Automotive two post lifts are the single piece of equipment that turns a mobile tire and brake operation into a real shop, and we watched that happen firsthand this past year with a mechanic outside Sioux City who had been working out of a cargo van for six years. He called us in the spring with a signed lease on a two-bay building, a floor jack collection he was tired of, and a very specific complaint: he was losing money on rotations because every set took him twice as long on the ground as it would in the air. We drove up, measured the slab, and laid out the bays around how he actually works — not around a catalog page. Here is what we found and what we installed.

Why a Mobile Tire Operation Outgrows the Floor Jack

A mobile guy learns speed on the ground because he has no choice. Jack, jack stands, wheel off, torque by hand, repeat four times, and then do it again at the next driveway. It works, and plenty of good techs make a living that way, but the math turns against you the moment you have a building with rent attached. Our Sioux City customer was averaging roughly 45 minutes on a four-wheel rotation with an inspection, and about half of that was lifting and lowering. In the air on a proper lift, the same job runs 15 to 18 minutes with a better inspection because he can actually see the inner tie rod ends and the rear brake hardware without crawling.

That is the argument for automotive two post lifts in a tire-focused bay: unobstructed access to all four corners at once, and wheels at chest height instead of ankle height. A four-post is fine for storage and quick service, but the runways sit under the tires, which is exactly where a tire guy needs open air. A mid-rise scissor gets the car up but boxes in the rocker area and limits how high you can go for suspension work. For a shop whose bread and butter is rotations, mount-and-balance, brake jobs, and the occasional strut, two columns and four swing arms is the right tool. He came to that conclusion himself once we walked him through a demo bay.

Measuring the Slab Before Anything Else

The first thing we did on site was pull out the hammer drill and the tape. Concrete is where most lift plans die, and it dies quietly — nobody finds out until anchors spin in the hole. His building was put up in the late 1990s as a light warehouse, which meant the slab was rated for pallet racking and forklift traffic, not for point loads at column bases. We cored two test spots and found just under five inches of reasonably clean concrete over compacted fill, with no rebar we could locate and no visible cracking near the proposed column locations.

Five inches is a common number and a frustrating one. Most manufacturers of automotive two post lifts specify a minimum of four to four and a quarter inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb clearfloor model, so five inches technically clears the bar — but “technically clears” is not how we like to sign our name to an installation. We recommended pouring two footings, roughly four feet by four feet by twelve inches deep, tied with rebar and cut into the existing slab at each column. That added a day of saw-cutting and a cure window, and it removed the question permanently. He has since had a dually pickup on that lift more times than either of us expected, and the anchors have not moved.

Bay Spacing and the Door You Have to Live With

His building had a 14-foot overhead door on the left bay and a 12-foot on the right, with a 13-foot 6-inch ceiling under the trusses. That ceiling is the number that decides clearfloor versus baseplate more often than anything else. A clearfloor two-post needs the overhead crossbar and its shutoff bar to fit above the tallest vehicle you plan to lift, and on a 13-foot 6-inch ceiling you have room for a standard-height clearfloor column but not much margin if you want to raise a tall van to full height.

We put a clearfloor unit in the left bay under the taller door and set the columns 12 feet 2 inches apart on center, which gave him a clean drive-through and enough side clearance to roll a tire cart between the column and the wall. On the right, where the ceiling drops slightly under a duct run, we left space for a future baseplate model — the floor plate is a trip hazard you learn to walk around, but it buys you real headroom. The other detail nobody thinks about: we oriented both bays so the power unit sits on the same side, so he only ran one electrical drop and one air line. Small thing, saved him a few hundred in electrical.

Arm Configuration for Tire and Wheel Work

Arm geometry is where automotive two post lifts stop being interchangeable. He works on everything from Civics to F-250s, and a symmetric lift with four equal-length arms would have put the front arms in a bad spot on short-wheelbase cars while making it awkward to open doors on longer trucks. We specified an asymmetric configuration with short front arms and longer three-stage rears, which shifts the vehicle back in the bay and lets doors swing clear of the columns.

We also spent real money on low-profile arm pads and a set of stackable adapters. Low-profile matters more than people expect if you take in any lowered cars, and in northwest Iowa you get more of those than you would guess — every small town has two or three guys with an air-ride truck. The adapter kit lives in a rack he welded to the driver-side column, which keeps them off the floor and out of the drain. One more workflow note that came out of watching him work: we mounted his torque sticks and impact hose on a reel above the lift centerline, so he is not dragging air hose across the bay every time he moves from front to rear. That kind of detail is the difference between a lift that works and a lift you fight.

Electrical, Air, and What the Building Actually Needed

Power units on most 10,000 and 12,000 lb models run 208-230V single phase, and the standard 20-amp dedicated circuit is not optional. His panel had capacity but no free two-pole breaker, so an electrician added one and ran conduit overhead to a disconnect on the column. Total electrical work came in at a few hundred dollars — well under what he had braced for. If you are quoting a lift, get an electrician to look at your panel before you sign anything, because a panel upgrade can cost more than the lift installation itself.

Air matters too. Two-post lifts use shop air for the lock release on most designs, and if your compressor is undersized or your line is too small, the locks release lazily and you develop bad habits. He had a 60-gallon single-stage compressor, which is fine for lock release and impacts but marginal for a tire machine and balancer running at the same time. We suggested he plumb a half-inch loop with drops rather than running one long branch, and he did. Six months in, he told us the loop was the best advice he got out of the whole project — pressure at the far corner of the shop no longer sags when the compressor cycles.

What the Sioux City Install Cost, Roughly

People want numbers, so here is the honest shape of it without pretending your building is his. A quality 10,000 lb clearfloor two-post from a name brand lands in the low-to-mid four figures for the lift itself, with 12,000 lb models and premium configurations stepping up from there. Professional installation with anchors, shimming, leveling, cable tensioning, and a load test typically runs several hundred to around a thousand depending on drive time and how cooperative the slab is.

His footings added the largest single surprise — concrete work, saw-cutting, and disposal ran roughly comparable to the installation labor itself. Electrical was a few hundred. Freight from our warehouse to the Sioux City area was modest because we were already running that direction. All in, he was in the mid five figures for two bays’ worth of equipment including a tire machine and balancer, and he told us in the fall that he had paid the lift off in about five months of rotations and brake jobs. That is not a promise; it is what happened for a guy who already had a customer list. If you are starting from zero, plan on longer. Either way, automotive two post lifts are one of the few shop purchases that reliably shorten every job you do.

Inspection, Maintenance, and Not Getting Complacent

Once the lift is in, the failure mode is neglect. We handed him a laminated one-page routine and told him to tape it inside the electrical box: check cable tension monthly, grease the carriage slides and arm pivots quarterly, look at the anchor bolts for movement, cycle the locks and listen for both to engage, and check the hydraulic fluid level every few months. Equalization cables stretch during the first year of use — that is normal, not a defect — and a lift that goes up crooked is almost always a tension issue, not a cylinder issue.

We also put him on an annual inspection schedule, which we do for most of our commercial accounts across Iowa. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for a qualified annual inspection, and if you ever have an incident, an inspection record is the difference between a conversation and a lawsuit. We check arm restraints, lock engagement at every position, cable and sheave condition, hose routing, anchor torque, and overall structural condition, and we replace wear parts on the spot when we have them on the truck.
