When an EV specialty shop in Marion called us last spring asking whether their new build should get overhead-cable or baseplate automotive two post lifts, they had already been told three conflicting things by three different sales reps. We install lifts across Iowa every week, and we hear the same overhead-vs-baseplate confusion at least twice a month. This piece pulls the myths apart, one at a time, so you can pick the right configuration for the actual work you do — and not the work a brochure imagines.

Myth one: overhead lifts always need an 11-foot ceiling

This is the myth we hear most, and it is only half true. Yes, most symmetric overhead automotive two post lifts want 11 to 12 feet of clearance under the shutoff bar. But asymmetric overhead builds come as low as 10 feet even after the crossbar is factored in. The Marion EV shop was told they needed 12 feet flat — they had 11 feet 2 inches. A single Rotary asymmetric configuration solved their problem in an afternoon spec call. Where the myth actually applies: you are lifting tall trucks or vans regularly. In that case an overhead build with a 12-foot ceiling can still be too short. The right answer is measure the highest vehicle you plan to service, add the arm carriage height at full extension, add six inches for the shutoff. If that number is over your ceiling, you go baseplate — or a taller-column overhead build. Do not guess. We have driven forty-five minutes to a shop to tell an owner their overhead lift would top out on their own service truck. That is not a mistake you want to make after the crane already dropped the columns.

Myth two: baseplate lifts are only for tall trucks

Not true either. Baseplate automotive two post lifts have one obvious advantage — no crossbar overhead — but they also have a floor tube tying the columns together. That tube is roughly two inches tall. If you roll on with a low-profile car and the underbody clears an inch, you’re going to hit the tube. Every low-profile EV owner we’ve talked to needs to know this before they buy. Baseplate is the right choice when you have a low ceiling and mostly service vehicles with six-plus inches of ground clearance, or you’re in a strip-mall bay with duct work overhead, or you want the fastest install because there is no top beam to hoist. Baseplate is the wrong choice when you’re doing a lot of transmission drops on Corvettes, Teslas, and slammed builds. The tube gets in the way. There is no universal winner. The right pick is the one that matches the vehicles that pay your bills — not the brochure that came in the mail. Our install team walks through the exact vehicle mix before we quote a configuration, every time.

What EV work actually needs from automotive two post lifts

Suspension and shock replacement on EVs looks similar to ICE work at first glance, but the battery pack changes the math. Most EVs put the pack low and wide. Your automotive two post lifts arm pads have to seat on factory pinch welds or reinforced jack points that clear the pack — you cannot freehand a cradle pad the way you might on an old Buick. The Marion shop does mostly Model 3 and Model Y suspension bushings, and their real requirement was pad flexibility, not lift height. We spec’d Rotary asymmetric arms with truck adapters so they could reach the reinforced jack points inboard of the pack on any variant that rolled in. Second point: EV shocks are heavier than most techs expect because the whole corner assembly on an EV carries more mass. A 10K capacity lift is fine on a Model Y — but if you plan to add F-150 Lightning or Rivian to your service mix, you’re already at six thousand pounds curb. Get 12K minimum. The Marion shop’s real numbers: measure before you spec

Here is what the Marion job actually looked like: 11 feet 2 inches under the joists, a 24 by 30 bay, five inches of concrete confirmed with a core sample, single-phase 220 volts. They wanted two lifts side by side with twelve feet between column centerlines. The initial quote from another vendor specified a symmetric overhead build — which, with the crossbar at 11 feet 4 inches nominal, was going to hit their joists. We measured on site. We adjusted to an asymmetric overhead configuration with a 10 foot 8 inch shutoff clearance. We laid out the column footprint with painter’s tape and had them walk through it with an open Model Y door — because the swing radius of a rear door on a Y is wider than most owners expect. That door-clearance issue is what saved them from buying columns too close together. The numbers that matter are: ceiling height at the beam, not the peak; concrete depth verified, not assumed; door swing on the widest vehicle you actually service. Get those three right and the rest of the spec falls out cleanly. Guess and you buy twice.

Concrete depth: what nobody tells you on the call

Most manufacturers publish a minimum concrete spec — usually four to four and a half inches at 3,000 PSI. Nearly every automotive two post lifts owner we deal with has never actually verified their slab. They know what the previous owner told them, or what the general contractor said fifteen years ago. That is not verification. A core sample costs a couple hundred dollars and takes an hour. We recommend it on every install where the age of the slab is unknown or the building has been remodeled. The Marion shop had one bay poured in 2004 and a second added in 2018. Same building, same floor to the eye — different mixes, different depths. The 2004 side came back at 5.1 inches. The 2018 side came back at 3.8 inches with rebar too shallow to help. We wound up placing both lifts on the 2004 side and rearranging the bay layout. If we had trusted “it’s all the same slab” we would have bolted a 10K column into a slab that could crack out under a full load. Never skip the core sample.

Weight capacity for EVs — why 10K is not always enough

The industry standard for years was 10,000-pound capacity on automotive two post lifts and it worked because most passenger cars weighed under 4,500 pounds curb. That math has shifted. A Rivian R1T runs about 7,150 pounds. A Ford F-150 Lightning Extended-Range is about 6,590. A GMC Hummer EV is over 9,000 pounds — actually beyond a standard 10K rating. If any of those vehicles are in your service mix, a 10K lift is either marginal or unsafe. Our recommendation for any EV specialty shop building out new: 12K minimum, 15K if you plan to touch electric trucks or full-size EVs. The cost difference from 10K to 12K on a Rotary or Challenger build is usually less than a mid-hundreds premium. It is the cheapest insurance you will buy in the whole install. We have never had a shop tell us they wished they had bought less capacity. We have had a dozen tell us they wish they had bought more. Do the math once. Buy once.
