage to 14-foot shop ceilings holding lifts tall enough for full-size trucks. Bay width matters too; a 16-foot-wide bay works fine for one two-post unit with clearance, but if you’re running two lifts side by side for a racing operation doing back-to-back tire changes, you need real math on column spacing, not a guess.

We also ask about concrete thickness and rebar before we ever finalize a quote. Four inches of concrete with rebar is typically fine for a standard lift, but heavier extended-height configurations or dually truck work may call for more. Step Four: Matching Arms and Pads to Actual Vehicles

For tire rotation and wheel work specifically, arm configuration is where crews get it wrong most often. A three-stage arm with telescoping thread-up footpads gives the reach needed for trucks and SUVs with different wheelbases, which matters if your race team is servicing tow rigs and trailers alongside the actual race cars. We’ve set up automotive two post lifts with GM truck adapters, dually adapter kits for one-ton farm trucks, and standard footpads for passenger cars — sometimes all on the same account depending on what rolls through that week.

Don’t assume every 10,000 lb lift comes with the same arm reach. Screw pad adjustment range and max load per arm vary by model, and if you’re lifting a loaded one-ton dually for farm shop work, that difference matters. Tell us the heaviest and widest vehicle you’ll actually put on the lift, not the average one, and we’ll match arm length and pad style to that worst case.

Step Five: Color, Brand, and What’s Actually In Stock

Color preference comes up more than people expect — we’ve had customers request red first, blue second, or want a matched color across multiple bays for a dealership group. It’s a small detail but it matters for shop identity, especially for a racing team that wants their equipment to look as sharp as their cars. On brand, we work with Rotary and Challenger for commercial-duty automotive two post lifts, and we always tell customers what’s actually sitting in our warehouse versus what needs to be ordered — because lead time from the manufacturer can run a week or more once you factor in freight to Iowa.

If timing matters — say you’ve got a race season starting and need the bay operational — ask about in-stock units first. Step Six: Install Timeline and Site Readiness

Once the lift and configuration are locked, the real logistics start. We ask about power in the garage, whether electrical work needs to be a separate job, whether there’s a pit or clear floor, and what the concrete looks like. Step Seven: Life After Install — Service and Parts

The decision tree doesn’t end at installation. Automotive two post lifts need maintenance — restraint gears and paws wear out, footpads need replacing, sheaves fail, and arms can start sagging or dragging if not serviced. We’ve repaired two-post lifts with all of these issues at shops doing heavy daily use, and a racing operation doing constant tire and wheel work puts real hours on a lift fast. Plan for annual inspections and keep your model and serial info handy. A lift that gets used several times a day for wheel work needs more frequent checks than a lift used a handful of times a month, and catching a worn arm or gear early is a lot cheaper than an emergency repair mid-season.
