Start With the Decision Tree: Budget First, Then Capacity

Every shop owner we talk to wants to start with the model number, but we always start with budget range and vehicle mix, because that’s what actually narrows the field. If you’re running a restoration shop doing inspections on everyday sedans, SUVs, and the occasional light truck, a 9,000 to 10,000 lb two post lift covers nearly everything that rolls through the door. If dually trucks or work vans show up regularly — like the farm shop customer near Earlham who needed to lift a one-ton dually — you’re looking at 12,000 lb or higher, and that changes the concrete and anchoring requirements too.

Once capacity is set, the next fork in the tree is arm style. Standard two-stage arms work fine for cars and light SUVs. Ceiling Height and Concrete: The Two Things That Decide Everything

For inspection work specifically, bay width determines how much walk-around room a technician has once the vehicle is at full rise. A typical two-car bay in the 16 to 20 foot range fits a standard automotive two post lift comfortably, but if you’re working dually trucks or full-size vans for inspections, you want closer to 30 to 40 feet of clear width so the arms and vehicle don’t crowd the walls or adjacent equipment.

We also look at where the columns land relative to your existing tool boards, jack storage, and exhaust hose reels. A restoration shop doing inspections all day doesn’t want to reposition a hose reel every time a truck comes in. Positioning the lift so the columns clear your air lines and electrical drops, and so the swing of the arms doesn’t interfere with a neighboring bay, is something we sketch out on site or from photos before we ever ship equipment. This is the layout conversation that separates a lift that works for inspections from one that just sits in the space.

Forklift on Site Changes the Install Timeline

One question we ask on nearly every quote is whether the shop has a forklift on site. Automotive two post lifts, especially in the 10,000 lb and up range, come in with columns and crossbeams heavy enough that having a forklift available on delivery day speeds the install significantly. If there’s no forklift, we plan around that with additional crew or equipment, and it’s worth mentioning up front so your install date doesn’t slip.

Lead time is the other piece that catches shop owners off guard. Depending on the manufacturer and configuration, lead time from order to delivery can run around a week to several weeks for standard configurations, longer for extended-height or specialty arm setups. Choosing Between Rotary and Challenger for Inspection Work

Rotary’s lineup covers everything from standard 9,000 lb bays up through extended-height 12,000 lb+ configurations with three-stage arms, which is what we speced for a dealership group needing taller lift height to match their existing fleet. Challenger’s E-series and similar models give a comparable option, and we’ve handled full relocations of Challenger two post lifts when a shop reorganizes floor space.

The honest answer on brand is that both are built for the daily-use, inspection-heavy environment, and the deciding factor usually comes down to arm configuration, color preference, and what’s already in the shop for parts and service familiarity. If you’ve had good luck with a particular brand before, we’ll usually recommend staying in that family so your technicians aren’t relearning arm restraints and pad adjustments on a new system mid-season.

Cable, Cylinder, and the Parts Side of Ownership
