A retail repair shop might cycle a lift twenty times a day with a fairly predictable mix of passenger cars and light trucks. A municipal fleet bay in Waterloo sees something else entirely: dump truck pickups loaded with tools, plow-equipped one-tons, animal control vans, ambulances with heavy conversions in the back, and the occasional squad car that has been running 24 hours a day for three years. Running a unit near its rated ceiling every day accelerates wear on cables, cylinders, and carriage bearings.
Our general guidance for fleet work is to buy at least one capacity tier above your heaviest regular vehicle. If you’re servicing 6,000 to 8,000 lb trucks, look at 12,000 or 15,000 lb units rather than 10,000. The price difference between tiers is meaningful but not enormous, and it buys you both safety margin and future flexibility. It also protects resale, because a 12,000 or 15,000 lb column set has a much wider buyer pool on the used market than a base-model unit.
