Automotive two post lifts are usually the first big equipment decision an off-road builder makes when they finally get a real shop bay, and getting the sequencing wrong can cost more than the lift itself. We ran into this exact situation recently with a builder just outside Ames who was converting a pole barn into a proper overlanding fabrication and transmission service bay. He had the truck, the tools, and the ambition, but hadn’t thought through concrete, clearance, or drive-through flow before calling us. Why This Build-Out Started With a Phone Call, Not a Lift Order

Before we quote anything, we ask the same questions we ask every builder converting a barn or pole shed into a working bay: is there a pit, what’s the slab thickness, is there rebar, and do you have a forklift or dock to receive freight. In this Ames project, the slab had been poured for general storage, not for lift anchoring, so we had to confirm thickness and reinforcement before recommending a column spacing. Skipping that step is the single most common reason installs get delayed or redone.

The builder’s instinct was to pick the lift first and figure out the floor later. We flipped that order. Once we knew the slab would support standard anchor points, we could talk model selection with confidence instead of guessing. For anyone sequencing a similar build-out, the floor conversation always comes first, the equipment conversation comes second, and the transmission service workflow comes third. That order saves rework and keeps the install on schedule instead of stretching into a multi-visit fix.

Choosing Column Spacing and Overhead Clearance for a Lifted Rig

Overlanding builds run taller than stock trucks, often with roof racks, awnings, and roof-top tents already mounted before the truck ever sees a lift. That changes overhead clearance math considerably. We measured this build’s tallest vehicle with everything installed and worked backward to confirm ceiling height and column position would clear the rig at full rise. Automotive two post lifts vary in overall height between models, and a rack-loaded truck can eat clearance fast if nobody checks it first.

Column spacing mattered just as much. A wider stance gives more room to open doors and swing tools around the vehicle, which matters for transmission service where you’re pulling a pan, dropping a crossmember, or rolling a transmission jack underneath. We set the columns wide enough to keep the swing arms clear of long-travel suspension and aftermarket rock sliders, something a stock-spacing install would have fought against every single use.

Why Two Post Beat Four Post for This Transmission-Heavy Shop

The builder initially assumed a four-post drive-on setup would be simpler since there’s less precision needed to position the vehicle. But for transmission service, full underbody access is the priority, and a two-post configuration wins that argument every time. With the vehicle raised on frame-contact arms, there’s nothing blocking the pan, crossmember, or driveline the way runway rails would.

We see this same decision play out with fleet shops and independent garages across Iowa. If the primary work is oil changes, tire rotations, or storage, a runway-style setup earns its keep. If the shop is doing clutch jobs, transfer case swaps, or transmission rebuilds regularly, automotive two post lifts give techs the open access they need underneath without arms or rails in the way. For this Ames build, transmission service was the whole point of the bay, so the choice was straightforward once we laid it out.

Sequencing Concrete, Power, and Delivery Before the Lift Arrives

Freight and delivery logistics trip up more builds than people expect. We always ask whether there’s a forklift on site or a loading dock, because a two post lift arrives as several hundred pounds of steel split across columns, arms, and a power unit, and someone has to get it off the truck. In this case there was no forklift rated heavy enough, so we coordinated delivery timing with our install crew instead of leaving pallets sitting in a driveway.

Concrete curing and anchor set time also need to be built into the schedule, not treated as an afterthought. If a builder pours new slab specifically for the lift, that concrete needs real cure time before anchors go in under load. We’ve seen builds get delayed weeks because someone wanted to skip that step to make a deadline. Sequencing power drops for the hydraulic unit at the same time as the concrete and delivery planning keeps everything converging on install day instead of stretching into three separate trips.

Positioning the Lift for Workflow, Not Just Available Floor Space

A lot of garage builds default to centering the lift in the middle of the bay because it looks tidy on paper. We pushed back on that here. With a transmission service bay, you want a clear path to roll a transmission jack in from the side, plus room for a parts table and an impact cart without anyone squeezing past a support column. We positioned the lift closer to one wall, leaving a wide open aisle on the working side.

We also factored in door swing and the overhead door track, since a lifted overlanding truck needs real vertical clearance just to drive in before it ever reaches full rise. Automotive two post lifts need to sit far enough from the door that a raised vehicle doesn’t interfere with the door mechanism or lighting fixtures above. Getting this wrong means a lift that technically works but fights the builder every single day it’s used.

What This Build Taught Us About Sizing for Lifted and Modified Trucks

Weight capacity gets treated as an afterthought too often. A lifted overlanding truck with a winch bumper, skid plates, auxiliary fuel tank, and roof-top tent can weigh considerably more than the same truck stock. We sized this lift with margin above the modified curb weight, not the base spec sheet number, because builders keep adding gear over time and rarely subtract any of it.

We also talked through arm reach and pad placement for lifted suspension, since factory lift points shift once a truck has a suspension lift installed. Automotive two post lifts with adjustable arms and extended pads handle this better than fixed-arm setups. For anyone building out a similar shop, we’d rather quote a slightly heavier-duty lift up front than have a customer call back in a year asking about capacity upgrades once the truck’s build list has grown.

Once the slab was confirmed, clearance checked, column spacing set, and delivery logistics sorted, the actual install moved fast. That’s the payoff of sequencing everything correctly beforehand.
