A crew chief for a dirt-track race team out of southeast Iowa called last winter looking at automotive two post lifts for the team shop. Budget was flexible but constrained. He wanted to swap coilovers and rebuild shocks off-season, run corner-weight changes weekend to weekend, and keep the primary car up on the lift Thursday through Saturday during a race week. He asked us to walk him through a decision tree from budget floor to full configuration, with financing that matched his winter cash flow. Here’s the tree we sketched, and here’s the payment schedule that made the deal work for a race team that’s cash-rich in fall and thin in April.

Step one: what does the car actually weigh?

The decision tree for automotive two post lifts starts at vehicle weight. A modified stock car, a sportsman late model, and a Super Late run 2,400 to 2,700 lb. A pavement Modified sits around 2,300 lb. Even with a two-car team and a tow rig, the heaviest thing on the lift for suspension work is going to be under 3,500 lb. That means a 9,000 lb two-post is genuinely enough. But we push race teams to 10K because the price delta is small and the arm-length options open up on the 10K frames.

What we don’t recommend is undersizing. The temptation on a tight budget is a 6K or 7K asymmetric, and those exist and they’ll technically lift a race car. But the arm-restraint gears and the cable-and-sheave systems on the smaller frames are lighter duty, and a race shop cycles a lift ten times a night during setup week. The 10K frame is built for that duty cycle. It’s the entry point of the tree, and it sets everything downstream.

Step two: overhead or baseplate for shock work

The second decision on the tree is arm and beam configuration. For suspension and shock replacement on a race car, we recommend overhead automotive two post lifts almost every time. The reason is arm swing. A race car with the shocks pulled has the wheels off, and you want a completely unobstructed floor to roll a floor jack, a shock dyno, or a corner-weight scale through the bay. A baseplate lift puts a cable-carrying floor bar between the columns, and every time you roll a scale over it you’re either lifting it or working around it.

The exception is a shop with a low ceiling, and we’ve built plenty of Quonset-style team shops in southeast Iowa where the truss sits at 11 foot 4. In that case we spec a baseplate model with a low-profile cable cover, and we drop a rubber mat over the cover to make jack transitions easier. But if the ceiling is 12 foot or more, overhead wins for suspension work. It also opens up options for a mid-height safety lock, which matters when you’re spending 40 minutes under the car doing a corner rebuild.

Step three: symmetrical for corner-weight and shock work

Once the frame and beam are picked, arm geometry is next. Race teams working on suspension want symmetrical arms, not asymmetric. Symmetrical automotive two post lifts center the car between the columns, which matters when you’re rolling a corner-weight scale under each tire and comparing readings. Asymmetric setups rotate the car 30 degrees rearward, which is fine for a service shop but skews the geometry of a symmetric operation like scaling a race car.

Arm length matters too. On a race car with a short wheelbase, the standard 3-stage front arm is too long at full extension. We spec triple-telescoping arms front and rear so the crew can collapse them to reach the frame rails on a 100-inch wheelbase stock car. Adapter pads should be the tall stackable style, six or seven inches worth of stacked rubber, because a low-slung race car needs pad height to clear the rocker panels. Step four: financing the lift on a race-shop cash cycle

Race-team cash flow is bimodal. Big money comes in during fall banquet season and early-winter sponsorship renewals. Cash goes out in March and April when the team is buying tires, fuel, and engines for the year. Any financing on automotive two post lifts for a race team needs to match that cycle. Our standard offer is 0% APR for 12 months with 90-day deferred first payment, through First Business. That means you take delivery in December, don’t make the first payment until March, and pay the lift off over the next 12 months as sponsorship checks land.

The mechanics are straightforward. Standard credit application, hard-pull on the shop’s business credit, decision in 48 hours for most amounts under $15,000. For a 10K overhead symmetrical with triple-telescoping arms and a full accessory kit, you’re financing about $5,500 to $7,000 depending on brand. Monthly payment is roughly $500 to $600 for the 12-month plan. Extended terms of 24 or 36 months are available at 6 to 9 percent, useful if the team is also buying a tire changer and balancer in the same order.

Step five: rolling jacks or not

A common accessory decision for race teams is whether to add a rolling jack to the two-post. Short answer: rolling jacks live on 4-post lifts, not automotive two post lifts. A two-post already has the wheels dangling free, so there’s nothing a rolling jack adds. What race teams should add instead is a full accessory set of stack adapters, drop-in truck adapters for the tow rig, and a set of wheel dollies for stripping a corner down to bare hub.

We also push race teams to add a hydraulic hose spare kit. A pinhole in a hydraulic hose during setup week on a Thursday night, three hours from a race Saturday, is a race-canceling event. A spare hose kit costs the equivalent of one race entry fee, and we ship it with the lift. Same logic on cables. A spare set of equalizer cables and a spare set of sheave bearings live on the shelf, and the crew can swap them in an hour instead of chasing a next-day parts delivery.

Step six: install timing around race season

For a southeast Iowa race team, install timing is a real question. We won’t install the day before a race, and we won’t install during setup week. The best window is late November through early February, off-season, when the shop is quiet and the crew has time to walk through operator training without a car on the schedule. We coordinate freight to arrive the week of install, uncrate on day one, install and commission on day two, operator training on day three.

Slab check happens on our first site visit. Most race-team shops in southeast Iowa are 5-inch fiber-mesh slabs, which handles a 10K two-post fine with proper wedge anchors. If the slab is over an old feedlot pit or a filled expansion joint, we cut, pour a pad, and cure for 14 days before install.
