A quick-lube franchise operator near Iowa City called us last winter with a problem that had nothing to do with oil changes. He wanted to convert his third bay into a combination service and seasonal storage bay, and he had a stack of printed spec sheets on automotive two post lifts that all looked roughly identical to him. Capacity numbers, overall widths, rise heights, arm configurations — he could read the numbers but he could not tell which ones actually mattered for a 26-foot-deep bay with a 12-foot ceiling and a floor poured in 1998. Why Model Numbers Matter More Than Capacity Ratings

Almost every buyer starts with capacity. Ten thousand pounds, twelve thousand, fourteen thousand — the number feels like the whole decision. It is not. On a Rotary SPO10, the number after the family designator tells you capacity, but the letters and suffixes tell you everything that determines whether the thing fits your building. An SPOA10 is asymmetric with swing arms; an SPO12 is a symmetric twelve-thousand-pound unit with a taller column and a different overhead crossbar height. Two units that both say “10,000 lb” on the label can differ by fourteen inches of required ceiling clearance. That is the difference between a clean install and a change order.

The Iowa City operator’s spec sheets included a Challenger CL10V3, a Rotary SPOA10, and a baseplate model from a budget brand. All three lift ten thousand pounds. Only two of them clear a 12-foot ceiling with the overhead assembly, and only one of them had arm geometry that would reach the pinch weld points on the lowered sports car he wanted to store over winter. When we compare automotive two post lifts for a customer, we start with the building and work backward into the model number, never the reverse. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric vs. Versymmetric Arms

This is where most spec sheet confusion lives. A symmetric lift places the columns directly across from each other and splits the vehicle roughly 50/50, which is great for trucks and vans but means the doors open into the columns on a passenger car. An asymmetric lift rotates the columns about 30 degrees and sets the vehicle back about 70/30, so the driver can open the door and get out. Versymmetric designs — Rotary’s term — give you both arm sets on one lift, with short front arms for cars and long rear arms that let you center a truck.

For a quick-lube conversion bay, we usually push asymmetric or versymmetric. The technician is in and out of that vehicle constantly, and the twenty seconds saved on every door swing adds up over a thousand cars. But for a seasonal storage application, arm geometry matters for a different reason: you are picking a car up once, leaving it on the arms for four or five months, and setting it down in spring. You want arm pads that seat squarely under the manufacturer’s lift points with the pad screwed to its full extension, not perched on a corner. When we compare automotive two post lifts for storage duty, we look hard at minimum pad height too — most low-profile arm sets get down to about three and three-quarter inches, and anything lower than that on a slammed car needs drive-up ramps or a rolling jack pad.

Overhead vs. Baseplate: Ceiling Height Is the Deciding Vote

An overhead lift runs the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose through a crossbar at the top of the columns. It gives you a clean floor with nothing to trip over or drag a floor jack across, and it is what most commercial shops choose. The trade-off is height: a typical overhead ten-thousand-pound unit needs somewhere around 145 to 150 inches of clear ceiling, and taller twelve- and fifteen-thousand-pound models want more. If your building has 12-foot walls or a low header over the door, the overhead crossbar becomes the constraint.

Baseplate lifts route everything through a low channel across the floor between the columns. They fit under lower ceilings and often cost a bit less, and we install plenty of them in pole buildings and older Iowa shops with sloped or trussed roofs. We had a customer in eastern North Dakota who needed a baseplate unit specifically because his maximum height was 139 inches and his heaviest vehicle was only around six thousand pounds — an easy call. The downside is that floor channel. Creepers catch on it, transmission jacks have to roll over it, and if you sweep with a push broom you will notice it every day. Between the two families of automotive two post lifts, our rule of thumb is simple: if you have the ceiling, go overhead; if you do not, a good baseplate lift is not a compromise on safety, just on floor convenience.

The Floor Under Your Automotive Two Post Lifts

Concrete kills more lift projects than budget does. A ten-thousand-pound two post lift typically requires a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and a lot of manufacturers spec four and a quarter or four and a half for higher capacities. That is minimum thickness of good, cured, reinforced slab — not four inches of concrete over four inches of loose fill and a crack running through the anchor zone. We get calls from people who tell us their concrete “is about five inches, maybe less,” and that “maybe less” is the part we have to resolve before anyone drills.

The good news is that a bad floor is fixable. We core-drill and check thickness, and if the slab does not make spec we cut out and pour a pair of footing pads under each column — usually four feet by four feet by twelve inches, tied into the existing slab. It adds a day and a material cost to the project, but it is dramatically cheaper than an anchor pulling out under load. Radiant heat in the floor adds another wrinkle: we have to locate the tubing before we drill, and sometimes that means shifting the column position a few inches or scanning the slab. If you are pouring new concrete for a shop and you know you want two post lifts eventually, tell your concrete contractor now. Six inches of reinforced slab in the lift bays costs very little at pour time and saves you real money later.

A Realistic Cost Breakdown From Lift Through Install

Here is the part the Iowa City operator actually wanted. We break lift projects into five buckets, and we quote all five up front so nobody gets surprised. First, the equipment itself: entry-level nine- and ten-thousand-pound units land in the low four figures, mid-grade commercial ten- and twelve-thousand-pound models from the brands we stand behind sit in the mid four figures, and fifteen- to eighteen-thousand-pound units move into the high four and low five figures. Second, freight — a two post lift weighs 1,500 to 2,500 pounds and ships on a truck that needs a dock or a forklift on your end.

Third, installation labor. A straightforward overhead install on good concrete with power already at the column location is typically a one-day job for a two-person crew. Fourth, electrical: most single-phase 220V power units need a dedicated 30-amp circuit, and if your panel is on the other side of the building, an electrician’s bill can rival the install labor. Fifth, the extras people forget — drive-up ramps, truck adapters, a rolling bridge jack if you plan to do brake and wheel bearing work, and a certified inspection if your insurance carrier wants documentation. Across the automotive two post lifts we quote in a typical month, the total installed number usually runs 25 to 40 percent above the sticker price of the lift itself. Budget that way from the start and the project stays boring, which is exactly what you want.

Spec’ing for Seasonal Storage Instead of Service

Storage duty changes a few priorities. A service lift cycles up and down thirty times a day and spends most of its life empty. A storage lift goes up in November and comes down in April with four thousand pounds sitting on the arms the whole time. Hydraulic systems handle that fine — a properly maintained cylinder with good seals holds load indefinitely, and the mechanical safety locks are what actually carry the weight once you lower the lift onto them. That last part matters: always lower onto the locks. Never leave a stored vehicle hanging on hydraulic pressure alone.

What we do change for storage applications is the inspection cadence and the accessory list. We tell storage customers to walk the lift once a month even when nothing moves — look at the equalizer cables for fraying at the sheaves, check that the lock ladders are engaged evenly on both columns, and glance at the cylinder for weeping. We also recommend arm restraint gear inspection before every long-term set, because if a car is going to shift, it happens in the first hour and the last hour.
