Restoration and metal work put different demands on a shop than a quick-lube bay. You’re not just lifting a car to change oil, you’re getting a rusted-out frame up to chest height for hours at a time, sometimes with the body off, sometimes with a fender removed and weight distributed unevenly. That changes which automotive two post lifts actually make sense, and it changes where the posts need to sit relative to your welding table, sandblast area, and parts storage. You need clear swing radius for the arms, enough width to open both car doors without hitting a post, and enough depth behind the lift to still access a workbench or welding station. For a restoration bay specifically, we usually recommend erring toward a wider stance and extra bay depth if your building footprint allows it, because you’ll be maneuvering panels, engine hoists, and rolling toolboxes around a car that’s up in the air for days, not minutes. Get the width numbers finalized with us before the walls go up so you’re not fighting a post that’s four inches too close on one side.

Choosing Capacity for Metal Work and Heavier Projects

A lot of restoration shops undersize their lift because they’re thinking about the car that’s on the rack today, not the truck, tractor-adjacent project, or heavier frame they’ll pull in next year. Automotive two post lifts in the 9,000 to 14,000 lb range cover most passenger cars and light trucks with room to spare, but if metal work is your bread and butter, you’re often dealing with frames, stripped bodies, or vehicles loaded with extra fabrication weight that shifts the balance point.

Drive-On vs. Standard Two-Post for Rust and Frame Work

Restoration guys ask us often whether a drive-on four-post setup would serve them better than a standard two-post, especially when the project involves heavy rust or frame sections that make lift-point contact risky. For most metal and body work, though, a two-post still wins because it gives you full underside access without arms blocking rocker panels or frame rails, which matters when you’re cutting out rusted sections or welding in new metal.

The tradeoff is that lift-point placement on a rusted or modified frame takes more care, and you need adjustable arms with a wide range of pad heights and extensions.
