That question sounds simple until you price the whole job — the column set, the freight, the anchors, the concrete work, the electrical drop, the install labor, and the annual inspection. Why Wheel Bearing Work Changes the Spec

Wheel bearing service is one of the hardest jobs you can ask a lift to do, and it has almost nothing to do with the number stamped on the capacity plate. It is about time under load and about how the vehicle sits. A bearing job on a medium-duty truck means the vehicle is in the air for two to five hours with a hub pulled, a torch nearby, a slide hammer swinging, and a tech leaning into the wheel end with real force. The lift is not just holding weight — it is absorbing lateral shock while one corner is missing its wheel and the load distribution has quietly shifted forward or rearward of where you set the arms.

That reality pushes the spec in specific directions. We steer truck shops toward higher-capacity columns than the raw math requires, because a 14,000 lb truck loaded with a service body and tools is not a 14,000 lb truck. We also push for symmetric or true asymmetric arm sets with long front reach, because you need to place pads on frame rails, not pinch welds. And we look hard at lock spacing — closely spaced mechanical locks mean you can set the truck at the exact working height for the hub, not four inches high or six inches low. Those three details separate a lift that makes bearing work fast from one that makes it miserable.

The Honest Case for Buying Used

We sell new equipment and we also service a huge population of used equipment, so we have no reason to talk you out of a good used buy. There are genuinely good used lifts on the market, and in the Quad Cities specifically we see them come loose when dealerships remodel or when a fleet shop consolidates. A ten-year-old Rotary SPO-series column set that was maintained, greased, and inspected can have another fifteen years in it. The structural steel does not wear out. What wears out are cables, sheaves, lock dogs, hoses, seals, and the power unit — and every one of those is a replaceable part we stock.

The catch is that used pricing is only attractive if you price the refurbishment honestly at the same time. A used set of automotive two post lifts that looks like a bargain at a third of new money often needs a cable set, a lock rebuild, a cylinder reseal or replacement, new arm pads, new restraints, and a power unit. Add freight, add rigging to get it out of the seller’s building, add install at your building, and add a first inspection. We have seen plenty of used deals land within fifteen percent of a new lift once the whole list is added up — and at that point you gave up the warranty, the current ANSI/ALI certification, and the parts availability that comes with a current production model. Sometimes used still wins. You just have to do the arithmetic before you tow it home.

Where New Automotive Two Post Lifts Earn the Premium

New equipment buys you three things a used column set generally cannot: current certification, a documented parts pipeline, and predictable downtime. The certification matters more than shop owners expect. If you do any fleet, municipal, or dealer-warranty work, or if your insurance carrier walks the building, an ALI-certified lift with a legible capacity label and a current inspection tag ends the conversation. An uncertified thirty-year-old lift with a painted-over data plate starts one.

The parts pipeline is the part we feel every week. When a current-production Rotary or Challenger column needs a lock dog, a carriage sheave, or a power unit, we pull it off the shelf or have it in two days, and your bay is down for an afternoon. When an orphaned import lift from a brand that left the market needs the same part, we are fabricating, cross-referencing, or telling you the lift is finished. For a truck shop where one bay represents real daily revenue, that difference dwarfs the purchase price gap. The Real Cost Stack: Lift, Freight, Concrete, Install

Here is how we build a number for a truck shop, in tiers rather than exact prices. The lift itself is the smallest surprise. A quality 12,000 to 15,000 lb two-post column set from a top-tier brand lands in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on capacity, arm configuration, and clearfloor versus overhead design. Freight on a two-post is meaningful because columns are long and heavy — budget several hundred to over a thousand depending on your distance from the terminal and whether you have a dock or need liftgate service.

Concrete is where budgets break. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI cured concrete for a 10,000 lb unit, and heavier columns want more — often six inches or a poured pad. We test slabs constantly and we find four-inch nominal pours that measure three and a quarter over gravel. If your slab does not qualify, you are cutting, excavating, and pouring pads, and that is a four-figure line item plus a cure wait. Then comes electrical: a dedicated circuit at the right voltage and phase for your power unit, run by a licensed electrician. Install labor for a professionally anchored, plumbed, shimmed, and load-tested two-post typically runs a four-figure number, and it includes the things people skip on DIY installs — torque-verified anchors, column plumb inside spec, synchronized locks, and a documented load test. Add a first-year ALI inspection and you have your real number.

Overhead or Baseplate in a Truck Bay

Every two-post buyer eventually hits this fork, and truck shops hit it hardest. Overhead configurations put the equalizer cables and hoses in a beam across the top, which keeps the floor completely clear — a real advantage when you are rolling transmission jacks, bearing presses, and creepers around under a chassis all day. The tradeoff is that the beam eats ceiling height and sets a hard limit on how tall a vehicle you can bring up.

Baseplate configurations run everything through a low channel on the floor, so your ceiling is unobstructed and you can raise a tall van or box truck to full lift height. The tradeoff is a small ramp in the middle of the bay that every rolling toolbox has to cross. We had a Quad Cities area shop with a nominal 14-foot ceiling that turned out to have a 12-foot 10-inch clear height under a duct run — that discovery, made with a tape measure on the first visit, moved them from overhead to baseplate and saved them from a lift they could never have used at full extension. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the actual lift footprint, not to the peak of the roof. Then measure your door height, because you have to get the truck into the bay before the lift matters. For most heavy-duty truck applications we lean baseplate, and among automotive two post lifts that is the configuration we install most often in tall-vehicle bays.

Anchoring, Slab Testing, and Load Verification

The anchoring step is where we see the most dangerous corner-cutting in the field, and it is also the least expensive step to do right. A two-post lift transmits enormous overturning moment into a handful of wedge anchors. If those anchors are set in thin concrete, set too close to a control joint or slab edge, set in a hole that was not blown clean, or torqued by feel instead of by wrench, the lift can pass a visual inspection for years and then fail suddenly under load. We have pulled anchors out of shop floors with a slide hammer that should have required a hydraulic ram.

Our install process starts with coring or probing the slab to verify thickness and condition, then locating the columns clear of joints and edges by the manufacturer’s minimum distances. We drill to depth, blow the dust, set anchors, and torque to the printed spec with a calibrated wrench. Then we shim the columns plumb — not close to plumb, but inside the tolerance in the manual, because an out-of-plumb column loads its carriage rollers unevenly and eats them. Finally we run the lift through full travel unloaded, verify both carriages arrive at the same height, verify every lock engages and releases together, and load-test with a real vehicle. That documentation goes in your file and it is the first thing an inspector or insurance adjuster asks for. Keeping the Lift Alive in a Heavy-Duty Bay

A truck shop is the harshest environment a two-post lives in. You have chassis grease, road salt from Iowa and Illinois winters, torch slag, and cutting oil hitting the columns and cables daily. Under those conditions, maintenance is not optional and the intervals are shorter than the manual’s residential-style suggestions. We tell heavy-duty shops to walk the lift weekly: eyes on the cables at the sheaves for broken strands or flat spots, eyes on the hoses for weeping, eyes on the arm restraint gears for missing teeth, and a listen at the power unit for cavitation.

Monthly, grease the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivots, check the fluid level, and cycle every lock individually to confirm the dogs drop and reset crisply. Annually, get an ALI-certified inspection — required by OSHA-referenced practice for commercial shops and cheap relative to what a failure costs. The two parts that end up costing shops the most are the ones they ignore longest: equalizer cables and lock dogs. A cable set is an affordable, planned expense; a snapped cable during a bearing job is a bent arm, a damaged truck, and a scared technician.
