Symmetric Arms: The Straight Shot for Driveline Drops
A symmetric configuration centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms on both sides. For driveline work — dropping a driveshaft, pulling a transmission, or servicing a rear differential — that dead-center balance gives a tech open air on both sides of the vehicle without the front columns crowding the wheel wells. We’ve set these up for small fleet operators running pickups and vans where the crew is constantly under the middle of the truck rather than working one specific corner.
The tradeoff is door access. Symmetric lifts put the columns closer to the doors, which is fine if your techs are climbing in and out through the bed or working strictly underneath. For a fleet that’s mostly doing driveline and exhaust — not cabin diagnostics — that tradeoff barely matters. We size these by duty rating first, usually in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound range for one-ton trucks and cargo vans, then talk through overhead clearance since a lot of pole barns and older fleet garages have ceiling heights that dictate the whole equipment selection before brand or arm style even comes into play.
Asymmetric Arms: Built for Exhaust Access and Door Swing
Asymmetric two post lifts shift the front columns rearward and the arms offset, opening up the front doors while still centering the load correctly. For exhaust work specifically, this matters less about door swing and more about where the front arms land relative to the catalytic converter and mid-pipe. A well-designed asymmetric setup keeps the front arm pads clear of common exhaust hanger points, so a tech isn’t repositioning the vehicle twice to get a pad under the frame without landing on a pipe.
We see asymmetric configurations more often in shops that mix driveline work with general service — oil changes, brake jobs, inspections — because the door access speeds up the in-and-out traffic. If your fleet bay is doing 80 percent exhaust and driveline and 20 percent everything else, asymmetric is usually still the right call simply because it doesn’t sacrifice much on the driveline side while gaining real time on daily service work.
Side-by-Side: What We Actually Recommend for Small Fleets
When a small fleet operator asks us to compare configurations, we walk the bay first. Ceiling height, concrete thickness, whether there’s a forklift on site for unloading, and how many vehicles rotate through in a day all factor in before we talk arm style. A shop with 8-inch concrete and rebar and an 18-foot ceiling has more flexibility than one working with older 6-inch slab and a 12-foot header — that alone can eliminate one configuration before we even get to lift capacity.
For fleets doing heavy exhaust and driveline turnover, we generally steer toward asymmetric arms on a 10,000 to 12,000 pound capacity lift, because the door clearance saves real labor minutes across a full day of vehicles cycling through. But if the fleet is running one-ton duallies or box trucks where the wheelbase and axle weight distribution matter more than door swing, symmetric wins. There’s no universal right answer — it’s a function of what’s actually rolling through the bay day to day, and we’d rather spend twenty minutes on the phone getting that right than sell a configuration that fights the shop’s real workflow for the next fifteen years.
