An independent pro shop in Urbandale asked us for a side-by-side of automotive two post lifts from Rotary and Challenger before adding a transmission bay. He’d worked on both brands as an employee at other shops earlier in his career and had opinions on each. What he wanted was current-state information — brand history, ownership status, parts pipeline reliability, and specific configurations for transmission service. This is the side-by-side we produced, based on what we install and support day-to-day in the Des Moines metro. No hedging. Real answers on both brands, and a recommendation at the end.

Rotary — the historical anchor
Rotary has been building automotive two post lifts since 1925 out of Madison, Indiana. It’s the oldest lift brand in North America and it shows in the engineering discipline. Their SPO line — the 10K and 12K units most commonly spec’d for independent pro shops — has evolved incrementally over decades rather than by revolutionary redesign. That’s a feature, not a bug. It means parts commonality across model years, install crews who’ve seen every variation, and a service network that knows what a 15-year-old SPO10 needs when a bushing goes soft. Rotary was owned by Vehicle Service Group (VSG), part of Dover Corporation, for years and remains under corporate ownership with continued US manufacturing at Madison. Warranty on the SPO line: 5 years structural, 2 years hydraulic, 1 year components. In practice, we see 20-year lifespans on Rotary lifts across Iowa shops with only cable and pad replacements as maintenance over that span. What Rotary charges for is that consistency — their sticker is 10-15 percent above lower-tier brands, and the money goes to the reliability that shows up 15 years in. For a pro shop doing daily production work, we’d argue that’s the correct trade every time. Reliability is invisible until it’s not.
Challenger — the pragmatic newcomer
Challenger Lifts entered the commercial market in 1980, founded in Louisville, Kentucky, and has built a reputation for pragmatic engineering at a competitive price point. Their CL series — CL10 and CL12 — competes head-to-head with the Rotary SPO line and lands within 5-10 percent on sticker. Challenger’s distinctive feature is a lifetime structural warranty across most of their commercial automotive two post lifts, which is real and enforceable — we’ve seen it honored on units past year 15. Their business is now owned by Snap-on Industrial through the Bahco Group, giving them corporate depth and continued US production. The design philosophy differs subtly from Rotary: Challenger tends toward simpler mechanical solutions, fewer moving parts in the safety system, and a slightly wider design tolerance in the arm geometry. The trade-off is that a Challenger lift feels a touch less “premium” in the hands — controls have slightly more play, arms rotate with a bit more friction out of the crate. In actual service, that difference is imperceptible after month two of daily use. What matters is uptime and support, and Challenger delivers both consistently. For pro shops on a tighter equipment budget, Challenger is our default recommendation over the sub-$2,000 imports that populate the online market.
Parts pipeline — how we source Rotary
Our parts pipeline for Rotary is the fastest in central Iowa, and that’s the biggest single reason we lean Rotary when other things are equal. We stock the high-frequency consumables — cables, hoses, seal kits, pad sets — at our Ames facility. If your Rotary SPO10 or SPO12 needs a cable replacement on a Tuesday morning, we can have the part in your bay by Tuesday afternoon. For component-level parts like a hydraulic cylinder or a motor assembly, we order direct from Rotary’s Madison plant with typical shipping of 2-3 business days ground. Structural parts (rare) run 5-7 business days. Our advantage over an out-of-state dealer is proximity: we know the Rotary parts catalog by SKU, we’ve filed enough warranty claims that the process is muscle memory, and we can dispatch a service tech from Ames to Urbandale in about 45 minutes when a lift is down and a customer’s car is stuck at working height with a technician standing under it. For an independent pro shop that can’t afford a lift down for a week, that pipeline speed is worth more than the sticker delta at purchase. Ask about the pipeline before you ask about the price.
Parts pipeline — how we source Challenger
Challenger parts move through a similar but slightly slower pipeline. We don’t stock Challenger consumables the same way we stock Rotary — the volume in our territory doesn’t justify holding shelf inventory — so we order from Challenger’s Louisville distribution when a claim or a service call comes in. Typical shipping: 3-5 business days ground. Component-level parts run the same timeline. Structural parts (rare) run 7-10 business days. On urgent claims we can pay for expedited shipping and shave 2 days off, and Challenger will usually honor that. For an Urbandale pro shop that runs a Challenger CL12, the practical difference is that a cable failure means a lift down for 3-4 days instead of same-day-service. If that’s acceptable in your workflow, Challenger is fine. If it isn’t — if a lift-down means canceled appointments and lost revenue that stacks up hour by hour — the Rotary pipeline advantage tips the scale. We don’t hide this from customers considering automotive two post lifts. We tell them the parts speed difference and let them decide with the facts. Some shops accept the slower pipeline for the lifetime structural warranty and the lower sticker. Some shops prioritize the pipeline speed and pay the Rotary premium. Both decisions are defensible.
Transmission-work configuration for each
For transmission service specifically on automotive two post lifts, the configuration recommendations for Rotary and Challenger are essentially identical. Symmetric arm geometry for full door swing during bench-and-drop work. 10K minimum capacity, 12K preferred for shops that also touch trucks. Overhead beam design if ceiling clears — the drive-through space is cleaner without a baseplate to trip over when the transmission comes down on a jack cart. Front arm extension to at least 50 inches to reach frame rails on longer vehicles. Rear arm extension to 55+ inches. Extended-height columns if your ceiling supports it — headroom under a lifted vehicle matters when you’re standing under a transmission for hours pulling bell housing bolts. Pad set with stackable adapters for different vehicle types. Both Rotary and Challenger meet these specs cleanly. Where they differ is in the trans jack ecosystem. Rotary has more third-party trans jack compatibility (Rotary, OTC, Norco, and generic all fit the arm profiles). Challenger has fewer aftermarket options but its own branded jack line with tight fit. That’s a minor consideration but worth flagging for a shop investing in the full transmission bay. Ask about trans jack fit before you buy the lift and you won’t be surprised at the accessory stage.
Urbandale shop preferences we’ve seen
Across the Urbandale-Clive-West Des Moines corridor, we’ve installed roughly 60-40 Rotary to Challenger over the past decade. The Rotary shops tend to be older establishments with legacy equipment (they’ve had Rotary for 20 years, they buy more Rotary out of familiarity). The Challenger shops tend to be newer operations built in the last 10 years, drawn by the lifetime structural warranty and the price point. There’s no wrong answer in that mix — both brands hold up over decades. What we’ve observed is that shops that end up with both brands (from acquisitions or bay expansions) rarely differentiate day-to-day. Techs get accustomed to whichever lift is in their bay within a month. Where we do see friction is in service — a shop with three Rotary and one Challenger has to keep separate parts on hand for the outlier lift, which adds inventory complexity. If you’re building a multi-bay shop from scratch and expect to expand, pick one brand and stay with it for the operational simplicity. If you’re adding one lift to an existing setup, match what you already have. The transmission bay conversation with the Urbandale shop owner ended with Rotary — matching his existing three-bay setup with a fourth SPO12.
Which we’d choose today
If we were building a pro shop from scratch in Urbandale today and we had to pick one brand across all bays, we’d pick Rotary. That’s not a slight to Challenger — it’s a reflection of our parts pipeline advantage in central Iowa. If we were doing the same exercise in Louisville or somewhere else in Challenger’s stronger service territory, we might flip our recommendation. Both brands are quality manufacturers with proven track records, US production, and enforceable warranties. The decision comes down to three factors: what’s your local parts pipeline, what’s your budget delta tolerance, and what does your existing equipment look like today. For our territory and our service model, Rotary wins on the first factor and ties on the second. For a shop willing to accept a slightly slower parts turnaround in exchange for lifetime structural coverage and a lower sticker, Challenger is a strong pick. Ignore the internet arguments about which brand is universally “better.” They’re both good. The right question is which one your local service network can support fastest when the lift is down and the car is stuck at height. That answer depends entirely on your geography.
