He was already running a state inspection program alongside oil service, and every vehicle that came in for an inspection meant a tech on a creeper with a flashlight, checking exhaust hangers and brake lines from the floor. He knew he was losing twenty minutes per car. What he didn’t know was how the total number breaks down: how much is the lift, how much is freight, how much is the installer, and what a lender actually wants to see before signing. Why an Inspection Bay Justifies the Lift Faster Than a Lube Bay

A quick-lube pit does a fine job of moving oil changes. What it does poorly is anything that requires a tech to see and touch the underside of a vehicle at a comfortable working height — and that is exactly what an annual state inspection is. Brake line corrosion, ball joint play, exhaust integrity, tie rod end slop, tire sidewall condition, parking brake function. In a pit or on the floor, those checks take a flashlight and a lot of neck strain. On a lift at chest height, they take a fraction of the time and the tech actually catches things instead of guessing.

The southeast Iowa operator we worked with was averaging roughly 18 inspections a week between two locations, and he tracked his own numbers before he called us. His techs were spending close to 45 minutes per inspection when you counted the write-up. He believed he could get that under 25. Even at conservative labor recovery, that gap paid the monthly note on the equipment inside the first year and freed up bay time he’d been giving away. That’s the math that makes a purchase easy to defend to a lender or a franchise district manager. The lift isn’t a comfort upgrade — it’s throughput. We tell customers to build the case that way because it holds up under scrutiny, and because it keeps the conversation off of price alone and onto what the bay actually produces per hour.

Line One: The Lift Itself, and What Capacity Class Costs

Capacity is the biggest single driver of the equipment number. For a shop seeing passenger cars, crossovers, half-ton pickups and the occasional three-quarter-ton work truck, a 10,000 lb clearfloor model is the workhorse and sits at the bottom of the price band. Step up to 12,000 lb and you gain margin for loaded three-quarter-tons and longer wheelbases; that typically runs a modest tier above the 10K. At 15,000 to 18,000 lb you’re into a different class of column, carriage and cable, and the price steps up substantially — usually well more than double the entry 10K number.

Within a capacity class, configuration matters. Asymmetric columns with rotated posts let you open car doors without denting them, which is the right call for a shop that mostly sees sedans and crossovers. Symmetric works better if trucks dominate. Overhead versus baseplate is the other fork: overhead keeps the floor clean and is what most commercial shops want, while baseplate is the answer when ceiling height won’t allow the crossbar. We had a customer up in North Dakota who was capped at 139 inches of ceiling and had no choice but baseplate. On automotive two post lifts, that single decision changes both the model and the install labor, so we settle it before quoting anything.

Line Two: Freight, and Why It Surprises People

A two-post lift ships as a freight crate on a pallet, and it is heavy and awkward. Columns alone on a 12,000 lb unit run several hundred pounds each. Freight to southeast Iowa from a manufacturer’s distribution point is a real line item — enough that we quote it separately rather than burying it, because the number changes with your ZIP code, whether you have a dock, and whether you need liftgate service.

Here’s where shops get burned. A no-dock delivery to a rural or small-town address needs a liftgate truck, and if the driver shows up without one and nobody can unload, you eat a redelivery fee. The franchise operator we worked with had a forklift at his main location but not at the satellite store, so we scheduled liftgate on one and standard on the other. We also confirmed the door approach — one of his lots had a tight turn a 53-foot trailer couldn’t make, so we routed a smaller straight truck. None of that is glamorous, and none of it appears on a website product page, but it’s a couple hundred dollars either way. Line Three: Concrete, Anchors, and the Test Nobody Wants to Run

Every two-post lift has a minimum concrete spec, and it is not negotiable. Most 10,000 lb units call for at least 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with adequate distance to any joint or edge. Higher capacities want thicker slabs. We have walked into shops where the owner swore the slab was five inches and a core sample came back at three and a half over gravel. One customer in northern Missouri told us his was “about five inches, maybe less” — and to his credit, he wanted it verified before we anchored anything.

If the slab doesn’t pass, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad under each column. In central and southeast Iowa, a pair of engineered pads runs a mid-four-figure add depending on saw work, disposal, rebar and cure time. Budget for the possibility even if you think you’re fine, because discovering it on install day means the crew leaves and comes back. Cure time is the hidden cost — you’re looking at a week or more before anchors go in, which means a bay down longer than planned. We’d rather core a slab on a Tuesday and find bad news than have a column pull an anchor with a customer’s car in the air. That’s the kind of thing that ends a shop, not just a workday.

Line Four: Installation, Power, and Commissioning

Install on a standard overhead two-post in a clean bay is usually a one-day job for a two-person crew: layout, drill and anchor, set columns, hang the overhead, run cables and hoses, plumb the power unit, bleed the system, cycle the lift, set the locks, and check level and synchronization. Where it stretches is retrofits — cutting out an old lift, patching floor, dealing with a low ceiling, or working around a pit that has to stay functional for lube service.

Electrical is a separate trade and a separate invoice. Most single-phase power units want a dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit; three-phase shops often go 208/230 or 460 depending on service. We do not run new circuits — your electrician does, and we tell customers to get that bid in hand at the same time they price the equipment, because in an older building the panel may not have capacity and that’s a bigger project than the lift. For a shop adding two units in adjacent bays, coordinating the electrician and our install crew on the same week saves a mobilization charge on both sides. Financing Terms and the Payment Schedule for Automotive Two Post Lifts

Most shops we sell to don’t pay cash. Equipment financing on automotive two post lifts typically structures as a 36 to 60 month term, and the two common shapes are an equipment finance agreement — you own it at the end, no buyout — or a capital lease with a small residual. For a franchise operator with a couple of years of returns and reasonable credit, the application is short and approvals often come back same-day or next-day. Newer businesses usually need a personal guarantee and sometimes a first-and-last payment down.

The payment schedule matters as much as the rate. On our side, a typical order is a deposit at purchase order to release the equipment, balance on delivery or shortly after install, with install labor invoiced separately once the lift is commissioned. If you’re financing, the lender usually funds against our invoice after delivery, which means you should not expect the finance company to pay the deposit — plan on that coming out of working capital. We also encourage shops to finance the whole project cost, not just the crate: freight, install labor, concrete work and even the electrician can often be bundled into the same agreement if you present it as one project. What We’d Do Differently If We Were Buying the Bay Ourselves

Buy more capacity than you need today, but not two classes more. The jump from 10,000 to 12,000 lb is cheap insurance against the loaded three-quarter-ton that will absolutely show up for an inspection someday. The jump from 12,000 to 18,000 is not — that’s a different price bracket and a different footprint, and if you only see a heavy truck twice a year, you’re better off sending it out. Buy the low-profile and truck adapter sets up front while they’re on the same freight bill instead of paying shipping twice.

Spend the money on the install and skip it on accessories you can add later. We’ve seen shops save a few hundred dollars doing their own anchor layout and then spend triple that fixing a misaligned column set or chasing a hydraulic leak they created. And keep a small parts kit on the shelf from day one — cables, lock cables, a hose, arm restraint gears. Downtime on a two-bay inspection operation is expensive, and the parts that fail are predictable.
