The used automotive two post lifts myth we hear most often

The myth goes like this: buy a fifteen-year-old Rotary or a nameless import for a few thousand dollars, weld up whatever is cracked, and you have saved yourself eight grand. We understand the appeal — an EV specialty shop opening its doors in central Iowa is watching every dollar, and lift capacity is the biggest ticket on the tooling list. But we have watched the sequel play out too many times.

What starts as a $3,500 used lift becomes closer to $5,000 by the time you truck it home, patch the hoses, replace the lock ladders, source obsolete carriage bearings, and pay a rigger to stand the columns up. That is before you learn the equalizer cable is stretched past service limits and needs another chunk of parts you can only get through a Rotary or Challenger distributor. Why EV shops need to think differently about capacity

An EV specialty shop is not a legacy Toyota shop with an occasional Prius on the schedule. Modern battery packs push a Model X well past 5,400 pounds curb weight, a Rivian R1T past 7,100, and a Silverado EV comfortably into the 8,500-pound range. The old rule of thumb — “a 10,000-pound lift covers 95% of passenger cars” — was written before your shop’s core vehicle mix started weighing what a Ford E-350 used to weigh.

Third, if you have a friend or family relationship with a shop that is upgrading, and you get first look at their column before it hits Craigslist, that is often the best deal on used equipment anyone gets. Where used stops making sense is exactly where most people try to make it work: unknown-provenance lifts, unnamed import brands with no parts availability, and a commercial shop that will actually cycle the lift forty to eighty times a day. We have watched too many first-year EV shops try to save $6,000 on the wrong used lift, then spend $9,000 in downtime and rebuild parts across year two. The math is genuinely different for daily commercial work.

The hidden costs a bargain lift carries into your shop

The lift purchase price is the number that gets all the attention. It is also the smallest line item in the total cost. Freight from a private seller: budget $600 to $1,200 depending on distance and whether the columns come palletized. Rigging to unload without a dock or forklift: $400 to $800 for a couple hours of a wrecker or a local rigger. Concrete assessment: if your slab is unknown, a $250 core sample tells you whether you have four inches of 3,000 psi or a three-inch mystery pour.

Anchoring hardware: $150 to $300 for a full set of code-appropriate wedge anchors. Electrical: most two-posts need 208-240V single or three-phase within reach of the power unit, and running that circuit is $500 to $1,500 depending on your panel. Fluid and initial fill: $60 to $120 of ISO 32 or Dexron. First-year replacement parts on a used unit — cables, hoses, pads — realistically $500 to $1,500. Install labor if you cannot do it yourself: $1,000 to $2,000 for a two-tech day.
