Overlanding builders in the Des Moines metro have a specific problem. The trucks they modify are taller, heavier, and geometrically weirder than the passenger cars that automotive two post lifts were originally designed for. When a Waukee builder called us last spring about installing a lift capable of handling a fully loaded, roof-tent-carrying Tacoma with 37-inch tires and a rear bumper the size of a small couch, we knew this wouldn’t be a normal install. He needed the lift for tire rotations, brake service, and eventually a cylinder rebuild the following winter. Here’s how the case study played out from install day through the first real repair.

Site Survey Before the Truck Left the Yard

Before we quoted the install we drove out to Waukee for a site walk. The builder’s shop was a 40-by-60 pole barn with 16-foot sidewalls, a six-inch slab poured in 2019 at 4,000 PSI (we had the paperwork), and a 200-amp service panel with room for a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Ceiling clearance at the truss chord measured 14 feet 4 inches, more than enough for an overhead configuration and plenty of margin for a Tacoma with a roof tent to raise to full height without smacking anything.

What made the site tricky was the door width. The overhead door was 12 feet wide, and while that’s plenty for a stock truck, the builder’s daily driver already had a rock rail wider than the factory sheet metal. The lift’s column spacing had to leave room to open both doors when the truck was on the pads. We measured, sketched, and settled on a symmetric configuration with 128-inch spacing between columns. That gave him about 30 inches of clearance on each side of the truck to fully open the doors and step down comfortably. Sites like this take an hour on-site, and they save us three phone calls later. Every site survey for automotive two post lifts we quote in an overlanding shop bends this way, because the trucks are wider than sedans and the doors swing farther.

Why We Recommended 12K Automotive Two Post Lifts, Not 10K

Overlanding builds are heavier than they look. A stock Tacoma weighs around 4,500 pounds. Add a 300-pound roof tent, a 150-pound bumper, a 400-pound bed rack with drawers, an 80-pound spare on the tailgate, an ARB fridge, a compressor, tools, water, and by the time the truck is loaded for a trip you’re pushing 6,500 pounds. On automotive two post lifts, a 10,000-pound capacity rating means the lift is safe for a vehicle at or below that weight. No margin for surprises.

We recommended a 12,000-pound unit for the Waukee builder because his shop was seeing not just his own truck but customer builds. Sprinters, Land Cruisers, expedition-modified F-250s, and none of those come in under the 10K threshold once they’re loaded. The extra capacity added maybe 15 percent to the lift cost and moved the required electrical from 20-amp to 30-amp, which he already had. It also came with taller columns (12 feet) and longer arms, both of which matched the site perfectly. The lesson we repeat every week: don’t buy right at the edge of your capacity envelope. Automotive two post lifts get run harder over ten years than any owner expects, and the difference in cost between a 10K and a 12K is small compared to the peace of mind of knowing you’re not creeping up on the rating every time a customer rolls in.

Install Day and the Hydraulic Line Routing Choice

The lift arrived on a Wednesday and we installed it on Thursday and Friday of the same week. Anchor holes drilled first thing, 3/4-inch wedge anchors, 5.5 inches deep, 90 foot-pounds of torque, all eight anchors set clean. Columns raised with an engine hoist and shimmed plumb. Overhead beam bolted between the columns and squared to the base plates.

Where the install got interesting was the hydraulic line. On a chain-drive symmetric two-post, the slave cylinder needs a hydraulic line running from the master to the far column. That line can route either through the overhead beam or across the floor between the columns. Our default is through the overhead. It keeps the floor clean and gives no trip hazard. But the builder wanted a shop crane track running exactly where the overhead line would sit. So we routed the hydraulic line through the base plate crossover, secured it under a quarter-inch steel channel bolted to the floor, and marked it in bright yellow paint. Not the prettiest solution, but the crane track works and the hydraulic line is protected. Install day flexibility matters. We’re not welded to one right answer, and neither should any installer be. If your shop layout suggests a different route for automotive two post lifts, ask for it and see what the installer says.

Tire Rotation on a Truck With 37-Inch Tires

Once the lift was running, the builder’s first real use was a tire rotation on his own Tacoma. Thirty-seven-inch tires weigh about 90 pounds each with a wheel. More than a small hay bale. On a floor jack that job takes two people and a lot of grunt work. On automotive two post lifts, one person can rotate all four tires in under half an hour, without breaking a sweat.

The workflow: raise the truck to comfortable working height (about chest level), engage safety locks, break lug nuts loose with an impact, remove wheels, roll them to a swap position on a small dolly, torque back to spec with a click-type torque wrench. That’s the whole job. The builder timed himself and clocked 24 minutes flat for a full rotation with cross-pattern, including a visual brake inspection on each corner. Compare that to the 90-plus minutes he used to spend with a floor jack and jack stands, and the lift paid for itself on tire work alone within a couple of years. Add in the customer trucks he now services on the same lift, and the payback shortens dramatically. Tire rotation is not glamorous, but it’s the highest-frequency job on any overlanding build, and the right lift changes it from a chore to a coffee-break task. That change is worth more than any single-brand feature comparison.

The Cylinder Seal Rebuild in Year Two

Fast forward to the following winter. The builder noticed a small puddle of hydraulic fluid on the floor under the driver-side column one morning. He wiped it up, kept working, saw it again the next day. Called us. This is a common story with automotive two post lifts that see heavy use. Cylinders that survive light-duty passenger-car service for a decade get pushed harder in a shop rotating 6,500-pound loaded overlanders.

Two years was on the short end of expected seal life, but not shockingly so. We shipped him the correct rebuild kit for his lift model and walked him through the process over a video call. Same procedure as we describe in our other case studies. Decompress the system, disconnect and remove the cylinder, replace rod seal, piston seal, wiper, and O-rings, reinstall, refill, bleed. He did the work over a weekend and had the lift back in service by Monday morning. Total downtime: five days for shipping, half a day for the rebuild. Total cost: under three hundred dollars in parts and fluid. If he’d shipped the cylinder to us or brought us in for the labor, add roughly four hundred more. What Overlanding Builders Should Buy Differently

If we could design automotive two post lifts specifically for overlanding shops, we’d change three things from the standard configuration. First, taller pad extensions as a default option. Six-inch, nine-inch, and twelve-inch stackable pads to reach the frame rails of vehicles with skid plates, rock sliders, and armor. Second, longer front arms with a wider swing envelope, because overland builds put frame contact points closer to the wheel wells than passenger cars do. Third, a wider column spacing standard, 132 inches or so, because half the trucks that come into an overlanding shop have doors that swing wider than a normal sedan due to armor and step bars.

None of that is exotic, and any decent lift dealer can spec these options if you ask. What we see most often is builders buying a stock 10K passenger-car configuration and then modifying it with aftermarket pad extensions and hoping for the best. Do it right at the order stage instead. Every one of our overlanding customers who let us configure their lift for the actual vehicles they work on has been happier at year two than the ones who tried to save eight hundred dollars up front. If you’re planning an overlanding build shop, tell your lift dealer what vehicles you’ll actually work on and let them spec accordingly. That’s a five-minute conversation that changes the next ten years of your ownership experience.

Case Study Takeaways for Iowa Builders

The Waukee case study runs about eighteen months from install through first major service, and the lessons are consistent with every Iowa install we do. Site survey saves problems. Capacity margin is cheap insurance. Configuration matters more than model name. A well-specified 12K in the right layout beats a poorly configured 20K every time. Cylinder rebuilds on automotive two post lifts are a normal maintenance event, not a warranty crisis, and if your dealer treats them as such you can budget for one every few years without stress.
