We get calls almost every week from small fleet operators around central Iowa trying to figure out the smartest way to lay out their bay before they commit to a lift. Automotive two post lifts are the backbone of most transmission service work, but where you put the posts, where the power unit sits, and which way the arms swing can make or break your daily workflow. We recently helped a small fleet outside Webster City rework their bay layout, and it got us thinking about how differently two shops running the same size lift can end up with completely different results depending on setup choices.

Layout A: Power Unit Mounted on the Post
The most common setup we install is the power unit bolted right to one of the columns, usually near the top or mid-height. For a lot of small fleets doing transmission work, this is the simplest and cheapest way to go. There’s less conduit to run, the hydraulic lines are short, and the technician can reach the controls from either side of the bay without walking far. For general repair and tire work, this layout works fine in the vast majority of shops we service.
Where it gets tricky is when you’re pulling transmissions or doing heavy underbody work and need clear access on both sides without a technician bumping into the unit. We’ve also run into situations, like the one in Webster City, where a returning technician had a new pacemaker and couldn’t be within a couple feet of the 220v power unit. That single medical restriction forced a full reconfiguration. If you’ve got any chance of that kind of issue down the road, or you just want more open floor space around the lift, it’s worth thinking through before installation day rather than after.
Layout B: Power Unit at the Top with a Remote Down Below
The second configuration moves the power unit up top and drops a remote control down at floor level, sometimes on the opposite post. This is exactly the conversion we did for that Webster City dealership. It keeps the 220v power unit up and away from the technician’s normal working zone while still giving full lift control from the ground. For shops running automotive two post lifts in a tight bay, this setup also frees up wall and floor space near the post base.
The tradeoff is a bit more labor and material during install since you’re running control cable a longer distance, and it typically isn’t something you spec from the factory on every model. It’s a conversion, not a stock configuration, and it takes an installer who knows the electrical routing on that specific lift. We’ve done these conversions on multiple Challenger units and it holds up fine once it’s wired correctly. If a shop asks us to quote this style, we tell them straight up: it costs a little more up front, but it solves real problems for shops with health restrictions, tight walkways, or techs who just want the controls closer to where they’re standing.
Bay Spacing and Concrete Considerations
Before either layout works, the concrete has to be right. We had a customer near Monroe planning a pole building addition who wanted to know exactly how far the posts needed to sit from the front wall, the outside wall, and each other before he cut rebar into his slab. That’s the right question to ask. For most 9,000 to 10,000 lb automotive two post lifts, we need enough clearance from walls so the arms can swing fully under a vehicle, and enough width between posts to fit a range of wheelbases without the vehicle doors hitting the columns when open.
Ceiling height matters too. A shop with 12-foot rafters has more flexibility than one working with 11.5 feet, and lighting fixtures can eat into that margin faster than people expect. We always tell customers to send us their slab thickness, rebar plan, and rafter height before pouring, because moving a post location after concrete is set is a lot more expensive than planning it right the first time.
Comparing Cycle Times for Transmission Work
When we walk a small fleet through transmission service workflow, cycle time is the real metric that matters, not just lift capacity. With the power-unit-on-post layout, a tech typically has to step around the column to reach controls, which adds seconds every single lift cycle. Over a full day of transmission pulls, that adds up. With the remote-down layout, the tech stays in one working position longer, which several of our repeat customers have told us shaves real time off busy days.
We’ve also seen shops split the difference by running one bay each way, so techs can choose based on the job. A fleet doing heavy transmission and driveline work day in and day out often prefers the open-access remote setup, while a bay used for quick tire and brake jobs does fine with the standard on-post configuration. There’s no universally correct answer, it depends on what your bay actually does most of the week.
Capacity and Model Selection for Fleet Use
We’ve quoted everything from 8,000 lb two-post units for daily shop use up through 10,000 lb Challenger and Rotary models for heavier fleet trucks. A shop in Pella recently had us install a 10,000 lb Challenger two post lift they’d purchased used, and we walked them through inspection and setup before it ever touched a vehicle. For fleets that mix light-duty and heavier trucks, we generally recommend sizing up rather than down, since undersized automotive two post lifts get pushed past their rated capacity more often than shops realize.
Arm style matters too. A symmetric lift with a rolling jack option handles alignment-style work better, while an asymmetric configuration gives more door clearance for daily in-and-out traffic. Small fleets running mixed vehicle types tend to do best with a versatile arm setup rather than something specialized for one vehicle class.
Logistics: Forklifts, Freight, and Lead Time
Every install conversation eventually comes down to logistics. We always ask if there’s a forklift or skid steer on site, because without one, unloading freight becomes a bigger job than the install itself. Most automotive two post lifts ship on a truck that expects a forklift offload, and lead times run anywhere from about a week and a half up to several weeks depending on the model and whether it’s a common configuration or something older and less common.
We also walk customers through what’s included, freight, delivery, install labor, and startup oil, so there aren’t surprises on install day. Fleets that plan ahead, like the addition being built near Monroe for next year, give us time to coordinate wiring, post placement, and delivery scheduling well before the truck shows up.
Choosing the Right Layout for Your Shop
At the end of the day, the right layout for automotive two post lifts comes down to how your shop actually works, not just what’s cheapest to install. If you’re running straightforward tire and brake bays, the standard on-post power unit setup will serve you well and keep install costs down. If your fleet does heavy transmission work, has staffing considerations like medical restrictions, or just wants more open floor space, the top-mounted power unit with a floor remote is worth the extra install time.
