The two-post market splits roughly into two worlds, and understanding that split saves first-time buyers a lot of confusion. On the commercial side you have manufacturers that have been building for dealership and independent shop duty cycles for decades — Rotary out of Madison, Indiana, and Challenger out of Louisville. These are companies whose products live in Ford, GM, and Toyota service bays where a lift cycles thirty times a day for fifteen years. The engineering reflects that: heavier column steel, serviceable cylinders, and a documented parts catalog going back generations of models.

On the home and light-duty side, BendPak and Atlas dominate. These are legitimate products — we install them regularly for homeowners and small shops — but they are engineered for a different duty cycle and priced accordingly. A home garage that cycles a lift four times a week does not need dealership-grade steel, and paying for it is not automatically the smart move. Where people get burned is the third tier: the no-name imports that appear under a new brand name every few years. We have all seen the auction listings. The problem is not always the initial build quality; the problem is that when a latch spring breaks in year six, the importer is gone and there is no drawing, no part number, and no supplier. The Parts Pipeline Is the Whole Ballgame

Here is what actually breaks on a two-post over twenty years, roughly in order of frequency: equalizer cables, latch and lock assemblies, arm restraint gears, cylinder seals, power unit motors, and slider blocks. None of that is exotic. All of it is consumable.

When you buy from a manufacturer with a real parts pipeline, every one of those items has a number, a price, and a shelf somewhere. A cable for a common Rotary or Challenger column ships from stock and installs in an afternoon. When you buy from an orphan brand, the same failure becomes a fabrication project. We have measured, spec’d, and had cables swaged for customers whose lifts had no supplier left, and it works, but it costs more than the original cable and takes two weeks instead of two days. That math is why we tell first-time buyers to weight the parts question heavily. Sizing for Brake Work Specifically

Brake service is one of the friendliest jobs to do on automotive two post lifts, and it drives a couple of specific setup choices. The vehicle is off the ground with all four wheels free, which means you can spin a rotor, check runout, and pull a caliper without fighting a drive-on platform or a rolling jack. That is the core argument for two-post over four-post for anyone whose main use case is brakes.

What you want is enough rise to get the hubs at a comfortable working height. For most people that is somewhere around chest to shoulder level with the tire off, which on a typical sedan means 60 to 68 inches of lift height. Full rise on a 10,000 lb column is usually in the low 70s, so you have margin. The second thing that matters is arm geometry. Symmetric arms of equal length put the vehicle centered between the columns, which is great for trucks but means the door hits the column on a car. Asymmetric arms — shorter fronts, longer rears, columns rotated — set the car back so the door opens between the posts. If you are doing brake jobs, you are getting in and out of that car repeatedly to pump pedals and check the parking brake, and asymmetric will make you happier. The third item is arm pad height. Low-profile pads matter if anything in your fleet sits low. Ceiling Height, Doors, and the Great Lakes Pole Barn

A lot of buildings in northwest Iowa are pole barns with 12- or 14-foot sidewalls, which is generous, but the header over the overhead door and the truss bottom chord are what actually limit you. Measure the lowest obstruction in the bay where the lift will go, not the peak of the roof. Then subtract. On an overhead-beam design you need the beam plus a few inches of clearance above the tallest vehicle at full rise. On a baseplate or clearfloor design, the columns themselves are the tallest thing, so you gain that headroom back.

The buyer in the Great Lakes region had a 14-foot sidewall and a 12-foot door, so he had room for either style. We put him on an overhead model because he preferred a clean floor, and because his shop doubled as a place he rolled toolboxes and a floor jack around constantly. Someone with a 10-foot ceiling would go the other direction — baseplate, every time. A North Dakota customer we quoted had a hard 139-inch maximum height and could not do an overhead at all; baseplate was the only answer. It is worth noting that with automotive two post lifts, the height limit is not just about the lift, it is about what you plan to put on it. A lifted three-quarter-ton pickup at 78 inches tall, plus 68 inches of rise, plus a 6-inch overhead beam already puts you over 12 feet. Concrete, Anchors, and the Part People Skip

Every conversation about automotive two post lifts eventually lands on the slab, because the anchors are the only thing between a loaded lift and a very bad afternoon. Most 10,000 lb units call for a minimum of 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with the anchor holes at a safe distance from any expansion joint or slab edge.

Pole barn floors are the wildcard. Many are perfectly adequate. Many were poured by a crew working fast on a windy day and vary from 5 inches at the center to under 3 at the perimeter. We core test, and we recommend anyone installing a lift do the same before they commit to a location. If the concrete is short, the fix is straightforward: saw-cut and pour a reinforced pad under each column footprint, typically 12 inches deep, and let it cure a full month. It is not glamorous and it adds to the project, but it is a one-time expense against twenty-plus years of use. The other detail worth mentioning is heated floors. If your slab has PEX in it, we need to know before we drill — hitting a heat line means a wet floor and a repair inside the concrete. Customers sometimes volunteer this and sometimes forget. Ask yourself the question now. If there is any doubt, an infrared scan on a cold morning with the heat running will show you the tube layout clearly enough to lay out anchor points around it.

Install It Yourself or Have Us Do It?

Plenty of buyers want to handle the install themselves, and some genuinely should. If you have a forklift or a skid loader with forks, a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, and a helper who shows up, setting a two-post is within reach for a mechanically capable person. We have shipped units to customers who explicitly did not want install service and it worked out fine.

What we would insist on either way is a competent inspection before the first vehicle goes up. Columns plumb within spec, anchors torqued to the manufacturer’s number, both carriages at equal height, locks engaging simultaneously on both sides, cylinder bled with no air in the system, and the power unit wired to the correct voltage with the right breaker. Those are the six items that separate a safe lift from a hazard, and none of them are hard — they are just easy to skip when you are excited to use your new equipment. The other reason to at least talk to us is warranty. Some manufacturers of automotive two post lifts tie coverage to a documented professional install, and a self-install can void a portion of that. It varies by brand and by year. Ask before you decide. Pick asymmetric if you are doing brake work and getting in and out of the vehicle. Verify your concrete before you pick a location. Measure the lowest point in the ceiling, not the highest. And buy one tier of capacity above your heaviest vehicle, not three. He has been doing his own rotors and pads for a year now, and the only thing he has bought since is a set of arm pad pucks, which is exactly how this is supposed to go.
