A mobile mechanic based near Dubuque called us last month with a spec sheet he’d pulled off three different dealer sites for automotive two post lifts, and none of the numbers lined up. That’s not unusual — the two-post market is packed with lifts that look identical on the outside and behave very differently underneath. The three lifts on the mobile mechanic’s shortlist
When our customer sent over his shortlist, he had a Rotary SPOA10, a Challenger CL10V3, and a BendPak XPR-10AS side by side in a spreadsheet. All three are asymmetric 10,000-lb capacity automotive two post lifts, all ALI-certified, all with three-stage arms. On paper they were interchangeable. In practice, three different design philosophies were staring at him from the same row of a table.
The Rotary SPOA10 is the workhorse choice — it’s what most independent service shops in Iowa run, it’s what dealer service departments spec into new construction, and the cylinders and cables are stocked at every Rotary dealer in the state. The Challenger CL10V3 hits nearly the same spec at a friendlier price and shares a lot of DNA with Rotary since both are made under the Vehicle Service Group umbrella. The BendPak XPR-10AS is the enthusiast favorite, with a distinctive powder-coat blue and a set of features like the padded overhead aimed at higher-end home shops. For a mobile mechanic building out a base-of-operations garage, any of the three would do the job — the question was which one matched his specific workflow.
What the model numbers actually tell you
Every manufacturer builds their model numbers around a set of codes, and once you know the language, spec-comparing automotive two post lifts gets easier. Rotary’s SPOA10 breaks down as SP (Symmetric/Asymmetric Post family), OA (Overhead Asymmetric), and 10 (10,000 lb). Change the OA to O (SPO series) and you get an overhead symmetric. Change the trailing number to 12 or 15 and you get bigger capacity. Challenger’s CL10 works the same way: CL (Column Lift), 10 (10K), and a suffix (V3, V4) for the current revision.
BendPak’s XPR line is a little different — the X is the model family, PR is “Post Rise,” and the numbers are capacity in thousands with letters describing arm style (A for asymmetric, S for symmetric, LP for low profile). Once you can read a model number, you can quickly narrow catalog listings to the exact geometry you need. Our customer wanted an overhead 10K asymmetric with low-pad reach for the occasional lowered sedan. That gave us SPOA10, CL10V3, and XPR-10AS as candidates and let us cross out the taller collar-style symmetric variants right away. It’s the fastest way to prune a category page from 40 lifts down to five that actually fit your bay.
Capacity ratings and duty cycles for automotive two post lifts
All three lifts on his list are rated 10,000 pounds, but the way that rating is distributed matters. Some manufacturers publish a per-arm rating (each arm rated to a fraction of the total) while others publish total capacity only. If you’re lifting a heavy-duty pickup, you want to know both — an unbalanced load can put more weight on one arm than the total spec would suggest.
Duty cycle is the other spec that matters for a working mobile mechanic. Home lifts might cycle two or three times a week; a mobile mechanic running out of a small garage between customer visits cycles up and down maybe 15 to 20 times a day. That’s closer to a light commercial shop. All three brands on his list rated their lifts for continuous service, but Rotary and Challenger have the longest track record in commercial service. The CL10V3 is nearly identical. The BendPak XPR-10AS is a hair slower on the way up but locks quieter, which some home shops care about.
Lock engagement is the other daily-maintenance factor. Two-post lifts have mechanical safety locks that engage at fixed heights, and how those locks feel — how confidently they clunk into place, how smoothly they release — is one of those things you don’t notice until you’re doing it for the tenth time in a morning. The Rotary and Challenger lifts use a strong, positive lock mechanism that’s virtually identical between the two brands. The BendPak lock is quieter but requires slightly more finesse to release, especially in cold weather when the release cable stiffens. For a mobile mechanic working out of an unheated Dubuque shop in January, that mattered enough to shift his choice toward the Challenger.
Column height, arm reach, and low-pad specs
Column height determines your ceiling requirement. The SPOA10 stands about 11 feet 6 inches; the CL10V3 is a touch shorter; the XPR-10AS overhead version pushes just past 11 feet. All three are workable in a standard 12-foot pole barn ceiling. If your ceiling is lower than 11 feet, you’re looking at a baseplate design instead of overhead — a different product category, and it changes the workflow because the crossbar is now at floor level rather than up top.
Arm reach matters if you plan to lift anything modern. Cars have gotten lower and wider since these lifts were originally designed, and the difference between a lift with a 4-inch minimum pad height and one with a 3.5-inch pad height is the difference between clearing a Camry rocker panel and scraping it. The Challenger CL10V3 came in slightly lower on pad height than the Rotary and clearly lower than the BendPak. The Dubuque install and what changed at the last minute
Install day started with a walk-through of the shop. His plan had the lift centered in a 30-foot wide bay, but when we laid out the anchor pattern we noticed a fresh crack running through the slab about six inches from where the passenger-side column needed to sit. That crack would have compromised the anchors on that column — cracks in concrete radiate outward when you set expansion anchors near them, and the last thing you want is a compromised anchor under a loaded lift.
We ended up shifting the whole lift eighteen inches to the north to put both columns squarely in solid concrete. That’s a common last-minute adjustment on Iowa installs, especially in older shops or pole barns where the slab was poured with cheap fiber mesh instead of proper rebar. How the lift is performing six months in
