Why Automotive Two Post Lifts Beat Four Post for Exhaust Work

A four post drive-on lift is great for alignments and storage, but the runways sit directly under the frame rails and rocker panels — exactly where exhaust systems and driveshafts live. Automotive two post lifts pick the vehicle up by the frame or designated pinch points, which clears the entire centerline of the car from front bumper to rear bumper. For a tech pulling a catalytic converter, dropping a full exhaust system, or swapping a driveshaft and U-joints, that open centerline is the whole job.

We’ve installed two post units in dealership bays where the previous four post setup meant techs were sliding creepers around runway rails just to get a light on the muffler hangers. Once we swap to an asymmetric two post lift, the arms rotate out of the way and the tech has a completely open shot at the underside. This matters even more on longer trucks and vans common in service departments — extended wheelbase pickups and cargo vans need that full unobstructed run for two-piece driveshafts and dual exhaust setups. It’s a small geometry difference on paper, but it changes how fast a tech can move through a rack-and-pinion job or a mid-pipe replacement.

Column Spacing and Drive-Through Clearance

Most 10,000 lb capacity two post lifts run somewhere around 11 to 12 feet of column spacing (outside column to outside column), with usable drive-through width in the 9 to 10 foot range once you account for the arm sweep. For a dealership bay handling half-ton and heavier trucks, we typically recommend sizing toward the wider end of that range and confirming overhead clearance too — many service departments have lower ceiling trusses than you’d expect, and a lift’s max rise height needs at least a foot of headroom above it.

Column placement also affects how a tech works around exhaust and driveline jobs. If the columns are set too tight to the vehicle’s actual wheelbase, techs end up working around the post itself when they’re trying to swing a driveshaft out or maneuver a transmission jack under the tail pipe. We measure the actual vehicles a shop runs most — not just a generic spec sheet — before we finalize where the anchors go. A bay built around delivery vans looks different than one built around sedans and crossovers, and getting that column spacing right the first time saves a re-anchor job down the road.

Arm Configuration for Exhaust and Driveline Access

Arm reach and rotation matter as much as capacity when the job is underneath the vehicle rather than at the wheels. Long triple-telescoping front arms give techs the reach needed on longer wheelbase trucks without the arm end intruding into the exhaust or driveline path. We generally point dealership service managers toward lifts with rear arms that can rotate fully out of the way, because a rear arm sitting mid-frame is exactly where a tech needs to slide a driveshaft or work a transmission crossmember.

Pad height and adapter selection also come into play. Trucks and SUVs with lower exhaust systems or aftermarket exhaust tips need enough adapter height to clear the pad without the tech having to fight clearance on lift-off. We stock adapters and extension screws for this exact reason — a half-inch difference in pad height can be what keeps a resonator from clipping the arm on the way up. None of this is complicated, but it’s the kind of detail that separates a lift bay that flows well from one where every job turns into a wrestling match.

Bay Spacing for Multi-Bay Dealership Layouts

When a dealership service manager is laying out three, four, or more bays of automotive two post lifts side by side, spacing between units matters just as much as the lift itself. We recommend leaving enough room between adjacent lifts for a tech to fully extend arms and open a door without clipping the neighboring column or a parked vehicle. In practice that’s usually a few feet of buffer beyond the column footprint on each side, plus room for a rolling tool cart or transmission jack to park between bays during driveline work.

We also look at how vehicles will queue into each bay. If your write-up process routes exhaust and driveline jobs to specific bays, it makes sense to put your longest-reach, highest-rise lifts in those positions and keep shorter-rise units for quicker in-and-out service work. Getting this right up front means less shuffling vehicles between bays mid-day, which adds up to real throughput over a month of dealership volume.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Power Requirements

Before any two post lift goes in, we check slab thickness and condition — anchor pull tests aren’t optional in a dealership setting where liability and insurance requirements are real. Most 10,000 to 12,000 lb two post lifts want a minimum of 4 inches of solid, unpatched concrete for the anchors, more for heavier duty units. If your bay has an old floor drain or a patched section right where a column needs to sit, that’s a conversation we have before delivery day, not after.

Power is the other piece people forget until installation morning. Most two post lifts run on a 220V circuit, not standard 120V 15A household power, and we get this question from shop owners often enough that we just build it into every quote conversation up front. If your bay was wired for older equipment, we’ll flag it during the site visit so electrical work isn’t a surprise the week the lift shows up on the truck.

Workflow: Positioning the Lift Relative to Parts and Tool Storage

Layout isn’t just about the lift footprint — it’s about what’s around it. For exhaust and driveline work specifically, techs need quick access to a transmission jack, driveshaft removal tools, and often a torch or cutting tool for stuck fasteners. We’ve seen dealership bays where the two post lift itself was perfectly sized but positioned so far from the tool room that every job lost minutes to walking. Positioning the lift so the open side (the side without a wall or adjacent bay) faces the tool and parts storage cuts that dead time out.

We also suggest keeping a clear path for rolling a floor jack or transmission jack under the vehicle once it’s raised — sounds obvious, but in tight dealership bays retrofitted from older four post layouts, we’ve had to reroute air lines and electrical drops that were originally run straight through where a two post lift’s ideal working path needed to be. A short walk-through with your install team before the concrete work starts catches this every time.

Matching Lift Capacity to Your Actual Vehicle Mix

A lot of eastern Nebraska dealership bays run mixed inventory — half-ton trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars all coming through the same bay. Undersizing capacity to save on upfront equipment cost is the most common mistake we see. A 9,000 lb rated lift might handle today’s fleet, but if your service drive picks up heavier trucks or fleet vehicles next year, that lift is now a bottleneck. We generally recommend sizing two post lifts one tier above your heaviest routine vehicle, which for most dealership mixes lands in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range with room to spare.

We size these the same way whether it’s a single-bay independent shop or a multi-bay dealership service department — look at the heaviest vehicle you service regularly, add a margin, and pick a model with arm reach and rise height that fits your ceiling and your actual workflow, not just a spec sheet. That’s the difference between a lift that works for the shop and one the shop has to work around.
