Most automotive two post lifts are engineered around a cable-and-pulley or a screw-drive system that keeps both carriages synchronized as the vehicle rises. On a standard brake job or tire rotation, the lift is up for maybe twenty minutes. Transmission service is a different animal entirely. The vehicle sits loaded, often with the transmission itself hanging on a jack below, for an hour or more at a time, sometimes with the lift raised to full height so a tech can work standing underneath. That extended static load, repeated dozens of times a week in a busy dealership bay, accelerates wear on the cable strands in a way lighter, quicker jobs simply don’t.

We’ve also seen technicians rock the vehicle or bounce the suspension while it’s elevated to free a stuck bolt or reposition a transmission jack, and that introduces shock loading the cable wasn’t necessarily designed to absorb on every cycle. Add in the fluid exposure — transmission fluid, gear oil, and cleaning solvents dripping onto the cable and its fittings over months — and you get corrosion and strand fatigue that’s easy to miss during a quick glance. A tech doing high-volume transmission work should treat cable inspection as part of the job, not an annual afterthought.

What a Real Cable Inspection Should Cover

When we inspect automotive two post lifts for dealership customers, we’re not just glancing at the visible cable run. We check the entire length for broken strands, flat spots, kinking, and rust bloom, paying close attention to where the cable wraps around pulleys or terminates at the swage fitting — that’s where fatigue concentrates fastest. We also check equalizer cable tension on both sides, because an out-of-adjustment cable puts more load on the shorter side and wears it out faster than its twin, even though both were installed the same day.

We look at the pulley sheaves themselves too. A grooved or worn pulley will chew through a brand new cable in a fraction of the time a smooth one will, so replacing the cable alone without checking the sheave is a half-measure. On older lifts we’ve serviced in busy service departments, we’ve found cables that were technically still holding but had enough visible wire breaks per foot that we pulled them from service on the spot. Typical Replacement Intervals for High-Cycle Bays

There’s no single number that fits every dealership, but we generally tell service managers running heavy transmission volume to have cables visually inspected every three to six months and plan on full cable replacement noticeably sooner than a shop doing mostly light repair work. A lift used constantly for engine and transmission R&R work, loaded to a high percentage of its rated capacity and held there for extended periods, is a candidate for replacement well ahead of a lift that mostly handles alignments and tire work. We’d rather quote a full cable set proactively than get a call after one has already started to unravel.

We also remind shops that cables should always be replaced in pairs or full sets rather than one at a time. Mixing a new cable with old, stretched ones on the same two post lift throws off the synchronization between carriages, and that mismatch shows up as one side lagging slightly during travel — which is itself a safety issue. When we quote cable replacement for a dealership, we ask for the lift’s model and capacity so we send exact-length, correct-diameter cable rather than something close enough.

Dimensions and Capacity Numbers That Matter

Cable size and length aren’t universal across automotive two post lifts, even within the same brand family. A 9,000 lb asymmetric lift and a 10,000 lb symmetric lift from the same manufacturer often run different cable diameters and routing lengths, and drive-through or extended-height columns change the cable run length again. We’ve swapped cables on lifts ranging from compact 9-foot-column home garage units up through full 30,000 lb heavy-duty columns used for larger service vehicles, and getting the wrong length or diameter cable on any of them either won’t fit the drum properly or will leave excess slack that throws off leveling.

Before ordering, we always confirm the serial number and pull the original spec sheet when one exists, because two lifts that look identical on the shop floor can have different cable part numbers depending on the production year. If your dealership doesn’t have the paperwork anymore, we can usually identify the correct cable from photos of the drum and pulley setup plus the lift’s rated capacity stamped on the column.

Signs Your Cables Need Attention Now, Not Later

A few warning signs shouldn’t wait for the next scheduled inspection. If one side of the vehicle noticeably leads the other while raising or lowering, that’s an equalization problem tied to cable stretch or tension imbalance. Visible rust streaks running down the column near the cable path, a grinding or popping sound during travel, or any strand that looks frayed or bird-caged should take the lift out of service immediately for transmission work until it’s checked. We’d rather a service manager call us with a description over the phone than wait and find out the hard way with a transmission hanging under the vehicle.

We also tell dealership techs to watch for slack in the cable when the lift is at rest and unloaded — a cable that visibly droops has already stretched past where it should be. None of these signs mean the lift is unsafe to ever use again, but they mean cable replacement should happen before the next heavy transmission job goes up on it, not after.

Scheduling Cable Service Without Shutting Down a Bay for Days

Dealerships running two post lifts in daily transmission service can’t always afford a bay sitting idle for a week. We coordinate replacement visits so cables, fittings, and any worn pulleys arrive together and the swap happens in a single scheduled visit, usually completed well within a working day per lift depending on access and how the columns are configured.
