Why Wheel Bearing Work Is Hard on a Lift
Pressing a hub assembly out of a knuckle is not a gentle operation. You are hammering, prying, running an impact at 700 foot-pounds, and sometimes leaning your whole body weight into a breaker bar with a pipe on it. All of that force goes into the vehicle, which transfers it into the arms and columns. Add a slide hammer on a stuck rear axle bearing and you are inducing shock loads no static capacity rating describes.
That is why bearing and suspension shops chew through lift components faster than oil-change bays. We see worn arm pin bores, sloppy arm restraint gears, and stretched equalizer cables on lifts that are only six or seven years old but have lived under a suspension tech the whole time. In the Great Lakes region there is a second factor: salt. Trucks that run county roads all winter come in with rust-welded fasteners, so every job involves more heat, more force, and more time in the air. This customer told us a single rear bearing on a rusty half-ton could tie up his bay for three hours. Three hours of a truck sitting on locks means the mechanical lock system, not the hydraulics, is holding the load — and that is the exact component ALI certification tests hardest.
What ALI Gold Certification Actually Verifies
The Automotive Lift Institute Gold Label is not a self-declared sticker. To carry it, a model has to be tested by an independent, accredited lab against ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, and the manufacturer’s factory has to submit to ongoing audits so that what ships matches what was tested. The lab loads the lift beyond its rated capacity, cycles it thousands of times, tests the lock mechanisms with the hydraulics deliberately failed, evaluates the anchoring instructions, and reviews the operating manual and safety labeling.
That last part matters more than people expect. A big chunk of the certification is documentation: are the load limits legible on the lift, are the arm positioning instructions clear, does the manual specify concrete depth and PSI and anchor torque. The mechanic who called us had none of that, which meant he had no idea what his mystery columns were rated for, what concrete they needed, or how the lock system was supposed to behave. When we looked at photos, the lock ladders had visible wear at the engagement points and one cable had a broken strand near the sheave. We would not have put a lawn mower on it. Specifying the Replacement for Salt-Belt Truck Work
Once he decided to buy new, the spec conversation got straightforward. His heaviest regular vehicle was a three-quarter-ton crew cab at around 8,500 pounds curb weight, and he occasionally sees a loaded one-ton service truck. That ruled out a 9,000 lb unit immediately. We do not spec to the average vehicle, we spec to the heaviest one plus margin, so we landed on a 12,000 lb symmetric clearfloor with three-stage arms front and rear.
Symmetric was the right call here specifically because of his vehicle mix. Long-wheelbase pickups need balanced arm reach and even column loading, and door clearance is a non-issue when you are working under the truck rather than climbing in and out of it. We also specified galvanized cables and added truck adapters, since bearing work means lifting by frame rails on body-on-frame vehicles rather than pinch welds. That is typical: the equipment installs in a day, and the prep work takes weeks. Power was another item — 220V single-phase on a dedicated 30-amp circuit, which meant a subpanel run. He hauled it to a scrap yard and got a few hundred dollars of steel value out of it, which is the honest outcome.
We spend a fair amount of time on used equipment questions. What does not work is buying anonymous steel. If you cannot look up the model in the ALI directory, you cannot verify the capacity, you cannot get the anchoring spec, and you cannot get replacement cables or lock components.
