Most of the calls we take about automotive two post lifts start the same way: somebody has a pole building, a project car, and a job they are tired of doing on jack stands. Last spring a weekend mechanic in eastern Nebraska called us because he had an oil pan gasket to replace on a truck, and he had already crawled under it twice on ramps and given up both times. He had a 30×40 shop, a 12-foot sidewall, and no idea whether his bay could actually take a lift. We walked him through the same pre-purchase checklist we use on every site visit, and it saved him from ordering the wrong column height. Here it is, start to finish, from an Iowa crew that installs this equipment every week.

Start With the Ceiling, Not the Lift

The single most common mistake we see on residential and hobby installs is picking a model first and measuring second. Clearfloor two-post designs route the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through an overhead crossbar, and that crossbar needs real space. A typical 10,000 lb clearfloor column stands somewhere in the neighborhood of 11 to 12 feet tall depending on the manufacturer and the extension option you choose. If your pole building has a 12-foot sidewall but the trusses drop lower in the middle of the span, the number that matters is the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint — not the wall height on your building plans.

The eastern Nebraska customer measured 139 inches to the bottom of his lowest truss, which is tight but workable. We steered him toward a baseplate configuration instead, where the hose and cables run through a low channel across the floor and the columns stay shorter. You drive over a small bump every time, which some people hate and most people forget about within a week. Baseplate designs also give you unlimited overhead clearance, which matters if you want to raise a tall truck or eventually hang a hoist above the bay. When ceiling height is the constraint, baseplate wins almost every time on automotive two post lifts, and it usually costs less too.

Concrete Is Not Optional, and Thickness Lies

We get asked constantly whether five inches of concrete is enough. The honest answer is that most manufacturers specify a minimum of four to six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete depending on capacity, and that the pour has to be sound all the way down. A homeowner in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less,” which is exactly the kind of uncertainty that ends with an anchor spinning in crumbly aggregate. Before we set a single column, we core or hammer-drill a test hole in the actual anchor locations. Old pole barn floors are notorious for thinning out toward the doors and in the middle of the span where the crew ran short on mud.

If the slab is too thin, the fix is a cut-out and pad pour — typically a 4×4 or 5×5 foot section per column, taken down to grade, poured at eight to twelve inches with rebar, and cured before anchoring. That adds a couple weeks and a modest cost, and it is far cheaper than a lift that shifts under load. Radiant floor heat is another wrinkle: if you have PEX in the slab, we scan before drilling. Nobody wants to hit a heat loop. Every conversation we have about automotive two post lifts eventually comes back to the floor, because that slab is the only thing holding the whole thing upright.

Laying Out the Bay Around the Work, Not the Walls

Column spacing gets all the attention, but bay layout is really about where you stand. For the oil pan gasket job that started this whole conversation, our customer needed to work directly under the front of the engine with a transmission jack, a drain pan, and enough room to swing a long extension. If you shove the lift against the sidewall to save space, you lose the walk-around on one side and you will regret it the first time you need to pull a subframe bolt from the far corner.

Our general rule is a minimum of three feet of clear working space on each side of the vehicle at full lift, plus enough depth in front for a rolling toolbox and behind for the bay door to close on a full-size pickup. In a 30×40 shop that is easy. In a 24×24 detached garage, it means the lift goes in the middle bay and the workbench moves. We also plan the air drop and the drain location during layout, because running an air hose across the drive-through path is how people trip and how hoses get pinched under tires. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Arms for a Hobby Bay

A symmetric two-post sets the vehicle centered between the columns with equal-length arms, which balances the load evenly and handles trucks and vans beautifully. The tradeoff is that the driver’s door opens right into a column. That is fine on a shop truck. It is annoying on a restored car you care about, and it is genuinely hard to live with if you are getting in and out of the vehicle a dozen times during a job.

Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, which shifts the vehicle back and puts the doors clear of the posts. For a hobbyist working on passenger cars and light trucks, asymmetric is usually the better daily experience. Some manufacturers offer a versymmetric arm package that does both reasonably well, letting you spot a long-wheelbase truck symmetrically or a sedan asymmetrically on the same equipment. We ask two questions to sort this out: what is the heaviest and longest vehicle you will lift, and how often will you climb in and out with the car in the air? For the Nebraska oil pan job the answer was a half-ton pickup and constantly, so asymmetric arms with low-profile pads made the call easy. Buyers comparing automotive two post lifts should always ask which arm geometry they are quoting, because it is rarely stated up front.

Capacity: Be Honest About the Heaviest Thing You Own

A lot of buyers overspend here and a few dangerously underspend. A caller from North Dakota told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 pounds and he was looking at a 9,000 lb capacity unit — that is a sensible margin. Another customer wanted 10,000 lb capacity to do oil changes and brake work on customer cars, which is the standard commercial choice for good reason. The 10,000 lb class covers essentially every passenger car, SUV, and half-ton pickup on the road with room to spare, and it is where the widest selection of arms, adapters, and replacement parts lives.

Where people get into trouble is dually pickups, one-ton work trucks, and anything with a service body or plow. Those creep past 9,000 pounds fast, and center-of-gravity issues matter as much as raw weight. If a three-quarter-ton or bigger truck is in your future, jump to the 12,000 or 15,000 lb class now rather than replacing the equipment in three years. Capacity ratings also assume even distribution across all four arms — a lopsided load on a 10,000 lb rated unit can overload a single arm long before the total weight hits the rating. Installation, Anchors, and What DIY Really Costs

Plenty of buyers tell us they do not want installation, and sometimes that is the right call. If you have a forklift or telehandler, a helper, a hammer drill, a torque wrench, and a full afternoon, standing columns and setting anchors is within reach for a mechanically capable person. The manual matters — anchor torque specs, shim limits, and cable tension are not suggestions. Most manufacturers cap total shim thickness under a base plate at around half an inch, and exceeding it voids the warranty and creates a real tipping risk.

What we see go wrong on DIY installs: over-torqued anchors that crack the slab, under-tensioned equalization cables that let the carriages drift out of sync, hydraulic lines routed where they chafe, and no load test before the first real vehicle goes up. Our installers do a full cycle test with weight, verify the safety locks engage in every position, bleed the system, and hand over the paperwork. If something fails in year two, we already know exactly how the unit was set. Parts, Service, and Thinking Five Years Out

The purchase is the easy part. What determines whether you are happy in year five is whether you can get a cable, a lock spring, a cylinder seal kit, or a power unit when you need one. Before you buy, ask a simple question: if the hydraulic cylinder starts weeping in 2029, who ships me a seal kit?
