Automotive two post lifts get bought on price more often than any other piece of shop equipment, and the ALI Gold certification label is the single most misunderstood thing in that buying decision. We had a conversation last year with an EV specialty shop owner setting up in West Des Moines who had done real homework — he knew battery-pack weights, he knew his slab thickness, he knew what he wanted for fluid service and coolant work. What he did not know was that the “ALI certified” language on the listing he was about to buy from covered a different model in the same product family than the one in his cart. That distinction matters, and nobody selling online is eager to explain it. So we will.

Myth 1: “ALI Certified” Means the Whole Brand Is Certified
Certification is granted to a specific model configuration, not to a company. A manufacturer can have twelve products in a catalog and have four of them listed with the Automotive Lift Institute. The other eight are perfectly legal to sell, but they have not been third-party tested to the ANSI standard, and the gold label on the manufacturer’s homepage does not transfer to them. This is where most buyers get caught. They see the certification logo on a website, assume it blankets everything on the site, and end up with an uncertified unit believing otherwise.
The fix is thirty seconds of work. The Automotive Lift Institute publishes a searchable directory of certified models, and you look up the exact model designation — not the family name, the full designation including suffixes. If the model in your cart is not in that directory, it is not certified, full stop. We do this check for customers as a matter of course, because we would rather lose a sale than install something a shop’s insurance carrier will later object to. When people ask us which automotive two post lifts are certified, our answer is always “give me the model number and I will tell you in a minute,” never a brand-level yes or no.
Myth 2: Certification Is About Weight Capacity
Buyers routinely assume the gold label means the lift was loaded to its rated capacity and did not break. That is part of it, but a small part. The ANSI/ALI standard covers structural testing well beyond rated load, yes, but it also covers the load-holding devices, the mechanical locks and their engagement, the arm restraint system, the overhead shutoff, the controls and their behavior on power loss, the electrical enclosure, the anchoring specification, and — this is the one people never think about — the completeness and accuracy of the installation and operation manual and the safety labeling.
That documentation piece is more useful than it sounds. A certified unit arrives with an installation manual that states required concrete thickness, cure strength, minimum edge distance from the anchor to any slab joint, and anchor torque values. An uncertified import frequently arrives with a translated sheet that says “concrete must be adequate.” We have been called out to fix installations where the crew followed a vague sheet, anchored four inches from a control joint, and the slab spalled under load within a year. The certification is really a certification of the entire package — hardware, controls, and instructions — which is why it correlates so strongly with installs that go smoothly.
Myth 3: An EV Shop Does Not Need Different Considerations
The West Des Moines shop owner we mentioned was doing something smart: he was planning for battery-electric vehicles as his primary work, plus conventional oil changes and fluid service on hybrids and legacy cars to keep revenue steady. Those two workloads pull the specification in different directions. EVs are heavy and the mass sits low and centrally in a skateboard pack, which means arm reach and pad placement matter far more than raw capacity. A crossover EV can weigh 5,500 pounds with almost no useful lift point at the traditional pinch weld locations, so the pad kit and adapter set is not an afterthought — it is the whole job.
He also needed low-profile arms because several of the vehicles he services sit under five inches at the rocker. And because he does fluid service, he wanted enough height to stand under a vehicle comfortably for a full drain-and-fill rather than crouching. We steered him toward a 12,000 lb asymmetric configuration with a three-stage front arm set and a tall column, which gave him pad reach for long-wheelbase EVs and door clearance for the compact hybrids. Good automotive two post lifts for an EV-forward shop are chosen on geometry first, capacity second — which is backwards from how most people shop.
Myth 4: Certified Automotive Two Post Lifts Are Always the Expensive Ones
Price and certification are correlated but not the same thing, and we see both errors. Some buyers assume any lift over a certain price must be certified, which is not true — we have priced uncertified units that cost more than certified ones because of finish options and included accessories. Others assume anything affordable must be uncertified, and skip perfectly good listed models. There are certified 9,000 and 10,000 lb units at accessible price points from mainstream manufacturers, particularly in baseplate configurations where the material cost is lower than a clear-floor overhead build.
What certification does reliably change is what happens after purchase. A listed model has a manufacturer who is on the hook, a parts catalog that will still exist in eight years, and a service network. We field calls constantly from owners of grey-market equipment who need one arm restraint gear or one lock dog and cannot find a source anywhere, and at that point a two-hundred-dollar part turns into a lift replacement. That is the real cost math. If you are comparing automotive two post lifts across a wide price spread, ask about parts availability in year seven, not just the delivered price this month.
Myth 5: The Concrete Will Probably Be Fine
This is the mistake that costs the most money, and it comes up on nearly every install call we take. The standard specification for most passenger-car two post equipment is four to four and a quarter inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and heavier capacities go up from there. “Probably fine” is not a measurement. We had a caller from a rural shop who told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is exactly where installations fail, because slabs poured over uneven grade vary by an inch or more across a single bay.
Core-drilling or at minimum drilling a test hole at the intended anchor location costs almost nothing compared to a failed anchor set. Also check what is under the slab: post-tension cable, in-floor radiant heat tubing, and conduit runs are all reasons to relocate a column or cut a proper anchor pad. In-floor heat is common in newer Iowa buildings and is an absolute stop-work condition until it is located. If the slab is thin, the answer is not a different lift — it is saw-cutting and pouring a footing pad at each column, typically a few feet square and a foot deep, tied into the existing slab. What We Actually Recommend for a West Des Moines Shop
For a commercial shop in the Des Moines metro doing mixed EV and conventional fluid service, we generally land on a clear-floor overhead 10,000 or 12,000 lb asymmetric unit from Rotary or Challenger, with a full adapter and pad package, a tall column if the ceiling allows, and a documented anchor plan based on an actual slab measurement.
