What actually shows up on the truck
Automotive two post lifts arrive on a common carrier LTL freight truck as one large pallet: two columns strapped upright on a heavy skid, arms and hardware boxed on top, hydraulic power unit in its own box, cables and small parts in a labeled kit. Total shipping weight is roughly 1,900 pounds for a 10,000-pound-class lift and closer to 2,400 pounds for a 12,000-pound-class lift. The pallet is about eight feet long, four feet wide, and stands roughly six and a half feet tall including the columns. That’s an unwieldy piece of freight and it does not fit through a standard 36-inch personnel door.
The Sioux City shop had a 12-foot overhead door and a graveled apron out front. That was enough for the freight truck to back up to the door and drop the pallet. What it was not enough for was getting the pallet off the truck. Lift freight almost always requires a lift-gate on the truck, and even with a lift-gate the driver’s job ends when the pallet is on the ground. From there, moving the pallet into the shop and standing the columns up is on the buyer — and that’s where forklift logistics enters the story.
The forklift question every mobile-to-fixed transition faces
The Sioux City mechanic didn’t own a forklift. He had a customer who ran a small yard nearby who did, and we told him early to lock that favor in on the delivery day. He got the core done for about $200 through a local testing lab, the concrete came back at 3,400 PSI, and we set the columns eight inches off the crack line. That decision took an extra half-day of layout work and saved him from an anchor-failure event down the road. Do not skip this step on any older converted building.
Suspension and shock replacement: arm geometry that works
The workflow he was building the shop for — suspension and shock replacement, mostly on half-tons and mid-size SUVs — puts different demands on automotive two post lifts than, say, a European wheel bearing bay. The vehicles are heavier (needing 10,000-pound capacity comfortably, not a 9,000-pound minimum), they sit higher off the ground (so low pad drop is less critical), and the work involves a lot of front-end tie-rod and control-arm access where the tech is under the front of the vehicle with an impact gun.

The three-stage fronts give the tech pad flexibility to move the fronts inboard for shorter-wheelbase SUVs and back out for longer trucks. The asymmetric geometry positions the vehicle so the driver’s door clears the column with the vehicle raised — important when a suspension job requires steering-wheel repositioning in the cabin mid-job. The delivery day timeline that actually works

That’s one full day of install with two techs.
