The crew chief for a small dirt-track team outside Ames called us last spring with a very specific problem: he needed automotive two post lifts in his shop so he could pull transmissions out of a hauler-load of race cars between Friday and Saturday night, and he had a budget that was maybe half of what a brand-new commercial column set costs. The honest answer is that it depends on four things in a specific order: your budget ceiling, your heaviest vehicle, your building, and your tolerance for downtime. Start With the Number You Will Not Go Past

Every lift conversation should start with a hard budget number, not a model name. We ask customers to tell us the figure they will genuinely not exceed, including install, and then we work backward. The reason is simple: two-post pricing spreads across a wide band. Entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb units sit at the bottom, mid-tier 10,000 to 12,000 lb clear-floor models sit in the middle, and 15,000 lb-plus commercial columns with three-stage arms sit well above that. Install, permits if your city wants them, and a concrete cut or pour if your slab is thin all stack on top.

The crew chief’s number was tight, and that told us immediately he was shopping either a lower-capacity new unit or a good used one. What we would not do is sell him a stripped-down lift that barely met his weight requirement just to hit the number. Race cars are light, but the hauler’s dually tow rig was not, and he admitted he would eventually put it on the lift. Once you know the budget and the real heaviest vehicle, the field of automotive two post lifts narrows fast. Half the bad lift purchases we get called out to fix started with someone shopping by price alone and discovering the capacity or the arm reach was wrong three months later. Write your number down, then stop looking at anything that requires you to move it.

Capacity: Rate for the Truck You Will Own in Five Years

We hear “I only work on cars” more than any other line, and it is almost never true five years out. A shop in southern Iowa told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 lbs; within two seasons he was doing brake work on three-quarter-ton pickups. Capacity is the one spec you cannot upgrade later, so buy past your current need. For a mixed passenger and light-truck shop, 10,000 lbs is the practical floor and 12,000 lbs is the number we recommend most often in central Iowa. If duallies, ambulances, or box trucks are in your future, jump to 15,000 lbs and be done with it.

Capacity also drives arm geometry, and arm geometry drives whether transmission work is pleasant or miserable. Three-stage front arms with low-profile adapters reach the pinch welds on a lowered car and still stretch out to a long-wheelbase truck. Symmetric versus asymmetric matters here too: asymmetric columns rotate the vehicle back so you can open doors, which is great for general service, while symmetric setups center the load and suit heavier trucks and transmission drops where you want even balance and room to roll a jack underneath. Your Building Decides More Than Your Wallet Does

Slab and ceiling are the two hard limits. A two-post column concentrates the entire vehicle load into a small anchor footprint, so we want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and honestly we prefer five or more for anything over 10,000 lbs. A customer in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is exactly why we core-test or at least hammer-sound before anchoring. If the pour is thin or cracked, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad under each column, which is cheaper than you think and infinitely cheaper than a lift that walks.

Ceiling height sets the second limit. Clear-floor overhead models need roughly 12 feet to be comfortable and more if you want a truck up to full height. A 139-inch ceiling like one North Dakota shop described puts you in baseplate territory or a low-ceiling overhead variant. The crew chief’s shop had a 12-foot sidewall pole building, which was workable but tight for the tall cab of his tow rig. We also look at door width, floor drains, in-floor heat lines, and whether there is a wall or loft crowding one side. Anchors near a slab edge or a saw-cut joint are a real problem. Measure the room before you shortlist automotive two post lifts, not after the freight truck arrives.

When a Used Lift Is the Right Call

Used can absolutely be the smart buy, and we say that as a company that sells new equipment. The candidates we like are name-brand columns with a documented service history, matched cables and sheaves, no visible column distortion, and a legible capacity plate. A used Rotary or Challenger from a dealership that traded up is often a better machine than a new no-name import at the same price, because parts availability is the whole ballgame. We stock cables, cylinders, arm restraints, and lock components for the major brands, so a fifteen-year-old Rotary is repairable next week, not next quarter.

The candidates we walk away from are the ones with no data plate, mixed-and-matched parts, welded repairs on the carriage or arms, and a seller who cannot say when the cables were last replaced. Cables and hydraulic cylinders are wear items, and if they are original on a well-used lift you should budget to replace them immediately — that cost belongs in your used-lift math. So do freight, rigging, disassembly, and reinstall. We have seen used automotive two post lifts land at nearly new-unit pricing once someone added it all up. The crew chief ended up buying a used 12,000 lb clear-floor unit from a shop that closed, and we replaced both cables, resealed the cylinder, and re-anchored it into a fresh pad. New Equipment: What the Extra Money Actually Buys

When someone can stretch to new, we tell them plainly what the premium buys. First, warranty — structural coverage measured in years, not a handshake. Second, current safety design: automatic arm restraints, dual-point lock releases, upgraded overhead micro-switches, and hydraulic components built to today’s standards. Third, documentation. A new lift arrives with an ALI certification label where applicable, a real manual, torque specs, and a parts diagram that matches the machine in front of you. That last item saves hours every time something needs service.

The fourth thing is configuration freedom. Buy new and you choose column style, capacity, arm package, adapter set, and accessories to match your work instead of inheriting somebody else’s choices. A transmission-heavy shop might add a set of tall truck adapters and a rolling jack bridge; a general repair bay might prioritize low-profile pads and asymmetric arms for door clearance. For shops running billable hours, the math often favors new anyway: one week of downtime waiting on an obscure part for an orphan brand can erase the savings. If you are a hobbyist, a race team, or a one-bay operation with time to spare, a well-vetted used unit is money well spent.

Installation, Anchoring, and the Paperwork Nobody Reads

Installation is where good lift purchases go sideways. The sequence matters: layout and squaring, drilling to spec depth, torquing anchors to the manufacturer’s value, plumbing and bleeding the hydraulics, setting the equalization so both carriages rise together, and verifying every mechanical lock engages and releases. We shim columns to plumb rather than forcing them, because a column that leans loads the carriage unevenly and eats slide blocks. Then we run the unit to full height empty, then with a vehicle, and check lock timing at every stop.

The paperwork matters too. Keep the manual, the anchor torque spec, the capacity plate photo, and a written record of every inspection. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and insurance carriers increasingly ask for it. If a lift ever fails in a way that hurts someone, that folder is the difference between a claim and a catastrophe. Putting the Decision Tree Together

Here is the whole framework in order. One: set a hard budget including install. Two: name your heaviest realistic vehicle and add margin — that gives you capacity. Three: measure ceiling height, slab thickness, door width, and side clearances — that gives you overhead versus baseplate and symmetric versus asymmetric. Four: decide how much downtime you can absorb. If the answer is “none,” buy new with a warranty and stocked parts. If you have flexibility and a good used candidate from a supported brand, buy used and budget for cables, cylinder seals, and fresh anchors.

Five: verify parts support before you sign anything. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that determines whether your lift is a twenty-year asset or a five-year headache.
