Nobody warns you about the freight. A third-generation family garage in Marion called us last spring about automotive two post lifts because the shop’s original hoist had finally given up mid-differential-fluid service, and the grandson running the place had already picked out a replacement online. What he hadn’t priced out was how a 2,400-pound crated column set was going to come off a 53-foot dry van in a gravel side lot with one 5,000 lb warehouse forklift and no dock. We drove over from Ames, walked the approach, measured the door, and rerouted the delivery. The lift itself was the easy part. Getting it from the truck to the bay floor without bending a column or hurting somebody was the actual project, and that is what this article is about.

What actually shows up on the truck
A 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post ships as two or three pieces. The columns usually travel banded together on a wood skid, roughly 116 to 124 inches long, 30 to 36 inches wide, and 24 to 30 inches tall depending on brand. That bundle alone runs 1,400 to 1,800 pounds. The arms, carriages, overhead beam, power unit, hardware box, and hydraulic hoses come as a second pallet, typically 48 by 48 inches and 600 to 900 pounds. Baseplate models drop the overhead beam and add a floor channel and hose covers, which changes the pallet mix but not the total much.
That geometry matters more than the weight. A 10-foot skid does not swing through a standard 9-foot overhead door on a forklift with the mast up. It does not fit down a 42-inch shop aisle. And it will not go around the corner into the back bay of most older Marion buildings without either standing it up or breaking the band and moving columns one at a time. We tell every customer buying automotive two post lifts to sketch the path from the truck’s tailgate to the final anchor location before the order goes in, including every door, post, and floor drain along the way. Ten minutes of measuring saves a rescheduled delivery, and rescheduled deliveries on lift freight are not cheap.
Curbside versus liftgate versus dock: pick before you order
Most freight carriers quote a lift hoist as standard LTL curbside delivery. That means the driver stops at the nearest safe point, opens the doors, and expects you to unload. He is not obligated to help, and most drivers won’t touch a 1,600 lb skid. If you have a dock, this is a non-issue. If you have a forklift rated for the load with the forks long enough to get under a 10-foot skid without tipping it, also a non-issue. Everybody else needs to make a decision at order time, not the morning the truck shows up.
Liftgate service exists but it has a hard ceiling. Most liftgates top out around 2,500 to 3,000 pounds and the platform is about 80 by 96 inches — meaning a 10-foot column skid overhangs and becomes unstable. We have seen a gate buckle under an unbalanced load. For automotive two post lifts, our standard advice in eastern Iowa is either arrange a rough-terrain forklift or telehandler for the delivery window, or let us handle delivery on our own truck with our own equipment. The Marion garage went the second route. Their 5,000 lb warehouse forklift had 42-inch forks, which was fine on paper and dangerous in practice with a load that long on a gravel apron.
Forklift capacity is not the number on the data plate
This is the part that puts people in trouble. A forklift rated at 5,000 pounds is rated at 5,000 pounds at a 24-inch load center with the mast vertical and the forks low. Extend that load center out to 36 or 48 inches because your forks are only halfway under a 10-foot skid, and effective capacity drops fast — often 30 to 40 percent. Tilt the mast forward on soft ground and you lose more. A 1,700 lb column bundle on a machine rated 5,000 sounds like nothing until the rear wheels come up.
The fix is straightforward. Use fork extensions to get at least 60 percent of the skid length supported, keep the load within four to six inches of the ground while traveling, and never travel across a slope with the load high. If the surface is gravel, put down plywood or steel plate at the transfer point. On the Marion job we brought a set of 8-foot extensions and did the transfer on plywood, then walked the skid inside at low mast and set it on the shop floor next to the anchor layout. Twenty minutes, no drama. Contrast that with a shop we helped in Cedar Rapids that tried it with bare 42-inch forks and put a two-inch dent in a column flange — a cosmetic issue on paper, a warranty conversation in reality.
Marion buildings, real dimensions, and the differential-fluid problem
The Marion shop is a 1960s block building, 36 by 60, with a true 12-foot 4-inch ceiling at the low point of the joists and a 10-foot overhead door. That rules out most clearfloor overhead two-post models, which want 12 feet minimum and are happier at 12 feet 6 inches or better once you account for the crossbeam and the shutoff bar. What it does allow is a baseplate design or a low-ceiling overhead variant with a shortened column, both of which we stock. Baseplate models also solve their second problem: they run trucks in and out constantly and did not want anything overhead that a raised topper or ladder rack could catch.
Their bread-and-butter work is fluid service — differential fluid, transfer case, transmission drain-and-fill on farm trucks that come in caked with dust. That work is all done from underneath with a drain pan and a torque wrench, which is exactly what automotive two post lifts are built for. Full undercarriage access, nothing in the way of the diff cover, and the ability to get the vehicle to a comfortable working height instead of crouching under a 4-post runway. We set their columns at a 12-foot 2-inch drive-through width with the power unit on the left column, which kept the hose route out of the walking path between the two bays.
Concrete, anchors, and what we verify before the truck rolls
Freight logistics get all the attention, but the concrete decides whether the installation happens at all. Standard requirement for a 10,000 lb two-post is 4 inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers want 4.25 inches with a 6-inch preference for 12,000 lb and up. Cure time needs to be at least 28 days. We core-test or hammer-drill a pilot hole in a few spots before we ever unload, because finding out the slab is 3 inches over a gravel base after the lift is standing in the bay is a bad afternoon for everybody.
In Marion the original 1960s slab was a genuine 6 inches in the bay area — old buildings sometimes surprise you in a good way — but the pour near the door was thinner and had a control joint running exactly where a column wanted to sit. We shifted the whole layout 14 inches back. Anchors need a minimum distance from any joint, crack, or slab edge; most specs call for 6 inches minimum and we prefer 12. If the slab does not qualify, the answer is a cut-and-pour pad, typically 4 by 4 feet by 8 to 12 inches deep under each column, doweled into the existing slab. That adds a week and a modest cost, and it is far cheaper than the alternative. Scheduling the delivery window so you are not paying storage
Freight carriers give you a delivery window, not an appointment, unless you pay for one. On a standard LTL move from a Midwest distribution point to eastern Iowa, expect three to six business days in transit and a four-hour window on delivery day. If nobody is there with equipment, the shipment goes back to the terminal and you start paying redelivery and storage fees that can run into the hundreds per day. We have picked up more than one lift from a Cedar Rapids terminal because a shop owner had a family emergency on delivery day.
Our recommendation for anyone ordering automotive two post lifts is to build a two-day buffer into your plan. Have the unloading equipment on site the day before the window opens, not the morning of. Have two people available — one to spot, one to run the machine. Clear the receiving path and the final set location completely, including moving any customer vehicles out of the bay. If you are coordinating an electrician for the power unit circuit, schedule them for two days after delivery, not the same day. And inspect the crate for damage before signing the bill of lading. Note anything on the delivery receipt, take photos, and call us. A noted exception is a warranty claim; an unnoted one is your problem.
Why we usually just bring it ourselves
After enough of these, we started delivering most Iowa orders on our own trucks with our own forklift and rigging. It costs a little more than raw LTL freight in some cases and less in others once you add liftgate fees, redelivery risk, and the equipment rental a shop would otherwise need. More importantly, the same crew that unloads it installs it, so there is no handoff and nobody arguing about who dented what. We show up with the columns, the hardware, the anchors, a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, and a laser level, and the lift is running the same day in most single-bay installs.
The Marion garage was a one-day job start to finish: truck at 7:30, columns set and plumbed by 11, anchors torqued and hydraulics bled by 2, load-tested and paperwork signed by 3:30. That is what good freight planning buys you.
