Symmetric Arms: The Old Standard, Still Right for Trucks

Symmetric two-posts put both columns square to each other with equal-length arms fore and aft. The lift centers the vehicle exactly between the columns, which distributes weight evenly and makes the geometry predictable for trucks, vans, and anything with a long wheelbase or a heavy nose. If your Ames shop takes in a lot of half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickup work, symmetric is often the safer default because the vehicle is naturally balanced and the arms do not need to reach across the vehicle to make pickup points. For automotive two post lifts intended for a truck-heavy tire and alignment operation, symmetric is a legitimate choice.

The tradeoff is passenger door clearance. On a symmetric lift the driver has to squeeze between the column and the door edge to exit a sedan, and on a lowered coupe the door will strike the column. Techs learn to open the door before they lift and to angle the vehicle slightly off-center to steal an extra inch of clearance. For a pure truck bay this is not a real concern. For a mixed bay it becomes a daily annoyance and eventually a body-panel repair when someone gets careless. The choice really does come down to fleet mix, not personal preference or brand loyalty.

Asymmetric Arms: The Modern Default for Mixed Bays

Asymmetric two-posts rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees toward the rear of the bay and give you shorter front arms and longer rear arms. That shifts the vehicle forward on the lift, which lets the driver step out cleanly without the door contacting the column. For an Ames tire and alignment shop that sees a mix of sedans, crossovers, and light trucks, asymmetric is nearly always the right answer. It also gives the technician better access to the driver-side underbody because the front arm folds back further out of the way. Nine out of ten automotive two post lifts we install in mixed-fleet shops are asymmetric.

The catch with asymmetric geometry is that the balance point is intentionally forward-biased. If you put a heavy long-bed dually on an asymmetric two-post without paying attention to arm placement, the rear of the vehicle will feel light and the rear arms will want to slide back. It is not unsafe if you set the arms correctly, but it takes technician training and a habit of double-checking the arm restraints before lifting. Most Ames shops that own asymmetric lifts have a laminated card at the column that lists the arm positions for their top ten vehicle types. That habit is worth adopting from day one.

Versymmetric: The Compromise That Actually Works

Versymmetric arm geometry is the middle ground. The arms swing through a wider range so the same lift can operate as symmetric for a heavy truck and asymmetric for a compact car. Rotary calls this SmartArm on some models, Challenger uses a similar variable-geometry design, and BendPak offers its own version. For an Ames tire and alignment shop where the fleet mix changes with the season, versymmetric solves both problems in one purchase. It costs a few hundred dollars more than a pure asymmetric, but the operational flexibility usually earns that back in the first year.

Where we still push customers toward a fixed geometry is when the shop is genuinely single-mission. A truck-only alignment shop should buy symmetric and forget the option. A quick-service oil and tire shop that never touches anything heavier than a Ford Explorer should buy asymmetric and forget the option. The versymmetric versatility only pays off when you actually use both ends of the range regularly. For most Ames retail tire operations, we recommend it. For dedicated commercial fleet accounts, symmetric is usually cleaner. This is exactly the kind of nuance a good site visit clears up in ten minutes.

Brake Service: Why Arm Length Matters More Than You Think

Brake work is the second most common reason Ames shops buy automotive two post lifts, and the failure mode is almost always insufficient arm reach. Standard three-stage front arms and telescoping rear arms give you about 25 inches folded and 60 inches extended. That covers everything from a Miata to a full-size sedan comfortably. Where it falls short is on a long-wheelbase crew cab pickup, where the standard rear arm cannot reach the manufacturer-designated rear pickup point without stretching to the very end of its telescope. At full extension the arm is measurably weaker than mid-stroke.

The fix is to spec extended-reach rear arms as a factory option or to buy a lift model that ships with them standard. On a Rotary SPO12 the extended-reach option pushes the rear arm out another eight inches. On a Challenger CL12 the extended-length arm serves the same function. If your shop rotates a lot of Ford F-250 crew cabs, Ram 3500s, or Silverado 3500 duallies through the brake bay, this option is not optional. Buy the extended arms in the original order, spec the tall truck adapter stack in the same order, and you will never fight arm placement again.

Arm Restraints: The Feature Cheap Lifts Cheat On

Every ALI Gold two-post ships with positive arm restraints that lock the arms in place under load so they cannot swing outward if the vehicle shifts. That single feature is where discount imports cut corners. Some cheap lifts use gravity-drop pins that only engage after the arm has already moved. ALI Gold lifts use a positive-locking gear mechanism that engages the moment the arm stops swinging and does not release until the arm is deliberately unlocked. On a shop full of technicians turning brake rotors and bumping arms during wheel work, that difference matters every single day.

When we walk an Ames shop through the safety comparison, this is the demo we do. Ceiling, Concrete, and Bay Layout in Ames

Ames commercial buildings from the 1970s and 1980s often have 12-foot clear ceilings, which is exactly the borderline height for a standard-height two-post with an overhead cutoff bar. If your ceiling is 12 feet even and you want a standard overhead unit, we usually recommend switching to a baseplate-connected design like the Rotary SPOA10 or the Challenger E10, which route the equalizer cable through the floor instead of overhead. That gets you full rise without hitting the ceiling and preserves the ability to service tall vehicles. Concrete needs to be a minimum four-and-a-quarter inches of 3,000 psi, cured 28 days, and reasonably flat.

Bay layout in an Ames tire shop typically wants 12 feet column-to-column with 14 feet of overall clear width and a tire storage rack behind the lift. Do not put the two-post directly behind the overhead door on center or the door track will interfere with arm rotation. Offset the lift 18 inches from door center and orient the arms so the front of the vehicle points into the bay. If you want a wheel balancer and a tire changer within reach of the lifted vehicle, position them on the wall opposite the workbench so the tech can walk a tire six feet from wheel to balancer. Small layout details like this multiply out to hours of saved labor per week.
