Decoding the model numbers before you compare prices
Lift model numbers look like gibberish until you know the pattern, and once you do, half the shopping confusion disappears. On a Rotary SPO12, the “SPO” tells you it’s a surface-mounted, overhead-style two-post and the “12” is capacity in thousands of pounds. Challenger’s CL10 follows the same logic — clear-floor, 10,000 lb. When you see a designation like “9LC,” you’re usually looking at a 9,000 lb clear-floor unit from a value-tier brand. The letters matter more than the number for most home buyers, because they tell you whether the equalization system runs overhead through a crossbar or underfoot through a baseplate.
We push people to read those letters carefully because they dictate what the lift does to your garage. Overhead models put a beam and cable trough between the columns at the top, which eats headroom but leaves the floor completely open. Baseplate models keep the ceiling clear and run the cables in a low channel across the drive-through area, which is fine for a transmission jack but annoying for a floor creeper. Neither is better in the abstract. The Council Bluffs buyer we mentioned had 12-foot sidewalls and a 16-foot door, so overhead was easy for him. Above 10,000, the conversation changes. We field regular calls from shops asking about 14,000 lb capacity, and those are legitimate for dually trucks, box vans, and anything with a service body. But 14K means taller columns, a longer arm reach, and typically a thicker slab requirement, and the freight and install costs climb with it. For a home garage doing brake jobs, exhaust work, and alignment prep, that capacity is money spent on nothing. Symmetric versus asymmetric arms, and what alignment work needs
This is the spec that trips up first-timers hardest. On a symmetric lift, the columns face each other directly and the four arms are equal length, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts with roughly half its weight ahead of the columns and half behind. That’s ideal for trucks and vans with long wheelbases and long door swings you don’t care about. On an asymmetric lift, the columns are rotated inward about 30 degrees and the front arms are shorter than the rear, which shifts the vehicle back and lets a car door open past the post.
If you plan to do any alignment-adjacent work — setting toe, checking camber, chasing a pull after new tie rods — asymmetric usually wins for cars because you can actually get in and out of the driver’s seat with the vehicle in the air. Some models split the difference with adjustable columns you can set either way, and those are worth the small upcharge if your garage will see both a sedan and a pickup. Keep in mind that a two-post lift is not an alignment rack; it doesn’t have the runways, the turnplates, or the rear slip plates a true alignment setup requires. What it does give you is unobstructed access to every steering and suspension fastener, which is where 80% of alignment work actually happens. Concrete, ceiling height, and the specs that come from your building
Half the spec sheet is about your garage, not the lift. Most 10,000 lb two-post units call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty want more — a 12,000 lb model may specify five or six inches. We’ve had callers tell us their slab is “about five inches, maybe less,” which is exactly the uncertainty that gets a lift anchored into something it shouldn’t be. If you don’t have pour records, we core-drill or hammer-test a spot before we commit to anchors. Cutting a pad and pouring a proper footing is cheaper than a column that walks under load.
Ceiling height sets your ceiling on model choice, literally. Overhead two-post lifts typically need 12 feet or more of clear height to reach full rise; there are low-ceiling versions that top out around 11 feet with reduced lift height. A buyer we worked with had a hard 139-inch maximum height, which put him squarely in baseplate territory. Also check your door header, your lighting, and whether garage door tracks cross the bay — we’ve relocated more than a few openers to make room. Finally, look at bay width. You want roughly 12 feet of usable width to comfortably work around a vehicle on a two-post, and 18 feet of depth is a reasonable floor for a car. Measure all of it before you order, because freight companies do not accept “it didn’t fit” as a return reason.
Overhead versus baseplate: living with each one
We get asked which configuration we’d put in our own garage, and the answer depends on what we’d be doing in there. Overhead-style units give you a genuinely clean floor, which matters if you roll a creeper, sweep often, or plan to park the lift over a drain. The overhead beam also carries the shutoff bar that stops a tall vehicle before it hits your ceiling, which is a real safety feature. The tradeoff is lost headroom and the fact that a raised SUV’s roof and the beam are competing for the same space.
Baseplate models trade the floor for the ceiling. The cable channel across the drive-on area is only an inch or two tall and vehicles drive over it fine, but you’ll feel it with a low jack or a rolling toolbox. What you gain is the ability to run a tall vehicle nearly to full rise in a building where an overhead unit would be limited. In older Council Bluffs garages with 10-foot ceilings and exposed joists, baseplate is often the only workable answer. Maintenance differs slightly too: overhead cable sheaves are easier to inspect because they’re at eye level on a ladder, while baseplate sheaves live in the channel and collect grit. What the price tiers actually buy you
Two-post pricing sorts into three broad tiers, and the differences are real even if they’re not visible in a product photo. The value tier — think imported 9,000 and 10,000 lb clear-floor units — gets you a functional lift with a warranty measured in a couple of years, thinner steel, simpler locks, and hydraulic components that may be harder to source in five years. A home user does not need commercial duty cycle, but some buy it anyway because resale on a used Rotary is strong and because the parts availability is essentially permanent.
