A farm shop owner north of Waterloo called us in the middle of pole-barn construction to ask about automotive two post lifts. His timing was actually perfect — most owners call after the concrete’s poured, and by then a lot of good decisions are already locked out. He wanted a lift for seasonal vehicle storage plus general maintenance on the family fleet: a couple of pickups, a service ute, and a restored Camaro that lives in the barn nine months of the year. We built him a pre-purchase checklist that covers slab, ceiling, doors, electrical, and buying-order — the same one we use with every buildout customer who calls us before the concrete truck shows up.

Step One — Slab Thickness and PSI Before You Pour

The single most important decision for automotive two post lifts happens weeks before the lift arrives: the concrete slab. Manufacturers require a minimum of four inches of thirty-five hundred PSI concrete under the anchor footprint. Most pole-barn builders default to a four-inch slab at three thousand PSI unless you specifically ask for the higher mix. Bumping the mix costs almost nothing on a small pour and doubles your safety margin on anchor pullout.

For our Waterloo customer we specified six inches of forty-five hundred PSI concrete under the lift footprint — a ten-foot by twelve-foot pad within the larger slab — with the rest of the shop poured at four inches. That upgrade added roughly a few hundred dollars to the total concrete bill and let us install any lift up to fifteen thousand pounds without a future slab repair. If you’re pouring a new shop and think you might ever want a lift, over-pour the intended lift zone. It’s the cheapest insurance in the entire buildout. Our concrete guide has the exact specs.

Step Two — Ceiling Height for Long-Term Vehicle Storage

Seasonal storage on automotive two post lifts is a specific ceiling-height problem. A stored vehicle hangs at full lift for months at a time, and above it you want enough headroom to store parts on shelves, hang a light fixture, and maybe run a second vehicle underneath. That means measuring from the finished floor to the lowest ceiling obstruction — usually the bottom of the roof truss chord — and doing the math on both vehicles at once.

A full-size crew-cab pickup at full lift needs about thirteen feet clear. Adding a passenger car underneath needs another three feet six inches of ground clearance. That’s a sixteen-foot-six clear ceiling minimum for two-vehicle stacked storage. Our Waterloo customer’s pole barn was framed at eighteen feet to the truss, giving him plenty of margin. If you’re framing new and lift storage is on the roadmap, sixteen feet is the target minimum and eighteen is the comfortable number. Anything shorter and you’re locked into a shorter-rise lift or a single-vehicle storage plan forever.

Step Three — Overhead Door Width vs Column Spacing

Automotive two post lifts have a fixed footprint. The columns typically sit somewhere between nine and twelve feet apart depending on model, and the overhead door has to be wider than that footprint plus a walking-clearance margin. A ten-foot-wide door and a wide-column lift on the standard footprint puts the columns too close to the door frame for comfortable vehicle entry.

We tell every new-shop buildout to specify a twelve-foot overhead door minimum. Fourteen is better if you’re on a rural site and the extra concrete isn’t a big cost adder. The Waterloo shop had a fourteen-foot door on the lift side and a ten-foot on the equipment side, which gave the lift bay full clearance for a Super Duty crew cab to roll in on either the narrow or wide diagonal. Once the doors are framed and the slab is poured, you can’t easily widen either one. Get this decision right before the walls go up.

Step Four — Electrical Circuit for the Lift Motor

The electrical requirement for most automotive two post lifts is a dedicated 208-volt or 240-volt single-phase circuit at twenty amps. That’s the same as a residential electric-dryer outlet, but it needs to land within twenty feet of the lift’s primary column. If the panel is on the far side of a large shop, conduit and wire cost real money in the buildout budget.

For our Waterloo shop we specified a subpanel in the lift bay wall, fed from the main panel across the barn, with a dedicated thirty-amp two-pole breaker for the lift and additional twenty-amp circuits for compressors and tool outlets. That subpanel added maybe a thousand dollars to the electrician’s bid and eliminated a fifty-foot conduit run to the far panel. Small decisions like that keep the shop tidy and reduce voltage drop on long tool cord runs. Every serious home shop should have a subpanel; every farm shop needs one.

Step Five — Choosing Between Two-Post and Four-Post for Storage

For pure seasonal storage, a four-post lift is actually a better match than a two-post. Four-posts don’t require anchor engagement into rated slab, they drive on and off without arm padding, and they can be moved with casters. Two-posts win on service work: you have unrestricted access to wheels, brakes, and undercarriage that a four-post drive-on runway blocks.

Our Waterloo customer wanted both, and the honest answer is that most home shops end up buying both eventually. We built him a phased plan: automotive two post lifts as the first purchase for the year-round work, then a four-post added to the second bay in a following year for pure storage. Total investment across both phases was actually lower than trying to solve everything with one hybrid product. Buying the right tool for each job is almost always cheaper than compromising with a jack-of-all-trades. If storage is the primary need, a four-post first is fine; if service is primary, the two-post comes first.

Step Six — Timing the Lift Purchase Against Framing and Roof

Buying automotive two post lifts before the shop is enclosed lets you receive the freight into a covered space and stage the columns inside while finish work happens around them. Buying after the shop is closed up means the columns come in through the overhead door on a pallet jack, which usually works fine but occasionally has to wait for a warm day if the driveway ices over.

We told our Waterloo customer to order the lift once the roof was on and the doors were installed — call it the halfway point of construction. That gave the manufacturer six weeks of build time to line up with his general contractor’s finish schedule. The lift arrived the week the concrete crew was cleaning up, and we installed the following week once the pour had cured. Timing the two schedules together saves storage costs and coordinates the finish sub trades. Poor timing means the lift sits in a garage-corner blocking the drywall crew for a month.

Step Seven — Anchoring Order and Final Commissioning

The last step in the buildout checklist for automotive two post lifts is the actual install day. Our crew arrives with a rotary hammer, torque wrench, and level, and we anchor into the cured slab in the sequence the manufacturer specifies. That sequence matters — anchoring in the wrong order can pre-load the column bases and skew plumb readings. We measure, mark, drill, set, torque, and check every anchor before we hang the arms.

Commissioning finishes with a load test to full rise using a shop vehicle at approximately half the lift’s rated capacity. We verify the safety-lock engagement at three heights, confirm the equalizer cable tension, and run the hydraulic circuit through a full up-down cycle three times. The final deliverable is a one-page commissioning report that lives with the shop’s insurance file.
