On a stock sedan, symmetric arms work fine because the vehicle’s weight is centered and door clearance isn’t an issue. But once you’re dealing with a lifted overlanding truck with rock sliders, oversized tires, and a longer wheelbase, symmetric arms often put the lift columns too close to the doors, or force the driver to swing wide to get in and out. Asymmetric arms shift the front columns rearward and angle the arms so the front pickup points sit further back and out, giving more clearance for long doors and aftermarket bumpers.

For the customer in the Quad Cities, we walked through his actual truck dimensions before recommending anything. His rig had a long front bumper with a winch mount, so we steered him toward an asymmetric configuration on a 10,000 lb to 12,000 lb capacity two-post so the front pickup points would clear the bumper and skid plate without him having to creep the truck in at an angle every time. The columns sit directly across from each other, the arms swing in a mirror pattern, and there’s less guesswork about where the truck needs to stop. If most of what rolls through a bay is stock-height vehicles, symmetric is the practical choice.

The issue only comes up when someone’s daily driver is also their build project — lifted, long, and loaded with aftermarket parts hanging off the front and rear. That’s exactly the situation we ran into in the Quad Cities. Site Prep and Ceiling Height Before You Order
