A body shop foreman in West Des Moines called us last spring with a question we hear constantly about automotive two post lifts: why do the arms on his older unit creep out from under the pinch welds when he’s leaning into a quarter panel with a hammer and dolly? The answer was worn arm restraint gears, and it took about forty minutes to diagnose over the phone. Restoration and metal work put loads on a lift that a straight oil-change bay never sees — sideways force, sustained hours in the air, techs pulling and pushing against the vehicle. Why Restoration Work Is Harder on a Lift Than Fast Lube Work

A quick-service bay cycles a lift ten or fifteen times a day, but each vehicle is up for eight minutes and nobody touches it while it’s there. A restoration bay is the opposite. The car goes up Monday morning and might not come down until Thursday. Techs are underneath with a MIG gun, pulling on floor pan patches, prying at rusted rocker seams, and hanging body weight off the arms. That sustained, off-axis loading is exactly the condition where a marginal arm restraint or a lazy safety cam becomes a real hazard.

We’ve seen the results in central Iowa shops more than once. A restraint gear with rounded teeth will hold fine under vertical load and then let the arm rotate the moment somebody leans hard against a fender. On a unit with a partially engaged safety cam, the lift can settle an inch or two under that same push, which is enough to shift the pad off a pinch weld. Neither failure requires a broken cable or a blown cylinder — the lift looks perfectly healthy right up until it isn’t. When a shop tells us the work is body and metal, we steer them toward automotive two post lifts with positive-locking restraints and audible per-lock engagement, not the lightest-duty option that hits the capacity number.

How Arm Restraints Actually Work

Nearly every modern two-post uses a gear-and-pawl arrangement at the base of each arm. The gear is fixed to the arm’s pivot, the pawl drops into the teeth once the arm carries load, and the arm can no longer swing horizontally. On Rotary units the mechanism is a stout cast gear set inside the carriage; on Challenger it’s a similar arrangement with a spring-loaded pin. Some designs are automatic — load applies, restraint engages. Others use a collar you twist or a sleeve you slide down before raising. Both work when they’re maintained; only one works when your techs are in a hurry.

The failure modes are predictable. Gear teeth wear, especially on lifts where somebody has been swinging arms while loaded to reposition a pad. Pawls seize with grease and grit until they no longer drop fully into the tooth. Sleeves get bent by a dropped transmission and stop sliding. Any of those and the arm is free to move under lateral load. We check restraints on every service call and replace them as a set, not one side, because if one gear is worn the other three are the same age and the same story. On automotive two post lifts used for metal work, we recommend a restraint inspection every ninety days rather than annually — the duty cycle justifies it.

Safety-Cam Engagement: Listen for the Clicks

The mechanical safeties inside each column are the thing standing between your tech and a vehicle coming down under gravity. On most two-post designs, a spring-loaded latch rides the column and drops into a ladder of notches as the carriage rises. When you raise a car and hear the rapid clicking, that’s the latch stepping through the ladder. When you lower the lift onto the locks, the latch takes the load and the cylinder relaxes. The critical part is that both columns must be seated in the same lock position — if one carriage is a notch higher, the car is on an angle and one lock is carrying nearly everything.

Train your crew to lower onto the locks, every time, and to listen for two distinct engagement sounds rather than one. If a column has stopped clicking, the latch mechanism is fouled, the release cable is out of adjustment, or the spring has failed. That’s not a wait-until-next-month repair. We stock latch assemblies, springs, and release cables for the common Rotary and Challenger column designs, and we can usually get a shop back to a fully locking lift the same week. Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Versymmetric for Body Work

Column geometry matters differently in a body bay than in a service bay. A symmetric lift centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms — great load balance, but the doors open right into the posts, which is miserable when you’re in and out of the car fifty times a day fitting trim. An asymmetric design rotates the columns and uses short front arms and long rear arms so the vehicle sits back, giving you real door clearance. Versymmetric designs on Rotary units let you do either, which is why they’re popular in shops that see everything from a Miata to a dually.

For a restoration shop, we usually push toward asymmetric or versymmetric. You gain door swing, and on classic cars with heavy doors and no intrusion beams, banging a door edge into a column is an expensive mistake. The tradeoff is that asymmetric loading demands more attention to arm placement — put a truck on an asymmetric lift as if it were symmetric and you’ve moved the center of gravity in a direction the geometry doesn’t like. Whichever configuration you pick, the arm restraints and safety cams should be the same quality, because asymmetric arms actually see slightly more twisting load than symmetric ones do.

Concrete, Anchors, and Why Restraints Fail Early

Arm restraints and column safeties fail early on lifts that aren’t sitting on the right slab. A column that rocks even slightly under load flexes the carriage, and that flexing works the restraint gears and latch ladders in ways they weren’t designed for. Manufacturer minimums are typically four to four and a quarter inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least twenty-eight days, with adequate distance to any expansion joint or slab edge. In older West Des Moines shop buildings we frequently find three and a half inches over questionable base, and that’s a conversation before it’s an installation.

When the slab isn’t adequate, the fix is a saw-cut footing pad — usually a four-by-four-foot pour per column, deeper than the surrounding slab, tied in and given time to cure. It’s not glamorous and it adds a week, but it’s cheaper than replacing a lift that has been slowly working itself loose. We also check anchor torque on every service visit; loose anchors show up as a column that ticks when a load transfers. Anchors get re-torqued or replaced, and we document it. This is the unromantic part of owning automotive two post lifts, and it’s the part that determines whether your restraints last ten years or three. What to Inspect Before You Buy Used

Plenty of good shops buy used, and we’re not going to talk you out of it — we just want you looking at the right things. Start at the arms. Grab each one at full extension and try to rotate it horizontally with the lift loaded on a test vehicle. Any movement means the restraint is done. Pull the covers and look at the gear teeth: rounded profiles, chipped teeth, or a pawl that doesn’t drop crisply all mean parts. Then run the lift to full height and listen. Missing clicks, uneven clicks, or one column that stops latching partway up all point to latch or cable work.

After that, check cables for broken strands at the sheaves, look for hydraulic weeping at the cylinder rod seals, and inspect the column base plates for cracked concrete or rust jacking. Get the serial number and data plate photographed — without it, parts sourcing turns into guesswork, and on some older imported automotive two post lifts nothing is available at all. That last point is where a lot of used deals go bad. Getting It Installed and Certified in Central Iowa
