Why Warranty Talk Starts With Safety, Not Savings

Fleet managers get judged on uptime and on incident reports. A warranty claim is really a statement about a safety-critical component that failed earlier than the manufacturer said it should, and that framing changes how you handle it. When a lock latch stops engaging on one column, the correct sequence is tag the lift out of service, lower it empty, document the fault with photos, then call. The wrong sequence — which we see constantly — is keep running it on the good column while someone shops for a price on the part. Two-post columns are engineered as a pair, and a single non-engaging latch means the entire load path is depending on hydraulic pressure alone. That’s not a warranty question anymore. That’s a hazard.

The good news is that treating it as a safety issue usually gets you a better warranty outcome. Manufacturers of automotive two post lifts respond faster to a documented, out-of-service condition than to a vague complaint about noise. In the West Des Moines case, the city’s mechanic had actually logged the failed restraint in a daily checklist three weeks earlier, which gave us a date, a description, and a witness. That log turned an argument into a shipment. If your shop keeps nothing else, keep a one-page daily lift check per bay with a date, initials, and a pass/fail on locks, cables, arm restraints, and hose condition. It costs nothing and it is the single most useful document in any claim.

What Manufacturer Warranties Actually Cover on Automotive Two Post Lifts

Coverage tiers vary by brand, but the pattern is consistent. Structural steel — columns, carriages, arms, base frames or overhead beams — typically carries the longest term, often five years and sometimes longer on commercial-grade equipment. Hydraulic components sit in the middle: cylinders and power units usually get one to two years, sometimes with separate seal coverage. Wear items get the shortest window or none at all. Cables, sheaves, lock dogs, arm pads, hoses, and electrical switches are consumables in the manufacturer’s eyes, because they’re designed to be replaced on a service interval rather than to last the life of the equipment.

That distinction matters when you’re budgeting a municipal fleet. If you assume the whole lift is covered for five years, you’ll be surprised the first time a cable set needs replacing at year four. We tell fleet shops to plan cables, pads, and hydraulic hoses as scheduled maintenance line items regardless of warranty, and to reserve the warranty for what it’s actually for: a column that racks, a carriage that binds, a cylinder that weeps at the gland, a power unit that won’t build pressure. Labor is the other gap. Many warranties on automotive two post lifts cover parts only, or cover labor for a shorter first period. Ask specifically. A cylinder shipped free is still a half-day of skilled labor plus fluid, and if that labor isn’t covered you want to know before the invoice.

The Annual Inspection That Keeps a Claim Alive

Every major manufacturer conditions warranty coverage on maintenance performed per the owner’s manual, and nearly every manual references an annual inspection by a qualified inspector. In practice, the annual inspection is what separates a claim that gets paid from a claim that gets denied. It creates a dated third-party record that the equipment was in specified condition, adjusted correctly, and free of known defects. If a column fails eighteen months after a documented inspection, the manufacturer has very little room to argue the failure came from abuse or neglect.

For a fleet operation running several bays, we usually schedule all lifts on the same day. Our technician checks anchor bolt torque, column plumb, carriage slide clearance, cable tension and equalization, lock engagement at every position, arm restraint function, overhead shutoff or low-pressure cutoff operation, hydraulic fluid level and condition, and hose routing. We measure and record rather than eyeball, because a number on a form is evidence and “looked fine” is not. In the West Des Moines shop, the inspection turned up something the staff hadn’t noticed: the anchors on one column of the older pair had loosened enough that the base plate had a hairline gap under load. That’s a repair, not a claim, but catching it during a scheduled visit rather than during a failure is the entire point of automotive two post lifts being inspected on a calendar instead of on a hunch. How to Document a Failure So the Claim Goes Through

The claim process is not mysterious, but it is unforgiving about detail. Every manufacturer wants the model number, the serial number, the install date, and a clear description of the failure. Serial plates on two-post equipment live on the inside face of a column or near the power unit, and on a nine-year-old lift they’re often painted over or coated in grease. Before you need it, clean the plate, photograph it, and put that photo somewhere your whole staff can find. We’ve had claims sit for a week purely because nobody could read a serial.

Then build the packet. Photographs of the failed component from three angles, a photo showing the failure in context on the column, the relevant page of your maintenance log, and a short written timeline: when the symptom started, what changed, what the shop did in response. If the lift was tagged out, say so and give the date. If a vehicle was on it when the fault appeared, describe the vehicle and its approximate weight honestly — trying to hide an overload almost always backfires, because failure surfaces tell the story anyway. Without it, you’re in a slow back-and-forth where the manufacturer keeps asking for the thing you didn’t send.

Where Installation Quality Decides Coverage

Warranty denials rarely come down to bad steel. They come down to installation. Anchors set in thin or cracked concrete, columns out of plumb, cables tensioned unevenly, a power unit wired for the wrong voltage, or a base plate shimmed with whatever was in the truck — all of these void or weaken coverage, and all of them are visible to an experienced technician years later. Concrete is the usual culprit. Commercial two-post equipment typically calls for a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength, and if the pour doesn’t meet it, the manufacturer’s obligation ends at the point where their instructions were ignored.

For municipal shops this comes up when lifts are relocated during a remodel. A lift that was correctly installed in 2015 gets moved to a different bay in 2022, re-anchored into an unknown slab, and the paperwork trail breaks. If you move equipment, core or scan the new location, keep the results, and get the reinstall documented by whoever does the work. When a customer later needs to prove the equipment was installed to spec, that one sheet does it. A municipal fleet doesn’t use a lift the way a retail repair shop does. The vehicle mix skews heavy and wide: pickups, one-ton service trucks, small dumps, sometimes a van with a utility body that puts weight far behind the rear axle. That mix produces predictable wear. Rear arms take more load more often, so rear arm pads flatten first and rear pins wear oval before front ones. Trucks with long wheelbases mean arms are extended near their limits, which puts more bending stress on the arm and more torque on the carriage rollers. If you’re seeing uneven carriage wear on one side, look at how vehicles are being spotted in the bay before you assume a defect.

Duty cycle matters too. Fleet bays often run the same lift up and down twenty times a day during a PM push, then sit idle for a week. Hydraulic seals prefer steady use; long idle periods let fluid settle and let seals take a set, so the first few cycles after downtime are when weeping shows up. We tell fleet shops to run each lift through a full unloaded cycle weekly even in slow stretches. It’s five minutes and it heads off the seal complaints that people mistake for warranty defects. Understanding these patterns is also how you buy smart the next time: if your heaviest regular vehicle is 9,000 pounds fully loaded, a 10,000 lb lift is technically adequate and practically marginal, and stepping up to 12,000 or 15,000 lb capacity buys margin that shows up as longer component life rather than as a spec sheet number.
