Choosing between symmetric and asymmetric automotive two post lifts is the single decision that trips up more Iowa buyers than anything else, and last spring it came up again on a job in West Des Moines. The customer builds overland rigs — lifted 4Runners, Tacomas on 35s, a couple of Land Cruisers, one full-size van with a rooftop tent — and he services differentials, transfer cases, and lockers almost daily. He’d been quoted a symmetric column by an online seller and nearly bought it before calling us. What Symmetric and Asymmetric Actually Mean on the Shop Floor

The vocabulary gets abused constantly in online listings, so let’s be precise. On a symmetric column set, the posts face each other directly and all four arms are the same length. The vehicle sits centered between the columns, with roughly half its length in front of the posts and half behind. That puts the driver’s door right at the column. On an asymmetric set, the columns are rotated — typically around 30 degrees — and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. The vehicle sits back in the bay, moving the door opening forward of the column so you can actually get in and out once it’s off the ground.

The reason this matters is weight distribution. Most passenger cars carry roughly 60 to 65 percent of their mass over the front axle. Asymmetric geometry positions the vehicle so that heavier front end sits closer to the columns, and the shorter front arms are engineered for that load. Symmetric geometry splits the load evenly and handles long-wheelbase, evenly balanced vehicles better — dually pickups, cargo vans, box trucks. When people ask us which is better, the honest answer is that neither one wins on paper. The right answer for automotive two post lifts depends entirely on what rolls into your bay and how often you need to open a door while the vehicle is in the air.

The West Des Moines Bay: Real Numbers, Real Constraints

His shop is a 34-foot-deep bay in a leased light-industrial building off a frontage road, with a 14-foot overhead door and a measured 13-foot-9-inch clear ceiling to the bottom of the bar joists. That ceiling number ended up mattering more than anything else. He wanted a clearfloor overhead-style unit, which needs the crossbar and shutoff bar overhead. With a 12-foot-plus overall column height plus the bar, and 35-inch tires under a rig that already has a 3-inch suspension lift and a rooftop tent, the math got tight fast. A 4Runner with a tent on the rack can push 84 inches tall before you ever raise it.

We ran the numbers with him on a legal pad in the bay. To get a differential drain plug at a comfortable working height — call it 48 inches off the floor — with a vehicle that’s 84 inches tall sitting on rubber pads that add another 5 inches, he’d need about 137 inches of headroom before the overhead assembly. He didn’t have it. So we specced a baseplate configuration instead, which routes the equalization cables and hydraulic line through a floor plate between the columns rather than overhead. That single change bought him every inch of ceiling back. Baseplate models are the quiet workhorse of automotive two post lifts in older Iowa buildings, and we install more of them here than most people would guess.

Why Differential Service Pushed the Decision to Asymmetric

Watching him work sealed it. His bread and butter is regearing and fluid service: pull the diff cover, scrape, reseal, refill front and rear, then check transfer case and both axle breathers. That job means he’s under the vehicle for forty minutes at a stretch, then walking to the front, then back, then reaching into the cab to cycle the transfer case selector or check a 4WD indicator light.

On a symmetric setup, that cab access is genuinely miserable. The column sits right where the door swings. He’d been working on a borrowed symmetric unit for two years and had the dented door edges to prove it — not his own vehicles, customer vehicles, which is a conversation nobody wants to have. With asymmetric columns and the vehicle set back, the door clears the post cleanly on nearly every mid-size SUV and half-ton pickup. He can climb in, shift the case, climb out, and get back under without a fight. We also spec’d truck adapter kits — 3-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch stackable pads — because pinch-weld pads are useless on a body-on-frame rig with rock sliders welded to the frame. Anyone shopping automotive two post lifts for lifted trucks should budget for adapters on day one, not as an afterthought six months later.

Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Talk About

We core-drilled two test holes before we quoted the install. His slab came back at 5.5 inches of what looked like a decent 3,500 PSI pour with no rebar we could find and no visible cracking within eight feet of the intended anchor locations. That’s acceptable for a 10,000 lb capacity column set, which is what he ended up with. It would not have been acceptable for a 12,000 or 15,000 lb unit — those want 6 inches minimum, sometimes more, depending on the manufacturer’s spec.

This is where we lose deals to internet sellers, and we’re fine with that. A shipper who drops a crate at the curb has no idea what’s under your feet. We’ve been called out to central Iowa shops where somebody anchored a heavy column set into a 4-inch garage slab poured over uncompacted fill, and the anchors pulled a cone of concrete out of the floor the first time a loaded truck went up. Nobody was hurt in that particular case. That’s luck, not engineering. If your slab is questionable, the fix is a saw-cut and a poured pad — typically 4 feet by 4 feet, 8 to 12 inches deep, tied into the existing floor. It’s a middling four-figure add-on, it takes a week to cure properly, and it is not optional. Every set of automotive two post lifts we put in gets a concrete check first.

Capacity, Rise, and What the Sticker Doesn’t Tell You

He initially asked about a 12,000 lb unit because his heaviest customer vehicle is a loaded 3/4-ton with a flatbed and a truck camper, somewhere around 8,600 lbs on the scale. We talked him down to 10,000. Here’s why: capacity ratings on two-post equipment are total lift capacity, distributed across all four arms per the manufacturer’s loading diagram. An 8,600 lb truck on a 10,000 lb column set is inside spec with real margin. Going to 12,000 would have added roughly a foot of column height he didn’t have, cost meaningfully more, and required the thicker slab we already established he doesn’t have.

What we did push him on was rise height and arm reach. Maximum lifting height matters less than usable height under the vehicle at the point where the arms contact. A unit advertising 74 inches of rise gives you 74 inches to the top of the arm pad, not to the frame rail. Add the pad stack and the vehicle’s own ride height and you lose working room fast. We also checked minimum arm pad height in the fully lowered position — critical for low-clearance vehicles, and the reason low-profile arms exist. The Install Day and What Went Sideways

Two of our techs did the install in a single day, which is typical when the concrete checks out and the electrical is ready. It wasn’t ready. The building had a 230V single-phase circuit run to the bay, but it was fed by a breaker sized for a compressor, not a power unit, and the receptacle was 26 feet from where the drive-side column needed to land. His electrician handled it, but it added a day and it’s the number one avoidable delay we see on installs across Iowa.

The other wrinkle: his floor had a 1.25-inch fall across the bay for drainage, which is normal in a light-industrial building and a real problem for column plumb. We shimmed both bases with manufacturer-approved steel shims — never composite, never washers stacked up, and never more than the shim thickness the manufacturer allows before they require a leveling pour. Both columns came in plumb within tolerance, the equalization cables got tensioned and re-tensioned after a break-in cycle, and we ran the full ALI safety checklist before we handed it over. That last part is where the internet-crate route falls apart. Properly installed automotive two post lifts should be inspected annually by a qualified inspector, and we schedule those for every unit we put in.

What We’d Tell the Next Overlanding Shop

If you build and service lifted rigs, go asymmetric unless your fleet is dominated by long vans and duallys. Budget for adapter pads before you buy the columns. Measure your true clear ceiling to the lowest obstruction — sprinkler heads, conduit, that one bar joist — not to the deck. Core the slab before you commit to a capacity. And get your electrical squared away before the truck shows up.

One more thing that matters for this crowd specifically: think about where you’ll put the vehicle’s own weight when it’s apart. Overlanders come in loaded — drawers, water tanks, fridges, spare tires on swing-outs — and unloading a rig to service it changes the balance. We’ve seen guys pull 200 lbs of gear out of the back and then wonder why the arm pads want to walk when they crack loose a rusty driveshaft bolt. Always re-verify contact after any significant weight change, and always let the safety locks engage before you get under. None of this is exotic. It’s just the difference between equipment that works for fifteen years and equipment that scares you.
