A body shop foreman on the Iowa-Nebraska border called us this spring looking for automotive two post lifts to add capacity in a bay that had already been framed with 11-foot walls. He had been quoted lifts that would not physically fit. This buyer’s guide is the straightforward version we sent him — how ceiling height, overhead beam clearance, door swing, and column-to-column spacing decide which automotive two post lifts land in your shop, and which ones get returned to freight before you even open the crate.

Measure the Ceiling Before You Order
Ceiling height is the single most common reason automotive two post lifts get ordered wrong. Standard overhead-style lifts need 11 feet 8 inches to 12 feet clear from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction. That is not to the peak of the roof; it is to whatever hangs down lowest — a ceiling joist, a light fixture, an exposed HVAC duct, a fire sprinkler. Measure from the floor to that lowest point at both column positions, and take the smaller number. If it is under 11 feet 8, order a baseplate lift instead. Baseplate lifts route the equalizer cable through the columns and skip the overhead crossbar entirely, dropping the height requirement to whatever the column height plus lift stroke gives you. Our Iowa-Nebraska border customer had 11 feet on the nose, which killed the overhead option immediately. We spec’d him a Rotary SPOA10 baseplate. Fit clean, cleared the LED shop lights by 8 inches. Always measure before you sign the purchase order.
Overhead vs. Baseplate Configurations
Automotive two post lifts come in two configurations: overhead and baseplate. The overhead style has a crossbar between the two column tops with the equalizer cables running through it. It is stronger under torsion, the columns can be slightly shorter, and the hydraulic hose runs cleanly overhead. But it requires more ceiling. The baseplate style routes cables through channels in the columns and across the floor. It has a small hump on the floor between the columns — usually a 3-inch-thick plate — that most techs get used to in a week. Baseplate lifts fit in a 10-foot ceiling shop where overhead does not. Choose based on your building. Newer construction post-2000 with 12-foot ceilings gets overhead. Older buildings, garages converted to shops, and lean-tos get baseplate. There is no performance penalty either way; both configurations reach the same working height and lift the same capacities. Door Swing and the Column You Forget About
Nobody thinks about door swing on a new lift purchase, and it kills more installs than concrete does. Roll-up doors do not matter much unless the header is low. Swing doors — walk-through doors, side entry doors, personnel doors — swing into working space and can hit a lift column at open position. Measure the arc of every door within 12 feet of the intended lift position. If the door swings into a column, you have three choices: reverse the swing, move the door, or move the lift. Reversing swing is usually cheapest — most residential-style walk-throughs can flip in an hour with new hinges. Bay overhead doors need a header clearance of at least 3 inches above whatever your lift’s raised height is. If you plan to lift a full-size pickup to 60 inches, the door header needs to be at 63 minimum. Same for garage doors on their tracks. Automotive two post lifts do not move once installed; the doors around them have to accommodate.
Tire Rotation Bay Layout Basics
Body shops often run tire rotation as a courtesy service alongside collision work. If that is your model, lay the bay out with rotation in mind from day one. Column-to-column spacing on automotive two post lifts is typically 10 to 12 feet. Working aisle width — the space between adjacent lifts — should be 15 feet minimum, which lets you swing a full-size pickup between them without knocking mirrors. Tire storage racks belong on the back wall of the bay, not in the aisle. Air impact and torque wrench station belong within arm reach of each lift, not centralized. And a wheel dolly per bay saves an hour per shift when you are moving heavy tires around. The border body shop we outfitted this spring had two lifts across a 40-foot bay with a wheel dolly parked between them, and their tire rotation throughput doubled over the previous jack-stand setup within a month. Layout matters as much as lift choice.
Border Freight and Delivery Windows
Freight to the Iowa-Nebraska border is usually a two-stop LTL run — Rotary or Challenger ships from Madison, Wisconsin or Louisville, Kentucky, respectively, and the truck hits an Omaha or Council Bluffs terminal before local delivery. Add 3 to 5 business days to the manufacturer stated ship date. Weather delays freight more than any other factor; winter shipments can stretch a two-week window to four. Our recommendation for shops on that border: order in September if you want operational by January. Order in March if you want operational by May. Nobody plans for the freight lag, and every year we have three or four customers frustrated because their lift did not arrive on the promised date. It is not the truck’s fault, it is the network. Automotive two post lifts weigh 1,800 to 2,400 pounds and ship on a pallet with strap and shrink wrap. Have a forklift or pallet jack ready at receiving; the driver will not unload without one.
Body Shop Specific Considerations
Body shops have needs a normal service shop does not. First: paint and dust contamination. Lift cables and arm restraints do not like sanding dust or overspray. If your lift lives in the same bay as your paint booth or prep area, keep the lift covered when not in use and clean it weekly. Second: frame straightening work often requires lifting a partially disassembled vehicle. That means unusual weight distributions — front-heavy pickups with the engine out, rear-heavy sedans with the fuel tank pulled. Make sure the lift you buy handles asymmetric loads within its rated capacity. Rotary and Challenger both certify their automotive two post lifts for asymmetric loading up to a percentage of rated capacity, but the number varies by model. Third: measuring frame square with the vehicle on the lift requires the lift to be plumb within very tight tolerances. That is an installer skill, not a lift feature. Ask your installer whether they laser-square the columns. Ours do; not all do.
The Five-Item Buyer’s Checklist

Item two: concrete slab thickness in inches, and rebar spacing if known. Item three: swing radius of every door within 12 feet of the intended lift positions. Item four: 220V circuit availability — a two-post pulls a 30-amp double-pole breaker, and if your panel is full you need an electrician before the lift ships.
