Daily maintenance on one-ton trucks, service vans, and the occasional dually means you want headroom above your heaviest vehicle’s actual weight, not just the number on the door sticker. We generally push truck-focused shops toward 10,000 lb to 14,000 lb capacity rather than the standard 9,000 lb consumer-grade lift, because a loaded service truck or a truck with a bed full of tools and equipment can run heavier than people expect. A municipal shop we’ve quoted specifically wanted 14,000 lb capacity for exactly this reason, sizing up front rather than finding out mid-lift that they were near the ceiling of their equipment’s rating.

Undersizing capacity is the most common mistake we see in truck shops, and it’s the one that’s hardest to fix after install since a new lift means a new install, not just an upgrade. If there’s any chance your fleet grows into heavier trucks, medium-duty box trucks, or anything with a plow or liftgate attached, size up now rather than replacing the lift again in three years.

Arm Configuration and Swing Clearance for Trucks

Truck-specific two-post lifts need longer, heavier-duty arms than a standard passenger car setup, and the arm reach matters more than most shop owners expect until they’re trying to pick up a crew cab with a long wheelbase. Swing arm lifts give you the flexibility to position the pads correctly under different frame configurations, which matters when one day you’re lifting a compact SUV and the next you’re lifting a one-ton dually with dual rear wheels. Get the arm and pad specs matched to your actual vehicle mix before you commit to a lift, not after.

We also see shops overlook post spacing until they’re actually trying to drive a wide truck between the columns. Wider trucks with towing mirrors or dual rear wheels need more clearance than a standard passenger vehicle bay, and that changes your column spacing requirement on the automotive two post lifts you’re comparing. Keep an eye on lift symmetry, if one side is coming down noticeably off-level from the other, that’s usually a cylinder or lowering valve issue worth calling in before it gets worse, not something to keep running through.
