An independent shop owner in Waukee called us this spring after his old asymmetric 9K quit holding pressure mid-oil-pan-gasket job. He was down to one bay working and needed to decide between two configurations of automotive two post lifts — a 10,000 lb overhead symmetric and a 12,000 lb overhead asymmetric — for a mixed-vehicle repair shop that does a lot of oil pan and engine cradle work. The Waukee shop and the vehicle mix
His shop runs three bays, does 55 percent domestic light truck, 30 percent import passenger cars, and 15 percent one-ton diesel. Oil pan gasket jobs land on his lift monthly for the Ecoboost F-150s and every third Duramax that comes in with a leak. Both jobs need the front of the engine crossmember dropped or clearanced, which is a two-post job with clean underside access. Automotive two post lifts are the only lift class that opens that access the way he needs. The question was capacity and arm geometry — does the 10K symmetric handle 90 percent of his work, or does he pay the freight for a 12K asymmetric so the diesels come with less drama? The vehicle mix said 12K, but we ran the numbers both ways.
Site survey — what we measured
We showed up with a rotary hammer, a laser measure, and a copy of the manufacturer install manuals for both automotive two post lifts we were quoting. The slab measured 5″ of 4,000 PSI concrete with visible rebar, which passed both lifts’ minimum requirements. Ceiling clearance to the lowest joist was 12 feet 4 inches — enough for either overhead beam. Column-to-column spacing had to allow a Duramax dually to drive through, which meant we wanted at least 108 inches drive-through width. Existing electrical was 220V single-phase off a 100A subpanel, which was fine for either lift’s power unit. Bay depth was 24 feet, more than enough for either lift’s overall length. The site survey took forty minutes and killed a whole afternoon of second-guessing.
Configuration A: 10,000 lb overhead symmetric
The 10K symmetric was a Rotary SPO10 in overhead configuration with three-stage front arms. Capacity per arm is 2,500 lb, drive-through width is 108 inches, and rise height is 74 inches at the pad. For the F-150s and everything import, this was a comfortable lift with headroom on capacity. Symmetric arm geometry means the vehicle sits centered between the columns — good for balance, less good for door clearance on wide trucks. For oil pan gasket work on a passenger car this configuration is honestly plenty. The drawback showed on the diesel end of his work — a Duramax at ~7,800 lb is right at the top edge of comfortable working capacity for a 10K, and the arm reach on longer wheelbase trucks was going to be right at the limit of the front-arm extension.
Configuration B: 12,000 lb overhead asymmetric
The 12K asymmetric was a Challenger CL12 in overhead with 30-degree rotated columns and dual telescoping front and rear arms. Capacity per arm is 3,000 lb, drive-through width is 106 inches, and rise height is 76 inches. The rotation puts the vehicle rear of the columns, opening the driver’s and passenger’s doors wide even on a crew cab. On oil pan work he’d be walking under the vehicle constantly, so the door swing and the front-arm reach both mattered. The asymmetric arm geometry gets the pad points further inboard on a truck frame than the symmetric equivalent, which for a Duramax oil-pan pull is genuinely useful. Capacity headroom was the real story — a 3/4-ton or one-ton lifts on this without stressing the arm structure.
Where the two configurations diverged on real jobs
Automotive two post lifts look similar from ten feet away and behave very differently under a specific job. On a Camry oil pan gasket, both lifts felt identical — the tech would not know which one he was using. On a Duramax oil pan gasket, the asymmetric 12K let him walk in and out of the driver’s door without ducking, and the arm reach hit the factory pinch-weld pad locations without stretching. On the 10K symmetric, he had to slide down the seat and step out sideways because the door hit the column. That is a small annoyance ten times a day, and it adds up. On the flip side, the 10K symmetric was $2,000 cheaper delivered and would have handled 85 percent of his book of business without complaint.
Install prep — what he had to do before delivery
Regardless of which lift he picked, install prep was the same. Clear a 20×14 foot area, empty the bay of everything on wheels, confirm the panel has capacity for a double-pole 30 breaker, and have someone available to sign for the freight with liftgate service. He also had to move the parts washer that was living in the front corner of the bay because the swing radius of the front arms was going to eat that spot. He picked the 12K asymmetric. The math was simple — the extra capacity paid for itself the first time a diesel came in without a workaround, and the door swing on his three-truck-a-week schedule was worth the delta on its own.
