The Core Difference in Fifty Words
Overhead automotive two post lifts run their hydraulic and equalization lines through a crossbeam at the top of the columns. The crossbeam carries a shutoff bar that stops the lift before a vehicle roof hits the ceiling. Baseplate automotive two post lifts route the same lines through a floor plate between the columns. There is no shutoff bar because there is no crossbar. Structurally, both configurations carry the same rated load and both pass the same ALI Gold certification when specified from Rotary or Challenger.
The choice between the two is driven almost entirely by ceiling height and by what you plan to lift. Everything else — cable routing, arm style, capacity — is independent of the overhead-vs-baseplate call. Buyers get hung up on this decision more than any other, and it is genuinely the easiest one to make correctly if you have a tape measure and a shop use-case in mind.
Checklist Item One: Measure the Truss, Not the Drywall
Farm shops on the Iowa-Nebraska border are almost universally pole barns with truss ceilings and steel roofing. The drywall or ceiling panels — if any exist — sit below the truss chord by six to twelve inches. Overhead automotive two post lifts need clearance to the actual truss because the shutoff bar and the hydraulic reservoir sit above the crossbeam. The border owner measured to his ceiling panel at 12 feet 6 inches, but the truss chord was 11 feet 10 inches. That flipped him from overhead to baseplate.
The rule we use: measure at the lowest point the lift will occupy across the full bay length. If any truss chord is under 12 feet, you are shopping baseplate. If every truss chord is 12 feet or higher and you have room for the additional 8 to 10 inches the overhead crossbeam and hydraulic block will consume, you can go overhead. Take a photo up at the truss with a tape and text it to us — we will call it either way in five minutes.
Checklist Item Two: What Vehicles Are You Lifting?
Farm shops lift a mix. On the Nebraska-side border shop the fleet was a 6,800 lb three-quarter-ton pickup with a service body, a 5,900 lb crew-cab truck, an SUV around 5,500 lb, and occasionally a small implement or side-by-side. That is a 10,000 lb capacity story with 3-stage arms for the varied wheelbases. It is not a 15,000 lb story unless you routinely lift a fully-loaded dually with a slide-in camper.
Vehicle height matters more for overhead than baseplate. A 6-foot-6 truck with a service body climbs to about 12 feet of total height at full lift, which needs 12 feet 8 inches of clear ceiling for overhead. Baseplate is limited only by your working height — you stop lifting when your head is comfortable. For a farm shop lifting tall trucks and occasional cab-swap projects, baseplate automotive two post lifts give you the extra six to eight inches of practical rise. That was decisive for our border owner.
Checklist Item Three: Exhaust and Driveline Access
Exhaust and driveline work has the vehicle up at chest to shoulder height for extended sessions with a MIG welder or a driveline dolly. Both overhead and baseplate automotive two post lifts do this well, but baseplate wins slightly on driveline access because there is nothing overhead to snag a drop-light, a welding lead, or an overhead crane trolley. Farm shops with jib cranes or fixed overhead hoists strongly prefer baseplate.
The border owner had a 2-ton chain fall mounted on an overhead I-beam running the length of the bay. Overhead automotive two post lifts would have forced him to relocate the beam or shorten its travel. Baseplate kept his existing crane operational and let him pull driveshafts straight out with the chain fall’s assist. That single workflow reality saved him a day of shop reconfiguration and roughly two grand of steelwork. Think about your existing overhead infrastructure before deciding.
Checklist Item Four: Floor Trip Hazard and Rolling Tools
The one legitimate knock on baseplate automotive two post lifts is the floor plate between the columns. It is roughly a 6-by-30 inch steel plate roughly 1.5 inches proud of the slab. Toolboxes on hard casters bump over it fine. Floor jacks roll across it. Air hoses catch briefly. Nobody has tripped over one in our install history, but new users notice it for the first week.
Overhead configurations put the crossbeam at 12 feet plus and the floor between the columns is smooth slab. If you are running a wet-service bay with drain trays, snake-arm oil pumps, and everything on wheels, that clear floor is worth something. On the border farm shop the owner was fine with the baseplate floor plate because he mostly walks with a torque wrench and a MIG lead, and the plate does not slow him down. Weigh the tradeoff against your actual daily movement pattern.
Checklist Item Five: Install Complexity and Cost
Install labor is comparable between the two configurations. Overhead automotive two post lifts are slightly faster to install because the crossbeam ties the columns together at the top, giving you a self-plumbing structure. Baseplate installations require a more careful column-plumb check because there is no top brace. In practice our crew installs either in a single day.
Sticker price is within a few hundred dollars either way for the same model line. Rotary lists their SPOA10 in both overhead and baseplate at similar retail. Where the money actually moves is in secondary work: overhead may require a truss reinforcement plate if your ceiling framing is marginal, and baseplate may require a floor plate anchoring pattern that eats a bit more concrete work. On our border install the baseplate came in slightly cheaper because we did not need any truss modification. Both configurations of automotive two post lifts are honest choices at similar prices.
Our Recommendation for a Border Farm Shop
Given a 11-foot-10 truss height, a 6,800 lb heaviest vehicle, an existing overhead crane, and exhaust and driveline work as the primary use case, we specified a baseplate Rotary SPOA10 with 3-stage front arms, standard motor, and truck adapters for the service-body pickup. The shop has run for over a year with zero issues. The owner does his own exhaust patch welds, driveline U-joint swaps, and occasional transmission drops in a bay that used to require lying on his back in gravel.
