Automotive Two Post Lifts in Marion: Freight, Forklift, and Two Config Options Compared

An independent pro shop owner in Marion called us last spring asking about automotive two post lifts for a small building he’d bought off the frontage road. He wanted to run summer suspension jobs, winter tire swaps, and use one bay for seasonal vehicle storage the four months a year when work slowed down. The building had a 14 foot ceiling, a decent slab, and a rented forklift on Saturdays. The real questions were which two configurations to compare, how the freight truck was going to get in, and whether he could unload the columns himself on a Saturday morning. We laid it out on a napkin and shipped the lift the following Wednesday.

Configuration A: the 10,000 lb overhead symmetrical

The first configuration we put on the table for the Marion owner was a Rotary SPO10 clearfloor overhead 10,000 lb symmetrical. This is the workhorse configuration for an independent pro shop that mostly touches passenger cars, half-ton pickups, and the occasional three-quarter-ton. Column height sits at about 11 foot 8, the overhead cross-tube adds a few inches, and full rise puts a car about 71 inches off the ground. That’s enough clearance for a mechanic under 6-foot-2 to stand fully upright with an exhaust manifold at eye level.

What sells this configuration for seasonal storage is the arm sweep and the door clearance. Overhead automotive two post lifts in the 10K class let you park a stored car at mid-height for four months and still open both doors fully to run a battery tender in. Symmetrical arm geometry centers the vehicle, which matters when the same bay pulls double duty for suspension work in April and long-term storage in December. Motor is 220V single-phase, roughly 26 amps under load, and the equalizer cables are the standard 3/8 inch 7×19 aircraft cable we stock as a same-day replacement part.

Configuration B: the 12,000 lb overhead asymmetric

The second option on the napkin was a Challenger CL12 overhead 12,000 lb asymmetric. Same overhead cross-tube geometry, but 20 percent more capacity, taller columns, and arms rotated to shift the vehicle rearward. That last part is the whole story. Asymmetric arm layout on automotive two post lifts was designed specifically to open a full-size sedan or crew-cab pickup door at working height without hitting the column. If the shop’s customer mix drifts toward diesel pickups and Suburbans, this is the configuration to spec.

The tradeoff is walk-around. Because the vehicle sits rearward of center, the tech has more room in front of the truck and less behind it. In a bay where you’re running full suspension jobs, that’s fine because the wheels and control arms are the workspace anyway. For our Marion owner, we ended up recommending Configuration A because his winter storage plan was passenger cars, but a shop that’s 80 percent diesel pickups would go the other direction. Capacity difference between 10K and 12K also lets him grow into 3/4 ton and 1-ton work without a lift swap.

Freight logistics for east-central Iowa

Every one of the automotive two post lifts we ship out of our Ames warehouse rides an LTL freight truck to the destination. For Marion, that’s a two-day transit through a Cedar Rapids terminal, and the truck arrives on a standard 53-foot dry van. If your shop has a loading dock, we drop the pallet at the dock. If you don’t, we send a truck with a lift gate, and the driver sets the pallet on the ground behind the trailer. Two columns and an accessory box weigh about 1,900 lb total, palletized in two units.

The freight-cost delta between dock delivery and lift-gate delivery is typically $150 to $250. If you have any way to arrange dock access, even at a neighboring business for an afternoon, take it. Lift-gate service is fine but the driver won’t help you move the pallet more than three feet off the tailgate. The columns arrive standing upright on the pallet, banded, with the base plates and arms in a separate crate. Never let a driver put the pallet down on gravel. Concrete or asphalt only, or you’ll spend an hour prying it off wet ground.

Our Marion owner had a friend with a rental forklift on Saturday. That is the ideal unload path, and here’s how we walk it through with owners running automotive two post lifts in without a full loading dock. Fork tines at 42 inches spread, entering the pallet from the short end, low approach, tilt back one degree once the pallet is off the ground. The pallet clears the trailer floor by about two inches. Move at walking speed to the install bay, set the pallet on the concrete inside the door, cut the bands, and stand the columns upright manually with two people per column.

If you don’t have a forklift, a set of pipe rollers and a come-along works, but it’s a two-hour job for two people instead of a 15-minute unload. We rent forklift time to a lot of shops when we install, and if we’re doing the install we bring our own. For a customer doing the install themselves after we ship, we sketch out the forklift path and freight timing on a call before the pallet leaves Ames. Our full install crew serves eastern Iowa on any day you can lock the shop for eight hours.

Seasonal storage: using a two-post four months a year

Using automotive two post lifts for winter vehicle storage is one of the most under-appreciated business moves an independent shop can make. A stored car at mid-height rents at $75 to $150 a month depending on market, doesn’t need heat, and takes up the same square footage that would otherwise sit idle from Thanksgiving through spring thaw. The Marion owner planned to store four cars a winter across two bays, which paid the entire monthly lease payment on the building.

Two mechanical notes on storage. First, drop the lift onto the mechanical safety locks before you leave the shop for the weekend. Hydraulic seals will hold pressure for a night, not for three months. Locking onto the mechanical latches transfers load off the cylinder entirely. Second, engage a battery tender on each stored car and check tire pressure monthly. A stored car with a dead battery and flat tires is a warranty conversation you don’t want. We include a storage-mode checklist with every install for shops that plan to run this program.

Choosing between the two configurations

For a Marion pro shop mixing daily maintenance and seasonal storage, we scored the two configurations on five factors: capacity headroom, arm geometry for door clearance, ceiling clearance at full rise, storage-lock behavior, and long-term parts availability. Configuration A (Rotary SPO10 overhead symmetrical 10K) won on ceiling clearance and storage-lock geometry. Configuration B (Challenger CL12 asymmetric 12K) won on capacity headroom and pickup door clearance. Both are ALI Gold certified, both use standard parts we stock same-day.

The tiebreaker was the customer mix. Because the Marion shop’s winter storage cars are passenger vehicles and his summer work is 60 percent cars, 40 percent light pickups, the 10K symmetrical was the right call. If his mix shifts, he can trade up to a 12K in year four or five and we’ll help him move the lift.
