A fleet supervisor for a small municipality in northern Missouri called us last winter with a problem that comes up more often than you would think: he had four seasonal vehicles — two mowers on trailers, a parade truck, and a backup pickup — eating floor space in a shop that also needed to service the plow fleet. He wanted to know whether automotive two post lifts could double as a maintenance station nine months of the year and a vertical parking solution the other three. The honest answer is nuanced, and it starts with two measurements almost nobody takes before they order: ceiling height at the actual lift location, and how the overhead door swings when it opens. Measure the Ceiling Where the Lift Goes, Not Where It’s Tallest

Most municipal shops in northern Missouri were built in stages. The original bay might have fourteen feet of clear height, but the addition put on in the nineties has a lower truss, and the sprinkler main runs right through the middle of the space you were planning to use. We ask every caller to walk out with a tape measure and take the height at four corners of the intended footprint, then at the lowest obstruction anywhere in the vehicle’s travel path. That number — not the peak of the roof — is what determines your options.

An overhead-style two post lift needs roughly twelve feet of clear height for a standard 10,000 lb model, and the overhead beam itself sits above the raised vehicle. If you are storing a full-size pickup on the lift through the winter, you need the truck’s height plus the arm and carriage height plus a margin, and then the beam above all of it. When the ceiling will not cooperate, a baseplate or floorplate design moves the equalization cables into a channel across the floor and drops the required clearance considerably. We have installed baseplate units under eleven-foot ceilings without drama. The trade-off is a low bar you drive over, which matters if you also roll floor jacks and transmission jacks through that bay all day. Neither answer is universally right — it depends on which inconvenience you can live with.

Door Swing Is the Detail That Ruins Installations

Ceiling height gets discussed. Door swing almost never does, and it has bitten more shops than any other measurement. A standard sectional overhead door does not just go up — the panels track back along the ceiling on horizontal rails, and the top panel plus the opener rail can intrude two feet or more into the room, at exactly the height where an overhead crossbeam wants to live. We have shown up to installs where the customer had done everything right on paper and the door literally could not open with the lift standing where it was chalked out.

For a seasonal storage application this matters double, because the whole point is that the vehicle sits on the lift for months while the door keeps operating for other traffic. Before we set anchors, we open the door fully and mark where the lowest hardware sits. If the intrusion conflicts, there are usually three fixes: shift the lift columns further into the bay, convert the door to a high-lift or jackshaft track that pulls the panels nearly vertical before turning, or go baseplate and eliminate the overhead beam entirely. The northern Missouri shop we mentioned went with a jackshaft conversion on one door, which cost less than moving the lift into a bay with worse concrete. That is the kind of trade-off automotive two post lifts force you to think through before ordering rather than after.

Concrete Depth and Anchor Integrity for Long-Term Loads

Storing a vehicle overhead for ninety days is a different structural conversation than lifting it for a two-hour brake job. The anchors carry a sustained overturning load, and the concrete under those columns needs to be honest about what it can hold. Manufacturers generally specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many models ask for more when you get above 12,000 lb capacity. We have cored slabs in farm shops and municipal garages across the region and found everything from a beautiful six-inch pour to three and a quarter inches over gravel with a crack running through it.

If your slab does not measure up, the fix is not exotic. We cut out a section under each column and pour a footing pad — typically a four-foot-square block at the depth the manufacturer calls out, tied in with rebar and given a proper cure before anything gets anchored. It adds a week and a modest cost, and it is dramatically cheaper than the alternative. A caller from a shop north of the Iowa line once told us his concrete was “about five inches, maybe less.” That phrase should always trigger a core sample. When you are asking automotive two post lifts to hold a truck all winter, guessing is not a plan. We also check for post-tension cables and radiant heat tubing before drilling — hitting either one turns a routine install into an expensive repair.

Capacity Sizing for Mixed Municipal Fleets

Fleet shops rarely service one class of vehicle. A typical small-city garage in northern Missouri has half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, a couple of sedans or SUVs for administration, a small dump truck, and whatever the parks department is running that year. We had a fleet manager tell us on a call that he was “pretty sure we have a 14,000 and definitely a 10,000, I think we kind of have everything” — which is genuinely how most fleet inventories work after a decade of piecemeal purchases.

Our guidance is to size for the heaviest vehicle you will actually put on the equipment, then add margin, then look at the arm geometry. A 10,000 lb unit handles the vast majority of light-duty fleet work comfortably. Step up to 12,000 or 15,000 lb when three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks with service bodies are in the rotation, because the weight is not just higher, it is distributed further back and the arms need reach. For heavier equipment, the conversation moves toward four-post or mobile column territory. Safety Practices Specific to Long-Term Vehicle Storage on Automotive Two Post Lifts

Here is where we push back on customers, gently but firmly. Automotive two post lifts are engineered for service work, not indefinite storage. They hold a vehicle by four contact pads under frame or pinch-weld points, and the load path is narrow. Leaving a truck up for a season is not automatically unsafe, but it demands discipline that a two-hour lift job does not.

The non-negotiables: the vehicle rests on the mechanical safety locks, never on hydraulic pressure alone. You verify all four locks are engaged and audibly clicked at the same lock position, not three at one notch and one at the next. The arm restraints are locked. Nobody moves anything under the vehicle without checking the pads have not shifted. And you inspect monthly — walk out, look at the pads, look at the arms, look for any hydraulic weep at the cylinder or fittings, and cycle the lift down and back up at least quarterly so seals and cables do not take a set. If your real goal is parking two vehicles in one footprint long-term, a four-post lift is the honest answer, because it supports the vehicle on its own tires across four runways and is designed for exactly that duty. Bay Layout, Column Spacing, and Working Around Stored Vehicles

Once a vehicle parks on a lift for the season, that bay’s traffic pattern changes. You lose the ability to walk straight through, and anything you stage underneath has a ceiling. We lay out municipal shops with that in mind — putting the storage-duty lift on the end bay rather than the middle, keeping the column spacing wide enough that a service body pickup clears without a spotter, and making sure the power unit and controls sit where an operator can see the full vehicle while raising it.

Standard column spacing runs around eleven to twelve feet between posts on most light-duty models, with wider options available. Symmetric configurations center the vehicle between the posts and give better balance for trucks; asymmetric setups rotate the vehicle back so the doors clear the columns, which matters if you are getting in and out of the cab regularly. For a stored vehicle you rarely enter, symmetric is usually the better mechanical choice. Also plan your compressed air drops and electrical before the columns go in — running conduit around a lift after the fact is ugly and expensive. Most units want a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit, and we size the breaker to the power unit’s nameplate, not to a guess. Getting the layout right the first time is most of what separates a shop that likes its equipment from one that fights it every day.
