A shop adds an air compressor, a welder, or a second lift onto a circuit that was only ever sized for the original unit, and suddenly the breaker trips every time the motor kicks on under a heavy trailer axle. We see this constantly with RV and trailer shops because the vehicles being lifted are heavier and unevenly loaded compared to typical passenger car work, so the motor works harder and pulls more current more often.

The fix is almost always the same: a dedicated circuit sized correctly for the specific lift model, run separately from anything else in the bay. We spec this out during the quoting process so it’s handled before the lift ever arrives, but if you’re a year in and just now running into breaker trips, it’s worth having a tech look at the panel rather than assuming the lift itself is failing. We’ve had calls where someone changed a capacitor on the motor thinking that was the fix, and it wasn’t, the wiring upstream was the actual problem the whole time.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase: What It Actually Means for Your Bay

Single-phase power is what most standalone shops and home garages have available, and the good news is that plenty of quality two post lifts, including models sized for RV and trailer work, come in single-phase versions. Three-phase power delivers smoother, more efficient motor operation and is common in larger commercial buildings, dealership service bays, and industrial parks. If your building already has three-phase service run to it, some lift models offer a version built specifically to use it, and there can be a performance benefit.

The mistake we see shops make is choosing a lift model based on price or capacity alone without confirming which phase configuration matches their building. We always confirm phase availability before quoting, and if a shop isn’t sure what they have, we walk through it on the phone or ask for a photo of the panel. It’s a five-minute conversation that saves a truck showing up with the wrong lift, or worse, an electrician getting called out on install day to sort out a mismatch that could’ve been caught weeks earlier.
