Read the Warranty Before You Read the Price

The first thing on the checklist is boring and nobody does it: read the actual warranty document, not the marketing bullet. A headline that says “5-year warranty” almost never means five years on everything. On most equipment in this class, the structure is tiered — the columns and welded structural steel might carry five or even ten years, the hydraulic cylinder two to five, the power unit one to two, and wear items like cables, slide blocks, arm pins, and hydraulic hoses get twelve months or nothing at all. That is not a scam. Structural steel does not wear out; cables do. But you need to know which tier the part that fails belongs to before you assume you are covered.

The fix was a couple hundred dollars in parts, not a catastrophe — but the surprise stung. Certification, Concrete, and the Two Things That Void Coverage Fastest

Two installation issues void more warranty claims than every mechanical defect combined: bad concrete and bad anchoring. Every manufacturer specifies a minimum slab — commonly four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb capacity unit, thicker for higher capacities, and the spec always includes a minimum cure age and a minimum distance from slab edges, expansion joints, and trenches. The second killer is anchor hardware. Use the anchors the manufacturer specifies, torque them to the printed value, and keep the receipt. Substituting a hardware-store wedge anchor because it was cheaper is an easy way to turn a covered structural claim into your problem. While you are at it, look for ALI/ETL certification on the label. Certified equipment has been third-party tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, and for hobbyists who occasionally lift a neighbor’s vehicle before annual state inspections, that certification matters — it is also what most insurance carriers and any future commercial buyer will look for. Uncertified imports can be perfectly serviceable, but the warranty behind them is often as thin as the documentation.

The Claim Workflow, Step by Step

When something does fail, the process goes faster if you know the sequence. Step one is documentation: photograph the failed component, the serial plate on the column, and the overall installation. The serial number drives everything — without it, nobody can confirm your manufacture date or your coverage window. Step two is a phone call to your selling dealer, not the factory. The dealer files the claim, and a dealer who wants your future business will push it harder than you can. Step three is the factory’s determination, which often includes a request for photos or a short questionnaire about duty cycle and maintenance history.

Step four is where hobbyists get tripped up: maintenance records. Most warranties on automotive two post lifts require documented periodic inspection — cable condition, arm restraint function, hydraulic fluid level, anchor torque. If you have never written any of that down, the factory can reasonably ask why they should cover a cable that was inspected zero times in four years. A spiral notebook on a shelf next to the power unit with dates and one-line entries is enough. Let us talk value honestly. For a hobbyist doing a dozen jobs a year, the components most likely to fail are not the expensive ones. Slide blocks wear. Arm restraint gears get sloppy. But that overhead assembly needs ceiling clearance, typically twelve feet or more depending on the model, and the cables up there are harder to inspect. Baseplate designs run everything through a cover plate at floor level, which is the answer for a pole building with twelve-foot sidewalls or a garage with a low door track. We get calls constantly from buyers who discovered the clearance problem after delivery.

The warranty wrinkle is this: baseplate cable and hose runs sit where vehicles drive over them, and damage from a dropped jack stand or a wheel rolling across an unsupported hose is not a defect. It is abuse, and it will be denied. Overhead cable failures, conversely, are usually genuine wear and get covered more readily — but they cost more in labor to reach. Neither configuration is better; they just fail differently. When you are choosing between configurations, factor in how you will actually inspect and maintain the cable runs, because that is the maintenance history the factory will ask about later. Before you buy, get these in writing. One: the tier table — years of coverage on structure, cylinder, power unit, and wear items, spelled out separately. Two: confirmation the seller is an authorized dealer for that brand. Three: whether labor is covered and by whom. Four: the concrete spec and anchor spec for your capacity, so you can measure your slab before delivery instead of after. Five: ALI/ETL certification status. Six: what wear parts the seller keeps in stock and typical lead time on the rest. Seven: the name and phone number of the technician who would actually come out.

If a seller cannot answer all seven quickly, that is information too.
