A restoration shop owner about ninety minutes south of the Twin Cities called us last spring with a problem that had nothing to do with hydraulics: he had two bays, four projects, and no way to get a car in the air without shuffling three others out into the gravel first. He was shopping automotive two post lifts, but what he actually needed was a bay layout that let him do CV axle and half-shaft work on a ’70s driver while a frame-off sat parked and untouched on the other side of the shop. That distinction matters more than brand or capacity, and it’s where most lift purchases go sideways. Below is the decision tree we walked him through, start to finish, from budget number to final anchor location.

Start With the Budget Number, Not the Brochure

Every decision tree we build with a customer starts with one honest number: what are you willing to spend, installed, this quarter? Not what you’d love to spend if the shop had a great year. The real number. We ask because the answer immediately eliminates entire branches of the tree, and that saves everyone weeks of circling. Under roughly four thousand dollars, you’re in economy baseplate territory — imported columns, thinner carriage plates, a two-year parts window if you’re lucky, and no install included. Between five and eight thousand, you’re looking at solid mid-tier clearfloor models with real warranties. Above nine or ten thousand installed, you’re into Rotary and Challenger territory with the fabrication quality that survives twenty years of daily cycling.

The restoration guy in southern Minnesota told us he didn’t want to spend ten grand. Fair enough — plenty of shops don’t need to. But we asked a follow-up question that changed his math: how many hours a week will this thing be loaded? He said thirty, minimum, because half-shaft and CV axle jobs are his bread and butter and each one means a car up, wheels off, and a good two hours of wrenching at chest height. At thirty hours a week, the cheap column pays for itself in downtime within four years. He moved his number up. That’s not us upselling — that’s duty cycle telling him what tier he belongs in, and it’s the same conversation we have about automotive two post lifts every week.

Measure the Ceiling Before You Fall in Love With a Clearfloor Model

The second branch of the tree is vertical. Clearfloor lifts route the equalization cables and hydraulic lines through an overhead crossbeam, which is why the floor stays clean and a transmission jack rolls anywhere it wants. The cost is height: most clearfloor units need somewhere around twelve feet of clear ceiling, and taller-capacity models want more. Baseplate designs run everything through a low channel across the floor, so they’ll fit under an eleven-foot or even ten-foot ceiling, but you’re now stepping over a hump every time you cross the bay.

We had a customer in North Dakota with a hard maximum of 139 inches to the lowest obstruction — a little under 11’7″. That’s an automatic baseplate call, no debate, and we told him so before he’d even asked. The southern Minnesota shop had 13’4″ of clear span under the trusses in one bay and only 10’8″ in the other because a mezzanine loft ate the corner. So the answer there was obvious: clearfloor in the tall bay, and the low bay stays a storage and disassembly area. Measure to the lowest thing in the swing path — sprinkler heads, gas heater flue, garage door track when it’s open, conduit runs. We’ve had two installs stall out over an opened sectional door nobody thought to measure, and both times the fix cost more than a tape measure would have. When you’re comparing automotive two post lifts on a spec sheet, overall height is the number that decides for you.

Slab Thickness Is the One Thing You Can’t Negotiate

Concrete is where we say no most often, and we’d rather say it before the truck rolls than after. A ten-thousand-pound two post lift concentrates its entire load into eight or ten anchors spread across two footprints roughly a foot square each. Manufacturers universally call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most want more like four and a quarter with adequate cure time and no control joint or slab edge inside the anchor pattern. A guy in northern Missouri told us his pad was “about five inches, but maybe less” — that “maybe less” is exactly the phrase that means you core-drill and check before ordering anything.

Checking is cheap. A half-inch masonry bit and a piece of coat hanger wire will tell you thickness at the actual anchor locations in twenty minutes. If you come up short, the fix is a saw-cut and pour of new footings — typically a four-by-four-foot pad at each column, ideally eight to twelve inches deep, tied properly and given a full 28-day cure. That’s a weekend and a couple hundred dollars of ready-mix, and it’s the difference between a lift you trust and a lift you look at sideways every time you load a heavy truck. The Minnesota shop had a 1980s pour with unknown reinforcement, so we cored four holes, found a consistent five and a half inches, and moved forward with confidence. Slab quality dictates which automotive two post lifts you can even legally anchor.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric for Restoration Work

Now the tree splits on arm geometry, and for a restoration shop this is the branch that actually affects your daily workflow. A symmetric lift centers the vehicle between the columns with all four arms the same length, so weight sits evenly and the doors open right into the posts. An asymmetric setup rotates the columns roughly thirty degrees and uses shorter front arms, shifting the vehicle rearward so the driver’s door clears the column. If you’re in and out of the cabin all day — starting engines, checking dash lights, moving seats — asymmetric wins easily.

But restoration is a different animal. A lot of what rolls into those bays is long, heavy up front, and sometimes doorless. Full-size trucks, dually one-tons, forties-era sedans with the mass over the front axle. Symmetric handles those better because it balances the load the way the columns were designed to carry it. Our southern Minnesota customer split the difference with a versymmetric model — arms that can be run in either configuration depending on what’s on the drive-on. For his CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, we pushed hard for low-profile front arms with a three-stage telescoping range, because a lot of the front-drive cars he services sit two or three inches lower than factory after somebody’s spring swap. Standard arms won’t slide under a rocker at four inches of ground clearance. A drop-in adapter kit costs less than a tow bill and turns a job you’d turn away into billable hours.

Laying Out the Bay Around the Job, Not the Lift

Here’s where we get to the part almost nobody plans: the eight feet around the lift. A two post puts a car overhead and leaves the floor open, which everybody sees as free space. It isn’t. For half-shaft replacement you need a clear path from the front of the vehicle to your press, room for a wheel dolly to swing, and somewhere to set two front knuckles and a pair of axles that isn’t your only workbench. We tell shops to chalk the whole thing out on the slab first — column locations, arm swing at full extension, and then the traffic lanes.

The standard recommendation is a minimum of three feet on each side of the lift footprint and a good twelve feet of runoff at the drive-on end. In practice we like more. The Minnesota layout ended up with the lift set slightly off-center in the deep bay, pushed toward the exterior wall side, so the interior side had almost six feet of walkway to the parts staging shelf. That single decision — moving the lift eighteen inches off center — is what turned two separate half-shaft jobs a day into three. He also mounted a retractable air reel and a droplight on the ceiling directly above the crossbeam rather than running lines along the wall, which means no cords crossing the traffic lane. Small stuff, but the shops that get real throughput out of automotive two post lifts are the ones that thought about the floor plan before the equipment arrived. Capacity: Buy for the Worst Vehicle, Not the Average One

Capacity is the easiest branch to get wrong because people average instead of maxing. We had a caller whose heaviest vehicle was 6,000 pounds shopping a 9,000-pound unit — that math works. We’ve also had shops buy a 10,000-pound lift and then take in a three-quarter-ton diesel dually with a service body, which is real-world 9,400 pounds before you add a full fuel tank and a toolbox. Now you’re at ninety-eight percent of rated capacity with an unbalanced load, and the equalization cables and carriage bearings are living at the edge of their design envelope every single time.

Our rule: identify the single heaviest thing you’ll ever put in the air, add fifteen percent, and buy the next capacity tier up. For a restoration shop that means asking honestly whether a customer’s loaded ’78 dually or a project truck with an iron big-block is going to show up someday. Ten thousand pounds covers essentially all passenger cars, half-tons, and most three-quarter-tons. Twelve thousand gives you real headroom for heavier trucks and vans. Fourteen and fifteen thousand — the range one Iowa fleet caller was shopping — is where you go if one-tons and box vans are routine. Going up a tier typically adds ten to twenty percent to the price and buys you thicker columns, bigger cylinders, and a much longer service life. Install, Inspection, and What Happens in Year Three

The last branch is the one people skip, and it’s the reason we’re still in business. Installation on a two post is not complicated work, but it is precise work: columns plumb within a sixteenth over their height, anchors torqued to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench, equalization cables tensioned so both carriages arrive at the top within a quarter inch of each other, and a full load test before anybody signs off. A crooked column doesn’t fail on day one. It wears a carriage slide block unevenly for three years and then binds at the worst possible moment.

Some customers genuinely don’t need us on site. The North Dakota caller told us flatly he didn’t want install, and he had a forklift, a helper, and prior experience — that’s a legitimate DIY candidate, and we shipped him a unit and a phone number. But if you’ve never set a lift, the labor is a small fraction of the equipment cost and it comes with a documented load test that your insurance carrier may well ask for. After year one, the maintenance list is short: monthly cable and sheave inspection, quarterly arm-restraint check, annual ANSI/ALI inspection, and fluid at the interval in the manual.
