What Capacity a Quick-Lube Franchise Actually Needs

A quick-lube franchise sees mostly cars, half-ton pickups, and mid-size SUVs. Vehicle weights land in the 2,800 to 6,500 lb window with occasional 3/4-ton pickups pushing 7,500 lb. The volume is high – a busy Iowa Great Lakes location during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day) can run 45 to 65 vehicles per day across two bays.

For a quick-lube application, capacity is less of a constraint than cycle count. High-volume operations wear equipment through cycle stress, not weight stress. Electrical Circuit and Phase Requirements

Electrical is where a lot of quick-lube operators get surprised. Two-post lifts require dedicated electrical circuits, and the specific requirements depend on the power unit voltage and phase configuration.

Standard configurations on new automotive two post lifts: single-phase 208-230V, 30A dedicated circuit (most common in commercial buildings); three-phase 208-230V, 20A dedicated circuit (more efficient, faster lift cycle, requires three-phase service to the building); three-phase 460-480V, 15A dedicated circuit (industrial-grade, uncommon in quick-lube builds). For a new Iowa Great Lakes quick-lube build, we typically spec single-phase 208-230V 30A on each lift. That configuration is compatible with most commercial buildings and doesn’t require the utility to bring in three-phase service (which can add $8,000 to $25,000 to the building electrical if it’s not already there). Each lift needs its own dedicated 30A circuit, not shared. Two lifts = two circuits back to the panel. Options that quick-lube operations often add: air-line kit for impact use ($180 to $250 per lift), safety-line kit for extra manual redundancy ($120 per lift), extended-height column kit if the ceiling supports it ($350 to $500 per lift). Options usually skipped: drive-over ramps (faster in-out without them), swing-out alignment kit (quick-lube doesn’t run alignments). Challenger CL10 equivalents land within $200 of the Rotary pricing. Feature-for-feature, the two brands are functionally equivalent for quick-lube use, and either is fine. For a new-build quick-lube shop with fresh 6-inch 4,000 psi concrete, no additional concrete work needed. Anchoring is included in the install labor. We use factory-supplied wedge anchors torqued to manufacturer spec. Floor slope: we verify with laser level before install. New commercial builds are usually well within spec (1/4-inch or less across the column footprints). Retrofits sometimes have slope issues that require shimming ($150 to $300 in shims and additional labor). Total concrete-related cost on a new-build Iowa Great Lakes automotive two post lifts install: $0 to $300. On a retrofit with concrete concerns: $2,500 to $9,000 depending on scope.
