Every few months we get a call from a European-marque specialty shop in the Iowa City area that has convinced itself of something untrue about automotive two post lifts, and that belief is about to cost them somewhere between a few hundred dollars and an entire bay’s worth of downtime. The myths are remarkably consistent: that all of them hold value the same way, that a taller column always means more clearance, that transmission work needs a four-post, that resale is a lost cause once a unit is bolted down. We install and service this equipment across eastern Iowa every week, and we buy, sell, and relocate used units often enough to know what actually happens. Here’s the honest version.

Myth One: “Transmission Work Requires a Four-Post”

This is the one we hear most from independent European shops, and it’s backwards. A four-post is a drive-on platform designed for alignment, storage, and quick inspection. It puts runways directly under the vehicle, which is exactly where a transmission jack needs to be. Pulling a ZF 8HP or a DSG unit out of a car sitting on runways means fighting the platform the entire time, or buying a rolling bridge jack to get the wheels free. Two-post units, by contrast, lift by the pinch welds or frame and leave the entire underside of the car open. Nothing is in the way of a jack, a bellhousing, or your shoulders.

The specialty shops around Iowa City doing Audi, BMW, and Volvo driveline work almost universally end up on a symmetric or asymmetric two-post for that reason. A 10,000 lb clearfloor model with a low-profile arm package handles a lowered Golf R and a loaded X5 in the same bay. The one legitimate argument for a four-post in transmission service is when you also need alignment capability and only have room for one lift. That’s a real tradeoff, not a myth, and we’d rather talk through it honestly than sell you the wrong machine. But if the primary job is driveline removal, the answer has been the same for forty years.

Myth Two: All Automotive Two Post Lifts Hold Value Equally

They do not, and the gap is bigger than most owners expect. When we get called to relocate or buy out equipment from a closing shop, the units that move quickly at strong numbers are the recognizable commercial brands with parts still in production — Rotary, Challenger, and the older Mohawk two-post units that show up occasionally. Those carry a name a buyer can look up, a serial plate that ties to a parts diagram, and a service network. The units that sit are the off-brand imports that came through a big-box channel eight years ago, where nobody can source a carriage slider or a matching cable set anymore.

We watched a shop east of Cedar Rapids try to sell two units from the same bay. One was a fifteen-year-old commercial-grade unit that had been maintained; it sold in under two weeks for roughly half of what a comparable new one costs. The other was a six-year-old budget import with no legible data plate, and it eventually went for scrap-adjacent money. Age wasn’t the variable. Parts availability and brand recognition were. When you’re comparing automotive two post lifts at purchase time, factor in what the thing will be worth in year twelve, because for most shops that’s a meaningful chunk of the total cost of ownership.

Myth Three: Taller Columns Always Mean More Usable Clearance

A caller from northern Iowa once told us he needed the tallest overhead unit we sold because his ceiling was high. He had a 139-inch maximum height to work with once he measured the actual door track and the sprinkler drops. The overhead crossbar on a tall two-post sits at the very top of the columns, and if that number exceeds your lowest obstruction, the lift physically cannot be installed regardless of how much room the middle of the shop has. Usable clearance is determined by rise height and the position of your ceiling obstructions, not by column height alone.

This is where clearfloor versus baseplate versus overhead actually matters. A baseplate model routes the equalization cables and hydraulic line through a floor plate between the columns, so there’s nothing overhead at all — perfect for shops with low ceilings or an existing beam in the wrong place. The tradeoff is a two-inch bump you drive over. Overhead models keep the floor clean but demand vertical space. Clearfloor units split the difference by running everything through the columns and an overhead bar that can be set higher. We measure three things on every site visit: lowest obstruction, door opening height, and slab thickness. Guessing at any of them is how installs get canceled.

Myth Four: Concrete Is Concrete

We’ve had customers tell us their floor is fine because it’s poured concrete, and then discover during the install that the slab is four and a half inches of thirty-year-old mix over gravel with no rebar. A typical 10,000 lb two-post requires a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers want more than that for higher capacities. Anchor bolts pull out of weak or thin slabs, and when a column starts to lean under load, you’re not talking about a repair — you’re talking about a car on the floor.

Testing is not complicated. Drill a small hole in the intended anchor location, measure depth to subgrade, and check for reinforcement. If the slab comes up short, the fix is a cutout and a fresh pad poured to spec, which typically runs in the low four figures per column area depending on your concrete contractor. That’s real money, but it’s a fraction of the liability. We’ve also seen shops where the floor was fine but heavily sloped for drainage; a two-post can tolerate a small amount of pitch with shimming, but past a certain point the carriages bind. Before you finalize any purchase, get the floor verified. It’s the single most common reason an install date slips in Iowa.

Myth Five: Used Is Always the Smart Buy

Used equipment can absolutely be the right call, and we help people find and inspect it. But the math has to be honest. A used unit with unknown cable age, worn carriage slide blocks, a leaking cylinder, and no ALI certification sticker can easily need a couple thousand dollars in parts and a full day of labor before it’s safe to put a car on. Cables in particular are consumables with a service life, and replacing a set on a two-post is a job most owners underestimate. Add a cylinder reseal or replacement and you’ve closed most of the gap to a new commercial unit with a warranty.

The used buys that work out well share a pattern. They come from a shop that closed rather than one that ran the equipment into the ground, they’re a brand with a live parts pipeline, and somebody knowledgeable inspected them before money changed hands. We check cable condition and swage integrity, arm restraint function, lock ladder wear, cylinder condition, and whether the columns were ever hit by a vehicle. If a used unit passes those checks and the price is right, buy it. If the seller can’t tell you the model number, walk. Roughly half the used automotive two post lifts we’re asked to look at fail one of those checks.

What Actually Drives Resale and Trade-In Value

When a shop in the Iowa City corridor calls us about upgrading, the first question is always what the old unit is worth. The honest answer depends on four things, in order of importance. First, brand and parts availability — can a buyer get a cable set, a cylinder, and lock components five years from now? Second, documented maintenance, which mostly means cables replaced on schedule and hydraulic fluid that isn’t milky. Third, capacity relative to what the market wants; 10,000 and 12,000 lb units move fastest because that covers most of what rolls into a general shop. Fourth, whether it’s still installed and demonstrable versus already disassembled in a corner.

We handle trade-in on new purchases when the numbers make sense for both sides, and we’re straightforward about it — sometimes the credit is meaningful and sometimes we tell people they’ll do better selling it locally themselves. Removal and transport are real costs, and a two-post that has to be unbolted, laid down, and hauled eats into whatever it’s worth. Measure the bay first — ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, door height, bay width, and slab thickness verified by drilling. Then decide overhead, clearfloor, or baseplate based on those measurements rather than on preference. Then pick capacity: 10,000 lb covers the overwhelming majority of passenger cars and light SUVs, 12,000 gives you margin for heavier German wagons and light trucks, and anything above that is for specific commercial needs. Only after all of that does brand and price enter the conversation.
