Month 0: Site Survey and Electrical Scoping

Our first visit to the border shop happened in mid-February. Site survey covered concrete, ceiling, door swing, obstruction mapping, electrical panel capacity, and air availability. The shop had a 400-amp three-phase service feeding two subpanels, one of which was in the section where the new lift would go. Ceiling was a generous 16 feet under exposed truss chords, no cranes overhead, no ductwork over the lift zone.

Electrical circuit and phase scoping was the interesting part. The shop had three-phase power, which meant we had the option of quoting a three-phase version of the lift. Three-phase automotive two post lifts pull slightly less amperage per leg and can be marginally faster on the up-cycle, but the price premium over a single-phase version is about $400 and the practical difference in a light-duty inspection bay is negligible. We recommended single-phase off the existing 220V tap that was already run to the section, saving the customer $400 in equipment and about $600 in electrical work for a new three-phase pull. The single-phase circuit needed a 30-amp double-pole breaker in the existing subpanel and a short 10-gauge run to a NEMA 6-30 receptacle. Total electrical work by the shop’s regular electrician came in at $290 including permit. Automotive two post lifts do not need fancy power — they need a correctly sized single-phase circuit installed to code, which any commercial electrician can handle in a morning.

Month 1: Delivery and Install

Delivery from Ames to the border location happened in mid-March on a consolidated freight run with two other customer deliveries in the corridor. The lift arrived in three crates — two columns plus a hardware and arm kit — and off-loaded onto the shop floor in about 45 minutes with a shop forklift. Install by our two-tech crew took a single working day, arriving at 8 a.m. and wrapping post-install testing by 4:30 p.m.

Anchor drilling was the slowest part of the install, as it usually is. The concrete was 5 inches thick with visible mesh at the drill depth, which is well above the anchor minimum, and torque verification passed on every anchor at 90 foot-pounds. Cable tension was set to spec and measured with a tension gauge. Cylinder bleed took about 40 minutes across both columns, and the first cycle of the lift under an empty load ran smooth without a chatter or a hesitation. First cycle under actual vehicle load happened with the customer’s shop pickup as a test article. Everything moved as expected and the post-install checklist got signed off before dinner. Month 2-3: Break-In and First Real Work

Cylinders bleed off any remaining trapped air. Anchor bolts settle a fraction of a millimeter into the concrete. All of this is normal and none of it is a problem if the lift is checked at the 30-day and 90-day mark.

We scheduled a 30-day follow-up visit where the crew re-torqued the anchors (all held spec), re-measured cable tension (one cable had settled slightly and was retensioned), and cycled the lift under maximum test load to verify hydraulic behavior. During months two and three the shop began running annual state inspections on passenger cars and light trucks, cycling the lift about 15 to 20 times a day. Month 4-6: Ramp-Up to Full Inspection Volume

By month four the marketing effort behind the new inspection service had matured and the shop was running 25 to 35 vehicles a day through the two-post bay. That put the lift at roughly 700 to 900 cycles a month, well within the manufacturer duty rating but toward the higher end of what a light-duty inspection bay typically sees. Cable and cylinder wear indicators remained at baseline. Latch engagement stayed clean and consistent through the ramp.

One small issue surfaced in month five: an air-line fitting at the safety-release solenoid began weeping slightly, which caused the release cycle to feel slower on some cycles. The shop noticed it during a normal service morning and called our warehouse. We had a replacement fitting on a next-day truck and the shop’s own tech swapped it in about 15 minutes with a wrench. Total downtime: zero, since the manual pull-cable release still worked during the interim. Purchase-to-payback timeline for the lift itself was about 8 weeks of incremental margin. Everything after that was pure return on invested capital.

The operator has since called us about adding a second two-post lift to a companion bay to double the inspection throughput. That expansion quote is in progress and will land at a slightly lower total than the first because the electrical run can piggyback on the existing subpanel and the air line is already in the ceiling.
