The Myth: Cables Last as Long as the Lift

Walk into any older shop and ask when the lift cables were last replaced. Half the time the answer is never, and the lift is 15 years old. That is the biggest myth in the industry. Lift cables are wear items. They stretch, they fray, they corrode where the hydraulic fluid touches them, and they get memory-set at the drum. Manufacturer intervals for cable replacement on automotive two post lifts range from 3 to 5 years for cable-equalized lifts, or every full inspection cycle for chain-equalized lifts. The lift itself will outlast the cables by four or five cycles. When shop owners assume otherwise, they end up with a cable snap under load. A cable snap is not usually catastrophic — the safety locks catch — but it is the difference between a low three-figure cable replacement and a five-figure vehicle repair when the car drops six inches onto the arms and cracks the windshield. Cables are not forever. Replace them on schedule.

What a Real Cable Inspection Looks Like

A proper cable inspection on automotive two post lifts takes about 30 minutes if you know what you are looking at. Lift the car half-height. Pull the column covers. Wipe the cables clean with a rag. Then run your gloved hand along every inch of exposed cable, feeling for broken strands, kinks, or corrosion. Check the sheave (the pulley the cable rides over) for grooves or flat spots. Check the anchor points at both ends — where the cable terminates in the column and where it wraps the equalizer. Look at the cable where it exits the drum; that is the highest-wear point. If you see any broken strands, replace the cable set. If you see rust bloom, replace. If the sheave has a groove worn deeper than the cable diameter, replace the sheave too. European Cars Have Specific Lift Point Requirements

European specialty shops need to know that Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and the rest all publish specific lift-point diagrams for their vehicles — and those diagrams often require lift pad adapters. Porsche 911 chassis have four factory jack points that are actually reinforced pinch welds, and the lift pad has to be a specific rubber puck insert. Mercedes chassis often use puck-style receivers instead of pinch welds. BMW E-chassis have a specific factory jacking pad that requires an adapter to sit correctly. Automotive two post lifts do not come with these adapters standard; you buy them per marque. Our Dubuque customers usually order the Rotary or Challenger factory rubber puck kit and add marque-specific inserts. It is a low three-figure investment on the front end that saves thousands in damaged rocker panels down the road. Never lift a Porsche on a bare steel pad. When to Replace, Not Just Re-Tension

Some shops try to stretch cable life by re-tensioning instead of replacing. That works for six months, sometimes twelve. It does not work forever. Once a cable has taken a set at the drum or shown any corrosion, re-tensioning is a temporary fix, not a solution. The right answer is to swap the cable set when any of four conditions are met: five years since last replacement, visible broken strands anywhere on the cable, corrosion bloom in more than one spot, or measurable elongation of more than 1% of original length. Automotive two post lifts have two, three, or four cables depending on the model. Replace them as a matched set so all cables have the same age and stretch characteristic. Never replace one cable and leave the others; you will get uneven lift and premature failure of the new cable. Dubuque Humidity and Corrosion Reality
