Why the Model Number Beats the Brand Name
When a service manager in southeast Iowa says he wants a Rotary lift, we still ask for the model number. The gap between an SPO10 and an SPO12 is more than 2,000 pounds of capacity, roughly six inches of column height, and a different arm geometry. The gap between an SPOA10 and an SPO10 is the difference between asymmetric and symmetric — a choice that determines whether a technician can fully open a driver’s door at full lift. Automotive two post lifts get lumped together in conversation, but every model has a distinct footprint, ceiling requirement, and set of trade-offs.
When we quote a dealership doing wheel bearing work, we start with the vehicles they actually see. A store seeing a mix of half-tons and passenger cars needs 10,000 to 12,000 pounds capacity with symmetric arms and a low pad height for low-clearance sedans. A truck-heavy floor needs 15,000 pounds minimum and taller columns to clear a lifted cab. The model number tells us all of that in one line. Brand loyalty is fine — most of our customers stick with Rotary or Challenger for good reason — but the model number is where the real decision lives. Column Height and Overhead Clearance for Wheel Bearing Work
Wheel bearing service is one of the most punishing jobs on a lift because the vehicle is at maximum working height, an impact gun is banging on hub nuts, and a technician is often reaching overhead. Column height on most 10K and 12K automotive two post lifts runs between 145 and 175 inches. Symmetric overhead-style lifts add a crossbar between the top of the columns, which pushes the minimum ceiling requirement to about 12 feet in most bays. Baseplate models drop the ceiling requirement to roughly 11 feet but transfer the hydraulic and cable routing through a low crossbar at the floor.
For a southeast Iowa dealership converting an older brick bay with 11-foot ceilings, we usually spec a Rotary SPOA10 baseplate or a Challenger E10 baseplate. For a new build with 14-foot ceilings, we go overhead every time — the cable and hydraulic routing is cleaner, service is easier, and there is nothing on the floor to trip a tech carrying a pair of rotors. If wheel bearing service is a heavy percentage of the workload, we also push a taller-column option. Reaching a Ford Super Duty hub at full working height with a stubby column is a recipe for a strained back. The extra six inches of column travel earns its money in the first month.
Drive-Through Clearance and Arm Reach on Automotive Two Post Lifts
Drive-through clearance is the distance between the inside edges of the columns at floor level. Most 10K automotive two post lifts land between 100 and 108 inches — enough for a standard dually mirror-to-mirror but tight for a work van with utility bodies. If a dealership sees a lot of Transits and Sprinters, we push clearance to 110 inches or larger. On the arm side, front arm reach on a symmetric lift usually runs 30 to 40 inches at full extension, and rear arm reach runs 45 to 55 inches. The arm-reach numbers are what let the lift handle everything from a Miata to a full-size crew cab without the technician chasing pad locations for ten minutes.
We spend a lot of time helping shops read those arm-reach numbers correctly. The published spec is usually the maximum extension with the pad at its lowest setting. If your bay has to lift a raised half-ton with running boards, the effective arm reach shrinks because the pad has to be raised on a stack of extensions. That is fine — every serious lineup includes 3-inch, 6-inch, and 12-inch pad extensions — but it changes the geometry. When we spec automotive two post lifts for a dealership, we always confirm the tallest and lowest vehicle in the mix before we commit to a model.
Lifting Capacity, Duty Cycle, and Motor Sizing
Capacity is where new buyers overspend and old buyers underspend. A dealership rarely needs 15,000 pounds for a passenger-car floor, but a 10,000 lb lift is not a safe home for a diesel 2500. The rule of thumb we give service managers is simple: take the heaviest vehicle the floor will ever see, multiply by 1.15 for the fluid, tools, and safety margin, and buy the next rated capacity above that number. That usually puts a mixed dealership bay at 12,000 pounds and a truck-heavy floor at 15,000.
Motor sizing and duty cycle matter more than the sticker suggests. Most automotive two post lifts ship with a 220V single-phase 2 or 3 horsepower motor. A busy dealership doing forty tickets a day is not a home garage — the motor cycles hundreds of times a week. A 3 HP motor with a thermal overload built into the contactor runs cooler and lasts longer than a 2 HP motor turning fifty cycles a day. We keep spare motors and power units in stock for Rotary and Challenger because a dead motor on a busy floor is a five-figure day of lost revenue. Spec once for duty, not for the sales price on the invoice.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric for a Wheel Bearing Bay
Symmetric lifts place the front and rear arms at equal distances from the columns, which is ideal for full-size trucks and vans where the center of gravity sits behind the front doors. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns and shorten the front arms so the driver’s door can swing open past the column at full lift. For a dealership doing constant vehicle drop-off, wheel bearing service, and quick brake work, asymmetric is usually the right call — the technician can reach into the cabin, pop the hood release, and swing a door without banging into a column.
The compromise on an asymmetric lift is that heavy trucks want the center of gravity closer to the columns, which is exactly what symmetric geometry gives you. Some manufacturers, Rotary in particular, offer versa-symmetric arms that let the technician load either way depending on the vehicle. For most southeast Iowa dealerships we sell asymmetric on the light-duty bays and symmetric on the truck bays. If a shop only has room for one lift and sees a mix, a versa-symmetric 12,000 lb automotive two post lift is usually the safest single choice for a floor that does not know what the next vehicle in the door will weigh.
Southeast Iowa Install Logistics and Concrete Requirements
Every automotive two post lift we install requires a minimum concrete slab, and the number is not a suggestion. Most 10K and 12K models require 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and 15K models push to 5 inches at 4,000 PSI. In older Iowa buildings, we routinely find 3.5-inch slabs poured over questionable base. When that happens we have a few options: saw-cut and pour dedicated footings under each column, or move the lift to a spot with better concrete. Anchoring into thin slab is not something we do — the load path fails long before the anchors do.
Freight, unloading, and setup on automotive two post lifts is a full day of work with a forklift and two technicians. We coordinate directly with the freight carrier, spot the pallet in the bay, and stand the columns with a rigged forklift. A shop that has a forklift and a spare hand can knock hours off the labor. If we are driving down from Ames to a southeast Iowa town, we usually arrive first thing in the morning, set columns and cabling before lunch, and pressurize the hydraulic system in the afternoon. First lift and the shakedown cycles happen the same day, and the shop is billing on the lift the next morning.
